Early Thrombocytopenia at Hospital Admission Predicts Mortality in Patients with Non-Isolated Severe Traumatic Brain Injury.

Unlabelled: Patients with severe traumatic brain injury (STBI) often experience an abnormal hemostasis that contributes to mortality and unfavorable neurological outcomes.

Objectives: We aimed to analyze epidemiologic, clinical, and laboratory factors associated with mortality in patients with STBI during the first 48 h after in-hospital admission.

Methods: We performed an observational retrospective study of STBI patients with associated extracranial trauma [defined as Injury Severity Score (ISS) ≥ 16 with an Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) head and neck ≥ 3 and Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) ≤ 8] admitted to a Level II trauma center over seven years (2015-2021).

Dynamics of thrombin generation: Filling the gap between the system pharmacology theory and clinical practice in clinical pharmacology and therapeutics.

Mathematical models of thrombin generation (TG) that have been developed are based on a systems biology approach. Although this approach provides important information about the coagulation system, its clinical applicability is limited by its complexity and number of input variables required. The aim of this study was to develop a semimechanistic model able to describe TG in trauma and control patients.

Background: This study aimed to determine whether educational attainment-a common proxy of cognitive reserve (CR)-influences the association between motor and cognitive/behavioural outcomes in a large cohort of ALS patients without dementia.

Methods: N = 726 ALS patients without FTD were assessed for motor (ALSFRS-R), cognitive (Edinburgh Cognitive and Behavioural ALS Screen, ECAS) and behavioural outcomes (ECAS-Carer Interview, ECAS-CI). CR was operationalized via educational attainment (in years).

Achievement of Clinical Remission in Life-Threatening Rosai-Dorfman Disease With Cladribine.

Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare proliferative histiocytic disorder characterized by sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy, rarely presenting with severe and life-threatening extra-nodal features. The rarity of RDD, clinically variant phenotype, limited data, and lack of a current standardized management approach make treatment decisions difficult. Herein, we present a case of life-threatening, disseminated RDD with rare clinical features of recurrent pericardial effusion, bilateral pleural effusions, and abdominal tissue fibrosis successfully treated with six cycles of cladribine, achieving clinical remission.

ACCURACY OF NEAR-INFRARED IMAGING IN DETECTION OF PROXIMAL CARIES LESIONS IN DECIDUOUS MOLARS: AN IN VITRO STUDY.

Introduction: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the accuracy of near-infrared imaging (NIRI) generated by the iTero Element 5D scanner for detecting proximal caries lesions in deciduous molars, compared with visual inspection (VI), bitewing radiography (BW) and histological examination (HT) (reference standard).

Methods: Sound deciduous molars and those with caries lesions (ICDAS 0 to 5) on the proximal surface were included, while teeth with marginal crest breakdown, restoration on the mentioned surfaces, or extensive dentin resorption were excluded. A total of 182 deciduous molars, divided into 91 pairs of first and second molars, were evaluated by two blinded examiners.

Sex-related differences in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: A 2-[F]FDG-PET study.

Purpose: We investigated sex-related brain metabolic differences in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and healthy controls (HC).

Methods: We collected two equal-sized groups of male (m-ALS) and female ALS (f-ALS) patients (n = 130 each), who underwent 2-[F]FDG-PET at diagnosis, matched for site of onset, cognitive status and King's stage. We included 168 age-matched healthy controls, half female (f-HC) and half male (m-HC).

Many studies have explored living in rural areas as a possible risk factor for ALS, without focusing simultaneously on incidence, age at onset and phenotypic features.

Methods: We analyzed a sample of 543 participants with FEP, 203 siblings, and 1168 controls from the EU-GEI study using a correlational design.

Enhancing bevacizumab efficacy in a colorectal tumor mice model using dextran-coated albumin nanoparticles.

Bevacizumab is a monoclonal antibody (mAb) that prevents the growth of new blood vessels and is currently employed in the treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC). However, like other mAb, bevacizumab shows a limited penetration in the tumors, hampering their effectiveness and inducing adverse reactions. The aim of this work was to design and evaluate albumin-based nanoparticles, coated with dextran, as carriers for bevacizumab in order to promote its accumulation in the tumor and, thus, improve its antiangiogenic activity.

Study on the Consumption of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs and Antibiotics by the Brazilian Adult Population: A Cohort Study.

Self-medication without a medical or dental prescription is an action that leads to a significant problems associated with the overuse of medication in Brazil. The inappropriate use of antibiotics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) leads to problems related to microbial agent resistance and gastrointestinal complications. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the patterns of antibiotic and NSAIDs consumption among the adult population of Brazil.

Side-Effects on the Renal function of Cytoreductive Surgery with Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a frequent complication in patients undergo-ing cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) due to a combination of several factors: increased intra-abdominal pressure, heat stress and drug tox-icity. Patients admitted to Intensive Care Unit after CRS and HIPEC during 129 months. Data recorded were: demographic characteristics; severity of illness, haematology and basic chemistry panels (renal function and electrolytes), type of cancer and extension, HIPEC drug and temperature, fluid balance, ICU and hospital stay and mortality.
