Bones and teeth represent a common finding in ancient DNA studies and in forensic casework, even after a long burial. Genetic typing is the gold standard for the personal identification of skeletal remains, but there are two main factors involved in the successful DNA typing of such samples: (1) the set-up of an efficient DNA extraction method; (2) the identification of the most suitable skeletal element for the downstream genetic analyses. In this paper, a protocol based on the processing of 0.

The interpretation of tanatochronological data is a fundamental aspect of the medico legal diagnosis, because it allows to trace back the interval of death. Traditionally, the evaluation of the hypostasis plays a relevant role in the interpretation of such information, despite its well-known limits and fallacies. In order to evaluate the degree of hypostatic area discoloration, the methodology currently used is highly subjective and influenced by several variables.

Article Synopsis
  • Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by protein aggregates, inflammation, and issues with blood vessels, including a damaged blood-brain barrier that allows harmful proteins like fibrinogen to enter the brain.
  • Fibrinogen interacts negatively with amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptides, worsening blood flow and clotting issues associated with AD.
  • Lecanemab, an FDA-approved treatment for AD, helps remove Aβ plaques and prevents negative interactions between Aβ and fibrinogen, potentially slowing disease progression.

Article Synopsis
  • Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by protein-rich brain inclusions, neuroinflammation, and problems with blood vessels, which includes a weakened blood-brain barrier that allows blood proteins like fibrinogen to enter the brain.
  • Fibrinogen interacts negatively with the amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptide, worsening blood clotting issues and blood flow in AD.
  • Lecanemab, an FDA-approved antibody for AD, shows potential to reduce Aβ levels and slow cognitive decline by blocking the harmful interaction between Aβ and fibrinogen, preventing further damage in the brain.

The study of bite marks provides crucial elements that contribute towards identifying the biter. In many cases, it assumes importance when bite marks are detected on the body of a victim of violence, but it could also be relevant when the bite marks are seen on food substances at the crime scene. In both circumstances, comparing the bite marks with a suspect's dentition can be decisive in confirming or excluding the culpability.

Article Synopsis
  • The amyloid-beta peptide (Aβ) plays a significant role in Alzheimer's disease (AD), with its protofibrils being identified as the most toxic form.
  • A recently FDA-approved antibody called lecanemab targets these protofibrils, showing effectiveness in slowing AD progression.
  • The study suggests that Aβ protofibrils activate the plasma contact system, leading to inflammation and vascular issues in AD, with lecanemab blocking this detrimental activation.

Introduction: In fatal accidents during scuba diving, it is necessary to differentiate a death from primary drowning from a secondary drowning death that is primarily due to other etiopathogenetic factors. The inhalation of water can only be the end point of a series of events capable of causing the diver's exitus. This study aims to demonstrate that even low-risk heart disease in daily life become potentially fatal during scuba diving.

A dysregulated plasma contact system is involved in various pathological conditions, such as hereditary angioedema, Alzheimer disease, and sepsis. We previously showed that the 3E8 anti-high molecular weight kininogen (anti-HK) antibody blocks HK cleavage and bradykinin generation in human plasma ex vivo. Here, we show that 3E8 prevented not only HK cleavage but also factor XI (FXI) and prekallikrein (PK) activation by blocking their binding to HK in mouse plasma in vivo.

The correct definition of time of death often represents a key to solving judicial cases. One of the methods for determination of the time interval since death is at present the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of hypostases. However, the simple observation of the degree and fixation of hypostases is based on nonobjective parameters, and is therefore characterized by an intrinsic variability that can compromise their reliability.

In January 2020, SARS-COV-2 infection spread worldwide and was declared "pandemic" by WHO. Because of the high contagiousness of the virus and devastating effects of the epidemic on public health, numerous efforts have been made to develop suitable vaccines to prevent the infection. Among the side effects developed by patients who undergone vaccination, there are common symptoms but also more serious reactions such as the thrombosis syndromes.

The cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus causes significant economic losses to cattle production systems and is a main barrier to the introduction of Bos taurus breeds and their crosses in Brazil. These breeds have the genetic potential to generate animals that are more productive, but they are also more susceptible to R. microplus.

Cochlear implants (CIs) are used for compensating the so-called deep sensorineural deafness. CIs are usually powered by rechargeable or long-lasting batteries. In this paper, the feasibility of a fully implanted stand-alone device able to provide the electric power required for stimulating the auditory nerve, without external recharging, is investigated.

Driven by increasing consumer demand, not-for-profit health agencies are responding by providing accurate, current information about the disorders they deal with. A case history of the information service at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the role of the health sciences librarian in the development of such information centers is described. The librarian, as information provider in the health agency setting, obtains professional advisory support, thus assuring delivery of the most responsible information to the constituency represented by the organization.
