Following this severe contamination event, radiocaesium (Cs) is anticipated to circulate within these forest ecosystems for several decades. Since the accident, a number of models have been constructed to evaluate the past and future dynamics of Cs in these forests.

Accurate defect characterization is desirable in the ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation as it can provide quantitative information about the defect type and geometry. For defect characterization using ultrasonic arrays, high-resolution images can provide the size and type information if a defect is relatively large. However, the performance of image-based characterization becomes poor for small defects that are comparable to the wavelength.

Methods: This was an ecological study; HFCP adherence indicators for 2,837 municipalities were calculated, as were NCD hospitalization indicators, according to funding categories and the Firjan Socioeconomic Development Index.
Results: The HFCP adherence indicator was higher for municipalities that received Congress funding (1.
Since Fukushima accident, dozens of field studies have been conducted in order to quantify and understand the behaviour of atmospheric radiocesium (Cs) fallouts in contaminated forests of Fukushima and neighbouring prefectures. In this paper, we carry out a detailed review of data acquired over 2011-2017 in Japanese cedar and cypress plantations, focusing on aerial tree organs, soil layers and tree-to-soil depuration fluxes. To enable comparison and reinforce the consistency between sites, radiological measurements were normalized by the deposit and interpolated onto the same spatio-temporal frame.

The via-hole oxidation is shown to lead to straight waveguides with smooth oxide/semiconductor interfaces and whose propagation losses are similar to one obtained using the standard process but with the advantage of maintaining a quasi-planar wafer surface. It thereby paves the way towards a simplification of the fabrication of III-V-semiconductor-oxide photonic devices.

Modelling the radionuclide cycle in forests is important in case of contamination due to acute or chronic releases to the atmosphere and from underground waste repositories. This article describes the most important aspects to consider in forest model development. It intends to give an overview of the modelling approaches available and to provide guidance on how to address the quantification of radionuclide transport in forests.

The fate and dispersion of radiocesium in forests affected by the Fukushima atmospheric fallouts have been efficiently characterized by Japanese scientists thanks to monitoring surveys of radioactive contents in contaminated soil, water, and vegetation samples at numerous sites. In this paper, we carry out a meta-analysis of the field surveys conducted over the period 2011-2013 in evergreen coniferous and deciduous broadleaf forests of Fukushima or neighboring prefectures. The review focuses on contamination data acquired in tree vegetation - about 1500 spatio-temporal measurements of concentrations, inventories and depuration fluxes - with a particular interest for organs that were directly exposed to the atmospheric fallouts and subjected to depuration mechanisms (foliage, branches and outer bark).

This technique relies on the effective combination of multifocus microscopy and astigmatic 3D single-molecule localization microscopy. Evaluating such integrals is a challenge addressed in this paper. A fast and efficient numerical scheme based on the regularized composite Simpson's rule is proposed, and its efficacy is demonstrated by revisiting the scattering of an elastic plane wave by a stress-free half-plane crack embedded in an isotropic and homogeneous solid.

The surveys that were conducted through mainly carborne, airborne and in situ gamma-ray measurement devices, enabled to efficiently characterize the spatial distribution and temporal evolution of air dose rates induced by Caesium-134 and Caesium-137 in the terrestrial systems. These measurements revealed that radiation levels decreased at rates greater than expected from physical decay in 2011-2012 (up to a factor of 2), and dependent on the type of environment (i.

In the course of international programs, the French Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN) developed a forest model, named TREE4 (Transfer of Radionuclides and External Exposure in FORest systems), 15 years ago. Recently published papers on a Japanese evergreen coniferous forest contaminated by Fukushima radiocesium fallout provide interesting and quantitative data on radioactive mass fluxes measured within the forest in the months following the accident.

The purpose of this work is to validate, by comparing numerical and experimental results, the ability of the Westervelt equation to predict the behavior of ultrasound beams generated by phased-array transducers. To this end, the full Westervelt equation is solved numerically and the results obtained are compared with experimental measurements. The numerical implementation of the Westervelt equation is performed using the explicit finite-difference time-domain method on a three-dimensional Cartesian grid.

Compared to agricultural lands, forests are complex ecosystems as they can involve diverse plant species associations, several vegetative strata (overstorey, shrubs, herbaceous and other annual plant layer) and multi-layered soil profiles (forest floor, hemi-organic and mineral layers). A high degree of variability is thus generally observed in radionuclide transfers and redistribution patterns in contaminated forests. In the long term, the soil compartment represents the major reservoir of radionuclides which can give rise to long-term plant and hence food contamination.

Indeed, phased array present a great adaptability to the inspection configuration and the application of suitable delay laws allows to optimize the detection and characterization performances by taking into account the component geometry, the material characteristics, and the aim of the inspection. In addition, the amount of potential information issued from the inspection is in general greatly enhanced.

The primary objective of the IAEA's BIOMASS Forest Working Group (FWG) was to bring together experimental radioecologists and modellers to facilitate the exchange of information which could be used to improve our ability to understand and forecast radionuclide transfers within forests. This paper describes a blind model validation exercise which was conducted by the FWG to test nine models which members of the group had developed in response to the need to predict the fate of radiocaesium in forests in Europe after the Chernobyl accident. The outcomes and conclusions of this exercise are summarised.
