Despite its safety record, mifepristone is subject to a highly restrictive set of regulatory measures through the Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) by the US Food and Drug Administration. We argue that these restrictions both reflect and perpetuate a cycle of abortion stigma, creating particular barriers to mifepristone use in primary care settings where communities that historically experience barriers to care can most easily access reproductive health services. Through qualitative interviews with Illinois primary care clinicians, we discovered how the REMS heightens institutional anxiety over implementation of mifepristone use.

This study sought to investigate the sustained effects of a peer-led HIV prevention intervention on African American freshmen college students attending a historically Black university. Students participated in a HIV prevention intervention where data were collected at three points in time. Analysis of the data revealed that students had significant changes in HIV risk behaviors and HIV Prevention self-efficacy over time.

Objective: Poor fetal growth is associated with increased rates of adverse health outcomes in children and adults. The social determinants of poor fetal growth are not well understood. Using multiple socioeconomic indicators measured at the individual level, this study examined changes in maternal socioeconomic position (SEP) from childhood to adulthood (socioeconomic mobility) in relation to poor fetal growth in offspring.

This study explores the impact of a peer-led HIV intervention, based on the health belief model and social cognitive theory of behavior change, on a sample of African American college students. Certified peer educators were trained by the researcher to implement the four-module HIV prevention intervention. Pre-/postassessments revealed that after the intervention, students were less embarrassed to put a condom on themselves or on their partner, were more likely to use a condom, and ask their sex partner if they had ever been tested for HIV.

Objectives: From 2001 through 2005, African Americans accounted for the largest percentage of new cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/ acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in all age categories, especially among people aged 13 to 24 years. Although students attending historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) report many of the behaviors that promote HIV transmission, their risk behaviors and HIV testing practices have not been well-characterized. We compared the demographic and behavioral characteristics of people who have been previously tested for HIV with those of people tested for the first time in this demonstration project to increase HIV testing at HBCUs.

Objectives: To examine the probability of inadequacy of schoolchild nutrient intakes; to compare the predicted adequacy of schoolchild diets to previously published data for toddler diets and to examine the relative adequacy of the diets of sibling pairs.

Design: Food consumption data were measured 2 days per month across approximately one year. Mean nutrient intakes were calculated and compared to international standards using a probability approach.

Vitamin intakes of 255 toddlers (aged 18-30 mo) were estimated from food consumption recorded during 1 y at sites in Egypt, Kenya, and Mexico. Mean intakes were compared with requirements standards by using a probability approach to estimate the prevalence of inadequate intakes. There were predicted inadequacies for vitamin A (32%) and riboflavin (20%) in Egypt, vitamins A (68%) and C (63%) and riboflavin (52%) in Mexico, and vitamin B-12 (44%) in Kenya.
