Civic identity: media, belonging, & Latiné youth in the 2020 US presidential election.

We explore how Latiné immigrant-origin youth used and made sense of media to enact their civic identities during the 2020 US presidential election cycle. In a polarized national context, this project highlights the voices and experiences of the participants (n=39). We conducted and analysed semi-structured interviews to identify three comprehensive themes.

Patients with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (ccTGA) can be treated with a double switch operation (DSO) to restore the normal anatomical connection of the left ventricle (LV) to the systemic circulation and the right ventricle (RV) to the pulmonary circulation. The subpulmonary LV progressively deconditions over time due to its connection to the low pressure pulmonary circulation and needs to be retrained using a surgical pulmonary artery band (PAB) for 6-12 months prior to the DSO. The subsequent clinical follow-up, consisting of invasive cardiac pressure and non-invasive imaging data, evaluates LV preparedness for the DSO.

Response of health-related quality of life following pediatric/congenital cardiac catheterization procedures.

Background: Health related quality of life (HRQOL) is a patient-reported metric (PRM) that provides a holistic measure of health that is not addressed in traditional outcome measures. The acute responsiveness of HRQOL after pediatric/congenital cardiac catheterization procedures has not, to our knowledge, been studied.

Methods: A single-center prospective cohort study was performed, longitudinally evaluating HRQOL and other PRM in school-age children and adolescents (ages 8-18) undergoing diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization procedures prior to their scheduled procedure, and then 1 day, ∼1 month, and ∼3 months after the procedure.

Chlorination of epithelial tight junction proteins by neutrophil myeloperoxidase promotes barrier dysfunction and mucosal inflammation.

Neutrophils (polymorphonuclear leukocytes, PMNs) comprise a major component of the immune cell infiltrate during acute mucosal inflammation and have an important role in molding the inflammatory tissue environment. While PMNs are essential to clearance of invading microbes, the major PMN antimicrobial enzyme myeloperoxidase (MPO) can also promote bystander tissue damage. We hypothesized that blocking MPO would attenuate acute colitis and prevent the development of chronic colitis by limiting bystander tissue damage.

Pulmonary Artery Wedge Pressure Can Underestimate Direct Pulmonary Vein Pressure in Pediatric Pulmonary Vein Stenosis.

Background: Pulmonary artery wedge pressure (PAWP) can underestimate directly measured pulmonary vein pressure (PVP) as demonstrated in animal studies and human case reports. This concept has not been validated in a larger cohort of pediatric patients with pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS).

Methods: Pediatric patients who underwent cardiac catheterization for PVS at a single center from January 1, 2018, to March 31, 2023, were retrospectively reviewed.

Background: Contraceptive implants are popular in Africa, but barriers to removal exist. Biodegradable implants (BDIs) offer an alternative to the need for removal. This study explored potential user, provider, and other stakeholder perspectives on 2 BDI prototypes, revealing opportunities and challenges for introduction.

Critical left main coronary artery stenosis presenting as cardiac arrest in coarctation of the aorta patient.

Congenital coronary artery stenosis coexisting with aortic coarctation in nonsyndromic patients has not previously been reported. This report describes a nonsyndromic aortic coarctation patient who experienced intraoperative cardiac arrest due to a previously undiagnosed critical left main coronary artery stenosis. The patient was successfully resuscitated, underwent patch coronary ostioplasty, and was discharged home.

Epithelial heme oxygenase-1 enhances colonic tumorigenesis by inhibiting ferroptosis.

Colorectal cancer has been linked to chronic colitis and red meat consumption, which can increase colonic iron and heme. Heme oxygenase-1 ( ) metabolizes heme and releases ferrous iron, but its role in colonic tumorigenesis is not well-described. Recent studies suggest that ferroptosis, the iron-dependent form of cell death, protects against colonic tumorigenesis.

Novel application of the Diabolo technique to restrict pulmonary blood flow in a single ventricle patient with a right ventricle to pulmonary artery conduit.

Balancing pulmonary and systemic circulations in single ventricle patients with a conduit after Stage 1 palliation is challenging. A transcatheter intervention for excessive pulmonary blood flow would provide benefit. We report a case of a critically ill single ventricle patient with symptoms of excessive pulmonary blood flow after Stage 1 despite maximal medical therapy.

Understanding how they feel: Lesson learned from four approaches to soliciting user preferences for new contraceptive products in development.

Background: An expanded range of contraceptive methods could reduce unintended pregnancies. User preferences research is important for successful development of products people want to use. This paper describes four approaches to preferences research soliciting user input in different ways: 1) perspectives on contraceptive method characteristics, 2) reactions to products in development, 3) trade-offs between contraceptive method characteristics, and 4) "blue-sky" ideas on novel contraceptive technologies.

Calculating Relative Lung Perfusion Using Fluoroscopic Sequences and Image Analysis: The Fluoroscopic Flow Calculator.

Background: Maldistribution of pulmonary blood flow in patients with congenital heart disease impacts exertional performance and pulmonary artery growth. Currently, measurement of relative pulmonary perfusion can only be performed outside the catheterization laboratory. We sought to develop a tool for measuring relative lung perfusion using readily available fluoroscopy sequences.

Background: Injectable contraceptives are the most used method in sub-Saharan Africa. We conducted market research to assess potential user attitudes toward 4- and 6-month injectables. We also present user suggestions for marketing these new injectables once they are available.

Service Delivery Considerations for Introducing New Injectable Contraceptives Lasting 4 and 6 Months in Nigeria and Uganda: A Qualitative Study.

Background: New family planning (FP) product introduction requires understanding the target market and support from stakeholders from across the health sector. We aimed to understand the perspectives of FP providers and other stakeholders on the potential introduction of new subcutaneous (SC) depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) injectable contraceptives lasting 4 and 6 months in Nigeria and Uganda.

Methods: Between July 2021 and February 2022, we conducted 48 in-depth interviews (IDIs) and 11 focus group discussions (FGDs) with FP providers and other stakeholders involved with service delivery, program management, and policymaking in Lagos and Abuja in Nigeria and Kampala and Luwero in Uganda.

Background: Interventional therapies for severe pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) can provide right ventricular (RV) decompression and preserve cardiac output. Transcatheter stent placement in a residual ductus arteriosus (PDA) is one potentially effective option in critically ill infants and young children with PAH. We sought to assess recovery of RV function by echocardiographic strain in infants and young children following PDA stenting for acute PAH.

The TNF Mouse as a Model of Intestinal Fibrosis.

Crohn disease (CD) is a highly morbid chronic inflammatory disease. Although many patients with CD also develop fibrostenosing complications, there are no medical therapies for intestinal fibrosis. This is due, in part, to a lack of high-fidelity biomimetic models to enhance understanding and drug development, which highlights the need for developing in vivo models of inflammatory bowel disease-related intestinal fibrosis.

Font disfluency and reading performance in children: An event-related potential study.

Expert adult readers process fluent and disfluent fonts differently, at both early perceptual and late higher-order processing stages. This finding has been interpreted as reflecting the more difficult to read disfluent fonts requiring greater neural resources. We aimed to investigate whether neural activity is affected by font disfluency in pre-adolescent readers, and to determine if neural responses are related to reading performance.

Perspectives on sexual and reproductive health self-care among women, healthcare providers, and other key informants: a mixed-methods study in South Africa and Zambia.

Background: "Self-care" for sexual and reproductive health (SRH) includes contraceptive methods and other supplies that people can use with or without the support of a healthcare provider. Self-administered tests, self-injection of injectable contraception, or self-removal of intrauterine devices (IUDs) can increase people's access to and autonomy over their own SRH. Objectives of this study were to assess women's current interest in and use of SRH self-care and explore key informants' (KI) opinions of self-care, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
