Background: The authors and others have previously described the technique of cementing constrained liners into secure cementless acetabular shells and reported the short-term, average 3.9-year follow-up, using that technique. The purpose of the present study was to report the minimum 15-year follow-up of this same cohort.

Longitudinal Postoperative Course of Pain and Dysfunction Following Total Knee Arthroplasty.

Objectives: Although the majority of patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) report substantial improvement in pain and function, a significant subset experience persistent postsurgical pain and dysfunction. Better understanding of the longitudinal postoperative course is needed, including the association between patient status following physical rehabilitation at 6-weeks post-TKA, to 6-months outcomes. This study aims to described the postoperative course of TKA and examine variables associated with change in pain and functioning between 6-weeks and 6-months post-TKA.

A mechanistic damage model for ligaments.

Purpose: The accuracy of biomechanical models is predicated on the realism by which they represent their biomechanical tissues. Unfortunately, most models use phenomenological ligament models that neglect the behaviour in the failure region. Biomechanical investigation of prolonged driving in an ergonomically designed truck seat prototype.

A postural evaluation during a prolonged driving task was conducted to determine the ergonomic validity of a new freely adjustable truck seat prototype. Twenty participants were recruited to perform two 2-h simulated driving sessions. Postures were assessed using motion capture, accelerometers and pressure pads.

Occupations requiring prolonged periods of static standing are associated with the development of low back pain (LBP). Certain individuals are susceptible to LBP development during prolonged standing (pain developers, PDs) while others are not (non-pain developers, NPDs). Linear centre of pressure (COP) measures suggest that standing balance control is negatively influenced following prolonged standing, and that PDs and NPDs may be differentially affected.

Effect of vitamin E on oxidative stress level in blood, synovial fluid, and synovial tissue in severe knee osteoarthritis: a randomized controlled study.

Background: This study was performed to evaluate the antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects of vitamin E on oxidative stress in the plasma, synovial fluid, and synovial tissue of patients with knee osteoarthritis.

Methods: Seventy-two patients with late-stage knee osteoarthritis scheduled for total knee arthroplasty were randomized to take oral placebo (Group A) or 400 IU of vitamin E (Group B) once a day for 2 months before undergoing surgery. The blood levels of endpoints indicating oxidative stress or antioxidant capacity, Knee Society Score (KSS), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index score (WOMAC), and adverse effects were compared before and after the intervention between the two groups.

Multiple assessments are used clinically after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) including self-report, performance tasks, and physical activity levels. It is unclear if these different functional assessments are interchangeable or if they measure different constructs. Aims: Lumbar fusion is known to reduce the variation in pelvic tilt between standing and sitting. A flexible lumbo-pelvic unit increases the stability of total hip arthroplasty (THA) when seated by increasing anterior clearance and acetabular anteversion, thereby preventing impingement of the prosthesis. Lumbar fusion may eliminate this protective pelvic movement.

SlpE is a calcium-dependent cytotoxic metalloprotease associated with clinical isolates of Serratia marcescens.

Serralysin-like proteases are found in a wide variety of bacteria. These metalloproteases are frequently implicated in virulence and are members of the widely conserved RTX-toxin family. We identified a serralysin-like protease in the genome of a clinical isolate of Serratia marcescens that is highly similar to the canonical serralysin protein, PrtS.

Background: Periprosthetic femur fractures after primary and revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) are one of the most common long-term reasons for reoperation after THA. Previous investigations have analyzed the incidence and risk factors of these fractures. No previous study, however, has analyzed a variation in periprosthetic femur fractures between meteorologic seasons.

A Drug Allergy Clinic (DAC) was established at our institution in combination with an electronic best practice alert (BPA) in the Orthopedic Clinic. Biosimilar Infliximab in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Outcomes of a Managed Switching Programme.

Background And Aims: Biosimilar infliximab CT-P13 offers the potential for large drug acquisition cost savings. However, there are limited published data regarding its efficacy, safety, and immunogenicity in inflammatory bowel disease [IBD], particularly in switching IBD patients from originator to biosimilar infliximab. We present the outcomes of a service evaluation of switching IBD patients established on originator infliximab to biosimilar, using a managed switching programme funded via a gain share agreement in a UK teaching hospital.
