Background/aims: It has been suggested that the vulnerability of gastric mucosa is increased in patients with cirrhosis as a result of a PGE2 deficiency. Therefore, we evaluated whether PGE2 mucosal generation, and gastric potential difference - a reflection of the gastric mucosal barrier - were correlated to endoscopic features and whether these alterations could be alleviated.

Methods: The potential difference was measured before (basal) and after a stimulation test by aspirin.

Gastric motility has not been extensively studied in patients with cirrhosis and gastric antral vascular ectasia (GAVE) may be associated with antropyloric dysfunction. This study therefore looked at antral motility using ultrasound in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis with or without GAVE. Twenty six patients were included: 10 patients with cirrhosis without GAVE, eight patients with cirrhosis and GAVE, and eight controls without liver disease.

Colonoscopy (CS) is currently considered the best diagnostic procedure for colonic imaging. The objectives of this multicentric study were to assess whether CS or simple contrast barium enema (SCBE) has the best effectiveness and tolerance in the elderly (over 80 years old). Except in cases of emergency, 67 elderly patients from 3 centers were randomized among three diagnostic strategies: CS, SCBE or barium enema+rectosigmoidoscopy (BERS).

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the interobserver agreement of cirrhosis symptomatology.

Methods: Eight patients with cirrhosis (without ascites) and 23 patients with chronic liver disease without cirrhosis were included. Four observers (2 juniors and 2 seniors, with 1 specialist and 1 general radiologist in each group) independently evaluated video recordings.

This study compared the response to adenine arabinoside 5'-monophosphate (ARA AMP) in 60 patients with chronic hepatitis B according to the pretreatment serum hepatitis B virus DNA concentration. The level of hepatitis B virus replication was defined as low (30 patients) or high (30 patients) when serum hepatitis B virus DNA concentration was below or above 100 pg/ml, respectively. Patients received a 28 day course of ARA AMP and a second course of ARA AMP was given six months later to patients with persistent hepatitis B virus replication.

Background/aims: Whereas severe portal hypertensive gastropathy and gastric antral vascular ectasia (GAVE) have been separately defined in patients with cirrhosis, there is much confusion in the literature because they are both characterized by red spots at endoscopy. This prospective study compared clinical, biochemical, and pathological features of these syndromes.

Methods: Three groups of patients with cirrhosis and either GAVE (n = 14), severe portal hypertensive gastropathy (n = 14), or no gastric features at endoscopy (controls; n = 10) were included.

Objectives: Learning endosonography (EES) is known to be difficult, and the theory must be understood before performing EES routinely. The aim of the study was to evaluate the diagnostic indexes of EES in the staging of cardio-oesophageal cancer after a period of theoretical apprenticeship of EES and a learning period in a centre experienced in EES since 1989.

Methods: Five observers, having never used EES, followed to EES examinations for a 3-6 month period.

We tested the efficacy of maintenance treatment with alpha-2a interferon, 1 megaunit thrice weekly for 6 months, in preventing relapse of non-A, non-B/C hepatitis in remission after treatment with alpha interferon given thrice weekly according to the following dose schedule: 3 megaunits for 3 months, 2 megaunits for 2 months and 1 megaunit for 1 month. Fifty-three patients with hepatitis C in remission were randomly allocated to a treatment group (n = 26) or a control group (n = 27). A relapse (aminotransferase activity > 1.

We report on the case of a 29-year-old woman, who had been on oral contraceptive steroids for 10 years, in whom four liver haemangiomas were found. At least two of them, and probably a third, have occurred during her second pregnancy. To our knowledge, this is the first report suggesting the occurrence of liver haemangioma during pregnancy.

Tertatolol, a recently developed beta 1-beta 2-blocker has two advantages: it does not induce withdrawal syndrome after abrupt cessation, and it preserves renal function. It has been suggested that the kinetics of tertatolol in patients with hepatic dysfunction are altered. Therefore, the hemodynamic effects and pharmacokinetics following the acute administration of tertatolol were studied in cirrhotic patients with portal hypertension.

The case is reported of a 70 year old man who presented with severe anaemia because of chronic gastrointestinal blood loss. This loss was ascribed to vascular ectasia resembling the gastric antral vascular ectasia syndrome but extended to include the antrum, the duodenum, the jejunum, and, possibly, the cardiac area. This condition was associated with portal hypertension as a result of nodular regenerative hyperplasia.
