In normal skin, proliferation and differentiation are tightly coupled in order to maintain normal architecture in a continually renewing tissue. The temporal and spatial relationships between these two processes in normal, psoriatic, pre-neoplastic and neoplastic skin were investigated by a double immunolabelling technique with Ki67 as a marker of proliferation and involucrin as a marker of terminal differentiation. In normal skin, expression of the two antigens was strictly spatially segregated.

PRISM scores obtained after pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admission predict mortality probability, but no previous efforts to evaluate mortality risk before PICU admission have been reported. Our study was performed on patients admitted to PICUs at four pediatric tertiary care centers to derive a quantitative estimate of hospital mortality probability as a function of PRISM scores obtained at referring hospitals before PICU transfer.

Several studies report an increase in the incidence of adenocarcinoma and have suggested that this reflects changes in smoking habits or, alternatively, that it is a spurious rise due to changes in diagnostic criteria. To examine the latter suggestion we reviewed three cohorts of bronchial carcinoma from 1970, 1980 and 1990, using immunocytochemical techniques to refine diagnosis.

Intravenous injections of technetium 99 m-hexamethylpropyleneamineoxime (99mTc-HMPAO) were administered before surgery and intraoperatively after the first 2 minutes in the first patient and at the end (42 minutes) of cardiopulmonary bypass in the second patient. The total middle cerebral artery territory counts were calculated using the region-of-interest method and compared to cerebellar regional counts.

We investigated an association of brain perfusion changes in stroke patients with stroke severity, volume of brain damage, and recovery.
Methods: Consecutive patients with hemispheric stroke were studied prospectively with serial neurological examinations using the Canadian Neurological Scale (CNS), CT.

F1 hybrid New Zealand Black (NZB) x New Zealand White (NZM) (NZB/NZW) mice spontaneously develop an autoimmune disease analogous to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Testosterone experts a powerful suppressive effect on this disorder in adult NZB/NZW mice. A series of experiments was designed to determine if disease would also be suppressed by exposing fetal NZB/NZW mice to increased testosterone.

Although routine radiological studies of the central nervous system (CNS) or analyses of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples were not done for these patients, primary care physicians detected symptoms or signs that prompted them to perform such studies. CSF samples were examined for 15 of the 57 patients.

The program consisted of a collaborative relationship between primary-care providers and two Psychiatric-Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialists in which women experiencing symptoms of depression were identified and referred to the research program. Data derived from clinical intervention done over a 4-month period with 6 women (42 hours of clinical tapes) was used for analysis.

A muscle biopsy showed features of myositis with a mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate, variation in fibre size and evidence of regeneration. Immunocytochemistry showed the mononuclear cells were composed of macrophages and T-lymphocytes suggesting a cell-mediated response.

The fate of these activated cells and the resolution of the gamma/delta T-cell response with return to the usual alpha/beta T-cell populations in this disease are not clearly understood. At a morphologic level, apoptotic cells are present in the peripheral blood during the acute and resolution phases of the infection.

The most common symptoms include headache, syncope, disordered eye movement, sensory loss, weakness, and cerebellar features such as ataxia. Dysphagia occurs in 5-15% of patients, although only a few reports describe dysphagia as the only presenting symptom.

Automated karyotyping involves evaluating quantified chromosome attributes for proper classification. Chromosome attributes derived from the banding pattern require the correct chromosome polarity for correct banding sequence interpretation. Chromosome polarity is defined in terms of determining the short and long arms of the chromosome using the centromere as the reference point for measuring the chromosome length on both sides of the centromere.

Here we present the refined NMR solution structure of the catalytic domain of stromelysin-1 complexed with a small inhibitor and compare it to the X-ray crystal structure of the same complex. The structures are similar in global fold and show an unusual bottomless S1' subsite.

Automated and nonautomated approaches to chromosome classification involves assessing several chromosome attributes. The centromere is an important attribute which provides insight to other features such as chromosome orientation and the banding pattern sequence. Improving the ability to identify the centromere will enhance feature determination and analysis.
