Early in cancer development, tumour cells express vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a secreted molecule that is important in all stages of angiogenesis, an essential process that provides nutrients and oxygen to the nascent tumor and thereby enhances tumor-cell survival and facilitates growth. Survivin, another protein involved in angiogenesis, is strongly expressed in most human cancers, where it promotes tumor survival by reducing apoptosis as well as favoring endothelial cell proliferation and migration. The mechanisms by which cancer cells induce VEGF expression and angiogenesis upon survivin up-regulation remain to be fully established.

Accumulation of the COMMD1 protein as a druggable pharmacology event to target cancer cells has not been evaluated so far in cancer animal models. We have previously demonstrated that a second-generation peptide, with cell-penetrating capacity, termed CIGB-552, was able to induce apoptosis mediated by stabilization of COMMD1. Here, we explore the antitumor effect by subcutaneous administration of CIGB-552 in a therapeutic schedule.

The presence of the zona pellucida has been perceived as a requirement for the oviductal transfer of cloned embryos at early stages of development while protecting the embryo from an immune system response. We hypothesized that steroid hormone therapy could reduce a potential cellular immune response after the transfer of zona-free cloned embryos into the oviduct of recipient female goats. In Experiment 1, seven does were used to study the systemic immunosuppressant effect of the methylprednisolone administration (for 3 days) on blood cell counts.

Prior reports have described the limitations of quantifying internal training loads using hear rate (HR)-based objective methods such as the training impulse (TRIMP) method, especially when high-intensity interval exercises are performed. A weakness of the TRIMP method is that it does not discriminate between exercise and rest periods, expressing both states into a single mean intensity value that could lead to an underestimate of training loads. This study was designed to compare Banister's original TRIMP method (1991) and a modified calculation procedure (TRIMPc) based on the cumulative sum of partial TRIMP, and to determine how each model relates to the session rating of perceived exertion (s-RPE), a HR-independent training load indicator.

Daily morphological variations have been previously described in the viscacha (Lagostomus maximus maximus) retina. The aim of this work was to determine the effects of lithium administration on the histology of retinas from this nocturnal rodent since lithium is a drug that has been shown to affect different parameters of circadian rhythms. Adult male viscachas were divided into 2 groups, injected daily with lithium chloride or vehicle for 35 days, and sacrificed at 08:00, 16:00, and 24:00 h for light and electron microscopy studies.

We investigated the mechanism of formation and stability of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of methaneselenolate on Au(111) prepared by the immersion method in ethanolic solutions of dimethyl diselenide (DMDSe). The adsorbed species were characterized by electrochemical measurements and high-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy (HR-XPS). The importance of the headgroup on formation mechanism and the stability of the SAMs was addressed by comparatively studying methaneselenolate (MSe) and methanethiolate (MT) monolayers.

Different bacterial traits can contribute to the biocontrol of soilborne phytopathogenic fungus. Among others, (1) antagonism, (2) competition for nutrients and niches, (3) induction of systemic resistance of the plants and (4) predation and parasitism are the most studied. Pseudomonas chlororaphis PCL1606 is an antagonistic rhizobacterium that produces the antifungal metabolite 2-hexyl, 5-propyl resorcinol (HPR).

There are numerous studies on systems comprising an enzyme encapsulated in unilamellar liposomes and its substrate initially present in the external aqueous media. Most of these studies are focused on enzyme stability and activity in a restricted media. However, the rate of the process is also determined by the capacity of the substrate to permeate towards the liposome inner pool.

The leaves of Zuelania guidonia yielded eight new clerodane diterpenes, namely, zuelaguidins A-H (1-8), and the known clerodane diterpene esculentin A (9). Some of these structures contained a 3,6-dihydro-1,2-dioxin moiety. The new compounds were isolated and identified using 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments.

Incidence, etiology, and outcome of infectious episodes in patients with myeloid neoplasms receiving azacitidine are uncertain, with no prospective data available in this group of patients. The aim of the current study was to analyze the incidence and factors related to the probability of infection in a cohort of patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) treated with azacitidine who did not receive any type of antimicrobial prophylaxis. Significantly, the group of patients who received prior intensive chemotherapy had more infectious episodes (P = 10(-4)), and particularly, invasive aspergillosis (P = .

Although radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic fields emitted by mobile phones have received much attention, relatively little is known about the extremely low frequency (ELF) magnetic fields emitted by phones. This paper summarises ELF magnetic flux density measurements on global system for mobile communications (GSM) mobile phones, conducted as part of the MOBI-KIDS epidemiological study. The main challenge is to identify a small number of generic phone models that can be used to classify the ELF exposure for the different phones reported in the study.

Sticholysin II (St II) is a haemolytic toxin isolated from the sea anemone Stichodactyla helianthus. The high haemolytic activity of this toxin is strongly dependent on the red cell status and the macromolecule conformation. In the present communication we evaluate the effect of human serum albumin on St II haemolytic activity and its capacity to form pores in the bilayer of synthetic liposomes.

Single-particle tracking (SPT) has been extensively used to obtain information about diffusion and directed motion in a wide range of biological applications. Recently, new methods have appeared for obtaining precise (10s of nm) spatial information in three dimensions (3D) with high temporal resolution (measurements obtained every 4 ms), which promise to more accurately sense the true dynamical behavior in the natural 3D cellular environment. Despite the quantitative 3D tracking information, the range of mathematical methods for extracting information about the underlying system has been limited mostly to mean-squared displacement analysis and other techniques not accounting for complex 3D kinetic interactions.

Background: The standard practice in allogeneic stem cell transplant (alloSCT) is to infuse peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) the same day or the day after collection once the patient has received conditioning regimen. To obtain and freeze PBSC prior to SCT would be desirable to get a better logistic and to confirm the quality of the product. Unfortunately, studies comparing both approaches are lacking.
