Article Synopsis
  • Infective endocarditis (IE) is a severe condition related to heart valves, and the study focused on how mitral valve prolapse (MVP) increases the risk of developing IE compared to the general population.
  • The research compiled and analyzed data from six relevant studies, revealing that patients with MVP have about 7.83 times greater odds of developing IE.
  • The findings suggest that the significant risk associated with MVP highlights the need for more research and potential preventive measures for those at risk.

Aims: We hypothesize that miRs are key players in the dynamics of the hypertrophy phenotype in aortic stenosis (AS) patients. In our study, we aimed to identify the transcriptional patterns (protein-coding transcripts and miRs) from myocardial sample biopsies that could be associated with the absence of left ventricular (LV) mass regression after aortic valve replacement (AVR) in patients with severe AS and LV hypertrophy.

Methods And Results: We prospectively included 40 patients with severe AS, LV hypertrophy, and preserved ejection fraction undergoing AVR.

Background: Despite significant advances in surgical techniques and perioperative care, people undertaking cardiac surgery due to cardiovascular disease are more prone to the development of postoperative adverse events. Statins (5-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-co-enzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors) are well-known for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects and are established for primary and secondary prevention of coronary artery disease. In addition, statins are thought to have clinical benefits in perioperative outcomes in people undergoing cardiac surgery.

Ischemic heart disease represents a significant global burden of morbidity and mortality. While revascularization strategies are well defined in acute settings, there are uncertainties regarding chronic coronary artery disease treatment. Recent trials have raised doubts about the necessity of revascularization for "stable", chronic coronary syndromes or disease, leading to a shift towards a more conservative approach.

Despite the well-known health benefits of regular physical activity, sedentary behavior and physical inactivity remain a real global pandemic. Exercise is associated with increased life expectancy, improved quality of life and prevention of multiple diseases. Although less implemented in practice compared to aerobic exercise, recent evidence shows that resistance exercise (RE) is also responsible for various benefits, including improvements in body composition, control of several cardiovascular (CV) risk factors, and reduction of CV outcomes.

Background: The mortality associated with high-risk pulmonary embolism (PE) is remarkably high, and reperfusion to unload right ventricle should be a priority. However, several registries report reperfusion underuse. In Portugal, epidemiological data about the incidence, rate of reperfusion and mortality of high-risk PE are not known.

Respiratory disease and atrial fibrillation (AF) frequent coexist, but the risk of AF among asthma patients is less characterized. Growing evidence suggest that AF shares with asthma a systemic inflammation background and asthma treatments, such as beta agonists, have been associated with increased risk of cardiac arrhythmias. The aim of this systematic review was to assess the risk of AF in patients with asthma in observational studies.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the reuse of treated effluent in the production of thermomechanical pulp (TMP) using Aspen Plus simulations.
  • The treated effluent was tested at 50%, 75%, and 100% replacement of well water, and the impact on non-process elements (NPEs) was measured alongside product quality.
  • Results indicated that effluent reuse maintained pulp quality, with brightness values similar to those produced with fresh water, suggesting potential water savings for pulp mills.

Article Synopsis
  • Atrial fibrillation is a common heart rhythm disorder that significantly impacts public health and economics, and this study aims to explore how using oral anticoagulants affects stroke rates in people with this condition in mainland Portugal.
  • Researchers analyzed hospital data from January 2012 to December 2018 to assess the frequency of stroke cases linked to atrial fibrillation and the number of patients using anticoagulants, including both traditional and newer medications.
  • Findings indicate that as the use of oral anticoagulants increased from 2012 to 2018, the incidence of strokes related to atrial fibrillation decreased, with a notable reduction of about 833 stroke cases (4.2%) attributed to the switch to newer anticoagulants between
