Purpose: To evaluate ultrasonographic (US)-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) of intraductal masses performed immediately after galactography and to compare cytologic findings from US-guided FNA with those from nipple discharge.

Materials And Methods: In 36 patients with nipple discharge from a single duct in one breast and intraductal masses diagnosed at galactography, US was performed to detect intraductal lesions and perform FNA before removal of the galactographic catheter. Cytologic analysis of nipple discharge, excisional biopsy, and histopathologic evaluation were performed in all patients.

The response rate and the determinants of response to a cisplatin-based regimen of neodjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) in women with a histologically confirmed first-diagnosis of invasive bulky stage IB-IIB cervical cancer are analyzed. A total of 79 cases were treated with cisplatin (40 mg/m2) each 7 days for seven courses. During the first, fourth, and seventh cycles, ifosfamide (3.

Forty-six patients receiving frozen bone allografts, preoperatively tissue typed for human leukocyte antigen and ABO antigens, were radiographically evaluated according to the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society scoring system at a mean followup of 55 months. Patients who matched for 1 or 2 Class I human leukocyte antigens with the donor scored higher than patients totally mismatched, but differences were not significant. Matching for Class II human leukocyte antigen and ABO antigens seemed not to influence radiographic outcome of allografts.

The aim of this study was to evaluate through the auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) the electrical events generated along the auditory pathway in 56 adult patients affected with hyper- and hypothyroidism. Twenty-four normal-hearing hyperthyroid patients affected with Graves' disease and 32 normal-hearing hypothyroid patients (9 with subclinical and 23 with overt hypothyroidism) were subjected to standard (clicks at 21 pps) and sensitized ABR with masking wide-band (masking noise). In addition, thyroid scintiscan and ultrasonography, free T3 and T4, total T3 and T4, TSH, antimicrosomal and antithyroglobulin antibodies, audiogram and impedance tests were performed in all the patients.

Seven patients with a presumptive diagnosis of osteoid osteoma located at the hip were treated with percutaneous resection of the nidus through computed tomography guidance. Histologic confirmation was obtained in 5 of the 7 patients. The average hospital stay was 27 hours.

The ability of CRH to cause a paradoxical response of GH in acromegaly is still under debate. In this study, the effect of CRH administration on GH release was evaluated in a large series of patients with active acromegaly, both in vivo, compared to that of TRH and GnRH, and in vitro. The study was organized as follows.

The results of bone-allograft reconstruction after the resection of giant-cell tumor close to the knee were reviewed in fifty-two patients (fifty-five allografts), who had been followed for a mean of seven years (range, two to twenty-four years). One giant-cell tumor was graded as stage 1; twenty, as stage 2; and thirty-one, as stage 3. Three reconstructions were repeated transplants that were done after the failure of a previous transplant.

Aims And Background: The usefulness of monoclonal antibodies that recognize markers of neoplastic lesions in complementing conventional cytology was evaluated by the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex, indirect immunoperoxidase technique.

Methods: In order to enhance the sensitivity of the traditional method, a pool of seven combined monoclonal antibodies (Pool C7), which reacts specifically with cells of epithelial origin and is able to distinguish between mesothelial and malignant cells, was tested on cytologic smears of 262 serous effusions. The effusions were benign or neoplastic, mainly from breast, ovary and lung cancers.

An extensive study of the expression of the blood group-related antigen CaMBr1 has been performed by immunohistochemistry, immunoblotting and high performance thin layer chromatography both on frozen and paraffin-embedded (paraffin) samples from normal and neoplastic breast tissues. The glycolipid antigenic fraction (from frozen samples) was preferentially expressed on functioning breast epithelium. In a prospective series of 143 breast cancer cases CaMBr1 expression was associate, on frozen sections, with the transferrin receptor (P = 0.

Six massive femoral allografts followed up for 22 to 36 years are described. Three were intercalary, two were osteoarticular and one was a total femoral replacement. Their functional rating according to the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society System (Enneking 1987) averaged 82% (56 to 100).

A human liver lambda gt11 library was screened with antibodies raised to a purified rat liver carboxylesterase, and several clones were isolated and sequenced. The longest cDNA contained an open reading frame of 507 amino acids that represented 92% of the sequence of a mature carboxylesterase protein. This sequence possessed many structural features that are highly conserved among rabbit and rat liver carboxylesterase proteins, including Ser, His, and Asp residues that comprise the active site, two pairs of Cys residues that may participate in disulfide bond formation, and one Asn-Xxx-Thr site for N-linked carbohydrate addition.

In the anterior pituitary gland changes in prolactin synthesis and in the incorporation of [3H]thymidine into DNA are coincident under several experimental conditions. We investigated whether these changes are obligatory, thus indicating a regulatory mechanism common to the synthesis of both macromolecules. Alternatively, the parallel changes may represent similar responses to various stimuli operating through different pathways.

Hyperprolactinaemia produced in rats by the transplanted prolactin-secreting tumours MtTW15 and 7315a significantly (P less than 0.01) inhibited by 70% the incorporation of [3H]thymidine into the pituitary DNA of the host animals. The weight and the DNA content of the glands were significantly (P less than 0.

We investigated the effects of lisuride, a potent dopaminergic agent, administered in vivo on the incorporation of 3H-thymidine into DNA and 3H-leucine into prolactin and its subsequent release by the rat anterior pituitary gland in vitro. The results demonstrated that daily injection of 100 micrograms of lisuride for 7 days significantly (p less than 0.05) diminished (about 35%) the incorporation of 3H-thymidine into DNA and reduced the stimulation of DNA synthesis produced by estrogens.
