Introduction: Successful closure of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) can be obtained with surgical ligation or with occlusion via minimally invasive per-catheter techniques. This study was performed to assess feasibility and effectiveness of transjugular PDA occlusion in dogs weighing < 3 kg with a device called Nit-Occlud® PDA.

Animals: Thirteen client-owned dogs.

Article Synopsis
  • - Researchers investigated Anaplasma and Ehrlichia infections in beef cattle in Maputo, Mozambique, due to a lack of data on their economic impact and epidemiology.
  • - They collected blood samples from 200 healthy cattle and performed DNA testing, finding a high prevalence of Anaplasma marginale (71%) and Ehrlichia ruminantium (9.5%), with some co-infections.
  • - The study revealed significant genetic diversity in the Anaplasma species and identified five new genotypes of Ehrlichia ruminantium in the cattle from this region.

Small ruminants, particularly goats and sheep, are key livestock species in Mozambique, and their production is mainly undertaken by families. However, small ruminants are often plagued by diseases that can cause considerable economic damage. In this context, traditional remedies, including various plant species, have been widely used to manage these diseases.

Powdery mildew (PM) in is most frequently caused by the biotrophic fungus . Based on previously characterized variation in susceptibility to PM, biparental populations were developed by crossing the most resistant cultivar evaluated, 'FL 58', with a susceptible cultivar, 'TJ's CBD'. F progeny were evaluated and displayed a range of susceptibility, and two were self-pollinated to generate two F populations.

Background: Orthognathic clinics across England are currently run in a multidisciplinary team (MDT) format. It is, however, likely that there is a large variation in the style of these clinics and care pathways for orthognathic patients across the country. This was a cross-sectional, online questionnaire with a primary aim to obtain information on the way orthognathic care is currently delivered throughout England.

Background: Cardiac auscultation is one of the most important clinical tools to identify patients with a potential heart disease. Although several publications have reported the prevalence of murmurs in cats, little information is available in relation to the exact origin of the blood flow turbulences responsible for these murmurs. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and clinical significance of murmurs detected during physical examination in cats.

Donkeys (Equus asinus) are rustic animals, but in Africa's poorest regions, they can present multiple health problems, including tick infestation. The study's objective was to determine the species composition of ticks that infest donkeys in Maputo Province (Mozambique). Ticks were collected in five conveniently selected southern districts of Maputo Province (Moamba, Matutuíne, Marracuene, Boane, and Matola) and were identified to species level using a stereoscopic microscope with the aid of dichotomous identification keys.

Shrub willows ( spp.) are emerging as a viable lignocellulosic, second-generation bioenergy crop with many growth characteristics favorable for marginal lands in New York State and surrounding areas. Willow rust, caused by members of the genus , is the most limiting disease of shrub willow in this region and remains extremely understudied.

The breeding of hybrid cultivars of hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) is not well described, especially the segregation and inheritance of traits that are important for yield. A total of 23 families were produced from genetically diverse parents to investigate the inheritance of morphological traits and their association with biomass accumulation and cannabinoid yield.

Rotavirus A (RVA) is an important pathogen causing gastroenteritis in many species, including humans and pigs. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of RVA in pigs from smallholdings and commercial farms in southern Mozambique and characterize the complete genomes of selected strains. RVA was detected at a rate of 11.

Strigolactones are natural products that are exuded by plants and stimulate parasitic weed germination. Their use in herbicides is limited since they are produced in small quantities, but the synthesis of bioactive analogues provides an alternative source. In this work, eleven analogues have been synthesized.

Background: In Mozambique, bacterial and parasitic diseases contribute to a high burden of mortality and morbidity. These infectious diseases are treated with antibiotics, antihelmintic or antiparasitic drugs. However, misuse of these has been affecting the potential to treat ailments.

It has been hypothesized that the α-methylene-γ-lactone moiety of sesquiterpene lactones is a key unit for their bioactivity. As a consequence, modifications of these compounds have been focused on this fragment. In the work reported here, two sesquiterpene lactones, namely, dehydrocostuslactone and β-cyclocostunolide, a eudesmanolide obtained by controlled cyclization of costunolide, were chosen for modification by Michael addition at C-13.

Postmortem vitreous humor biochemistry is a useful test in the diagnosis of salt water drowning (SWD). A significant limitation of vitreous humor is the potential effect of prolonged immersion. A recent animal study and case report suggested that cerebrospinal fluid biochemistry may be an alternative to vitreous because it is more resistant to the effects of immersion, given its protected anatomical location.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is often analyzed at postmortem. The presented preliminary study compared postmortem CSF samples for biochemical analysis from the subarachnoid space around the spinal cord and ventricular space of the brain. This study compared 15 paired CSF samples in which the CSF from the subarachnoid space via lumbar puncture had higher sodium and chloride levels and lower magnesium and potassium levels than CSF from the ventricles.

Diagnosing death due to drowning can be difficult, and several postmortem findings have been postulated to aid the diagnosis. Increased lung weights are often seen in drowning deaths. Lung-body (LB) ratio was described to be the best anatomical lung measurement in diagnosing drowning.

Lung weights are often increased in drowning deaths as well as in other types of deaths. Lung weights may also vary with age, sex, and body weight. A variety of methods have been proposed to utilize lung weight data to assist with the diagnosis of drowning.

Background: Postmortem vitreous sodium (Na) and chloride (Cl) are good ancillary tests in diagnosing salt-water drowning. Vitreous Na and Cl appear to elevate from salt-water drowning and immersion, whereas vitreous magnesium (Mg) appears to be unaffected by drowning, but elevates from immersion. The relative changes of these electrolytes during salt-water immersion are unknown, particularly with shorter immersion times.

Elevation of postmortem vitreous sodium and chloride (PMVSC) levels in salt water drowning (SWD) is hypothesized to result from electrolyte changes in blood from salt water inhalation/ingestion during drowning. After approximately 1 hour after death, electrolytes may diffuse into the vitreous humor via the eye coverings. This hypothesis was based on a study where bovine eyeballs were immersed in salt water.

Background: The study of post mortem vitreous magnesium (Mg) is less common than sodium (Na), chloride (Cl) and potassium (K) in the forensic literature. There is no accepted normal range for post mortem vitreous Mg and the relationship between post mortem vitreous Mg levels and post mortem interval (PMI), other electrolyte levels, disease conditions, age and sex have not been fully established.

Aim: To investigate the relationship of post mortem vitreous Mg with age, sex, PMI, vitreous electrolyte levels and diabetic status.

Serum mast cell tryptase is used to support the diagnosis of anaphylaxis. The recommended clinical cut-off for total tryptase (<11.4μg/L) appears unsuitable in the post mortem setting due to largely unknown processes which result in significantly elevated levels in these samples.
