Background: Epidemiologic researches about oral mucosal lesions have been performed in different populations. But, in dermatology outpatients, oral mucosal lesions have not been investigated previously.
Objective: We aimed to determine the prevalence of oral mucosal lesions among dermatology outpatients and the relationship between OML and smoking, alcohol intake, denture and dental filling use and skin diseases.

Objectives: The city of Windsor is recognized to have poor air quality in comparison with other Canadian cities. However, relatively few studies have evaluated associations between day-to-day fluctuations in air pollution levels and respiratory health in Windsor. In this study, we examined associations between short-term changes in ambient air pollution and emergency department (ED) visits for asthma in Windsor.

Objective: We investigated the relation between traffic volume and respiratory health of 2328 children 9 to 11 years old in the city of Windsor, Canada.
Methods: We identified the roadways within a 200 meter radius of the child's neighborhood using the latitude and longitude of the residential postal code.

Hydatid cyst disease is a parasitic infection which is caused by the metacestode form of Echinococcus granulosus and affects primarily the liver and lung. Bone involvement is found in 1% of patients afflicted with this disease. The spine is involved in about 50% of these cases.

Background: Clinical experiments demonstrate that the asthmatic response to an aeroallergen can be enhanced by prior exposure to an air pollutant.
Objective: We sought to compare the effects of ambient aeroallergens on hospitalization for asthma between high and low air pollution days in 11 large Canadian cities.
Methods: Daily time-series analysis was used, and results were adjusted for day of the week, temperature, barometric pressure, and relative humidity.
Background: Air pollution has been associated with adverse cardiovascular effects.
Objective: To measure the association between air pollution, spirometry, blood pressure, and exercise capacity.
Methods: We used data from 5604 subjects collected during the Canada Health Measures Survey to test the association between air pollution measured on the day of the survey and spirometry (n=5011 subjects), blood pressure, and exercise capacity (n=3789 subjects).
Clinical characteristics of vitiligo had been reported in different countries previously. This is the second report from Turkey and it is from a different region of Turkey, middle Anatolia, and a more detailed study. The age and sex of patients, onset age, duration, areas of involvement, course, clinical types and severity of the disease, family history of vitiligo, associated disorders, the values of vitamin B12, folic acid, ferritin, iron and hemoglobin, antithyroglobulin and antithyroid peroxidase antibodies and positivity of viral markers were obtained from the records of the patients retrospectively.

Nanofiber diameters were found to be 284 ± 48 nm for PCL and 330 ± 104 nm for PCL/collagen matrices. The porosities were calculated as 85% for PCL and 90% for PCL/collagen matrices.

One part of this challenge will be greater heat-related mortality. Populations in the northern hemisphere will experience temperature increases exceeding the global average, but whether this will increase or decrease total temperature-related mortality burdens is debated.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFRationale: The estimated mortality rate associated with ambient air pollution based on general population studies may not be applicable to certain subgroups.
Objective: The objective of the present study was to determine the influence of age, education, employment status and income on the risk of mortality associated with ambient air pollution.
Methods: Daily time-series analyses tested the association between daily air pollution and daily mortality in seven Chilean urban centers during the period January 1997-December 2007.

Objectives: This study aims to point out the long-term results of fibrin sealant in the treatment of acute ruptures of the Achilles tendon.
Patients And Methods: Between January 1998 and December 2007, 42 patients (42 males; mean age 37.8 years; range 27 to 56 years) admitted to our clinic for acute ruptures of the Achilles tendon were treated with a fibrin sealant.
Purpose: To assess the potential of a single-session multidetector computed tomography (CT) protocol, as compared with established methods, for the etiologic work-up of acute ischemic stroke.
Materials And Methods: Patients found to have recently experienced an ischemic stroke were recruited for this prospective study after institutional review board approval was obtained. Each patient was scheduled for two evaluation strategies: (a) a standard approach involving transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), duplex ultrasonography (US) of the neck vessels, and magnetic resonance (MR) angiography of the neck and brain vessels; and (b) a protocol involving single-session multidetector CT of the heart, neck, and brain vessels.
The authors assessed the clinical efficacy, tolerability and safety of acitretin in a patient with ichthyosis. A newborn infant with ichthyosis who presented at birth with collodion baby appearance, was treated with acitretin. A moderate response to acitretin therapy (1 mg/kg/day) administered for 6 months was observed, with improvement in cutaneous lesions.

Introduction: This paper reports a mental health assessment of 60 homeless youth. Our study explored the mental health needs of youth accessing an overnight youth shelter (maximum stay 8 weeks).
Methods: Participants completed an interview (45 to 120 minutes in duration) using one demographic form and one of two standardized questionnaires (Youth Self Report, Adult Self Report).

Objective: To evaluate the clinical outcome and efficacy of endocanalicular laser dacryocystorhinostomy using a multidiode laser in cases unresponsive to medical therapy, probing or intubation of pediatric nasolacrimal duct obstruction.
Methods: Eight children with nasolacrimal duct obstruction were treated with a multidiode laser. The study was prospective, non-randomized, and noncomparative.
Background: The quadriceps femoris muscle ruptures usually occur in the middle-aged population. We present a 4-year-old patient with partial rupture of the quadriceps femoris muscle. To our knowledge, this is the youngest patient reported with a quadriceps femoris muscle rupture.

Objective: To compare the results of probing with and without endoscopy in cases of congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction who had previously not undergone probing.
Methods: Fifty-one children with congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction who underwent surgical intervention between June 2007 and April 2009 in our hospital were included in the study. Patients who had had previous probings were excluded from the study.

Headache is a common problem among adolescents, and variations can be observed in headache types and characteristics. The present study aimed to reach 5562 Turkish children who were investigated six years previously in a school-based childhood headache project, and to evaluate their current headache status. Investigators interviewed the available students with structured questionnaires.

Method: A daily time-series analyses tested the association between daily hospitalization for epilepsy in seven Chilean urban centers during the period 2001 and 2005.
Objective: There are contrasting results obtained in migraineurs concerning the levels and the role of both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines. In this study, the association of the occurrence and clinical characteristics of migraine with the polymorphisms of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) -308 G/A (rs1800629), interleukin-1alpha (IL-1alpha) +4845 G/T (rs17561), IL-1beta+3953 C/T (rs1143634) and interleukin-1 receptor antagonist variable number tandem repeat (IL-1RA VNTR) genes were studied. We also investigated the genetic linkage between these genes.

Background: Ambient air pollution is a risk factor for stroke and myocardial infarction, possibly because of alterations in coagulation that influence the arterial circulation. Whether air pollution influences diseases associated with peripheral venous thrombogenesis remains largely unknown.
Objectives: To determine the association between air pollution and venous thromboembolic disease (VTE) in a sample of the general population.
Background: There are few published clinical trials concerning upper gastrointestinal (GI) involvement in Behçet's disease (BD), and most have been performed on patients with upper GI tract symptoms.
Aim: We sought to determine whether routine endoscopy is indicated in asymptomatic patients with BD and whether Helicobacter pylori plays a role in the pathogenesis of BD.
Methods: Forty consecutive patients with BD and 40 age- and gender-matched controls with tinea pedis were studied.
