HFpEF is a prevalent and complex type of heart failure. The concurrent presence of conditions such as obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia significantly increase the risk of developing HFpEF. Mitochondria, often referred to as the powerhouses of the cell, are crucial in maintaining cellular functions, including ATP production, intracellular Ca regulation, reactive oxygen species generation and clearance, and the regulation of apoptosis.

Article Synopsis
  • - Exercise enhances heart function and metabolism, but its impact on protein modifications like lactylation is not fully understood.
  • - The study finds that lactate regulates changes in heart muscle cells (cardiomyocytes) by increasing protein lactylation and levels of the RNA-binding protein YTHDF2, which affects cell size and apoptosis during stress conditions.
  • - Targeting lactylation or inhibiting YTHDF2 could provide new treatment strategies for heart diseases by promoting healthy cardiac adaptations to exercise.

Among the various treatments, induction of synoviocyte apoptosis by natural products during a rheumatoid arthritis (RA) pathological condition can be considered to have vast potential. However, it is unclear that liquiritin, a kind of natural flavonoid extracted from the roots of Glycyrrhiza uralensis, induced the apoptosis of the synovial membrane and its molecular mechanism. In this study, interleukin-1β (IL-1β)-RA-FLS cells were incubated with different concentrations of liquiritin.
