Background: The product of the SEC14L2 (SEC14 Like Lipid Binding 2) gene belongs to a family of lipid-binding proteins including Sec14p, alpha-tocopherol transfer protein, and cellular retinol-binding protein. SEC14L2 expression enables replication of clinical hepatitis C virus (HCV) isolates in several hepatoma cell lines, and mutations in SEC14L2 may enhance HCV replication in vitro.
