Augmented Reality-Based Finger Joint Range of Motion Measurement: Assessment of Reliability and Concurrent Validity.

Purpose: This study aimed to determine the reliability and concurrent validity of finger joint range of motion (ROM) measurement using augmented reality (AR)-based hand tracking in a sample of healthy hands. Additionally, the study aimed to determine which camera view of the hand provided ROM measurements with the highest concurrent validity at each joint.

Methods: A web application developed for smart devices using Google's MediaPipe Hands framework converted AR-generated hand landmark coordinates from camera feed into ROM angle measurements in real time for all joints.

Family Planning Among Canadian Plastic Surgeons and Trainees.

Despite increasing advocacy for family leave policies, few studies have described the current landscape and attitudes around family planning in Canadian plastic surgery. The purpose of this study was to survey Canadian plastic surgeons and trainees to examine their experience with family planning, parental leave, and breastfeeding. An anonymized survey was distributed to all members of the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons and all Canadian Plastic Surgery residents through their program administrators.

A Canadian National Survey Study of Harassment in Surgery-Still a Long Way to Go.

Objectives: Previous literature has consistently documented harassment and discrimination in surgery. These experiences may contribute to the continuing gender inequity in surgical fields. The objective of our study was to survey Canadian surgeons and surgical trainees to gain a greater understanding of the experience of harassment across genders, career stage, and specialty.

Fresh Frozen Cartilage in Rhinoplasty Surgery: A Systematic Review of Outcomes.

Introduction: Cadaveric fresh frozen cartilage provides an enticing alternative to traditional autologous cartilage grafts. This review provides a systematic analysis of existing literature on the use of fresh frozen rib for in rhinoplasties and focuses on clinical and aesthetic outcomes.

Methods: The methodology was designed and registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD42023447166).

Liposuction-Only Breast Reduction: A Systematic Review of Outcomes.

Introduction: Over the past few decades, there have been multiple reports of liposuction assisted breast reduction. This technique appeals to patients due to the limited scars and complication profile, compared to traditional reduction mammaplasty techniques. We aimed to systematically review the literature, to elucidate the outcomes and safety of liposuction-only breast reduction.

Assessment of finger dexterity through the DIGITS joint tracking web application-An evaluation study with comparison to the nine-hole pegboard test.

Background: Hand dexterity is an important clinical marker after hand surgery as it can greatly impact one's ability to perform their day-to-day activities. With the increased focus on remote patient monitoring after hand surgery, new technologies are required to remotely monitor hand dexterity.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify dexterity outcomes using the web application "DIGITS" and compare these outcomes to the nine-hole-pegboard test (NHPT).

Telerehabilitation Technology Used for Remote Wrist/Finger Range of Motion Evaluation: A Scoping Review.

Background: Monitoring finger/wrist range of motion (ROM) is an important component of routine hand therapy after surgery. Telerehabilitation is a field that may potentially address various barriers of in-person hand therapy appointments. Therefore, the purpose of this scoping review is to identify telerehabilitation technologies that can be feasibly used in a patient's home to objectively measure finger/wrist ROM.

Next-Generation Remote Hand Assessments: Cross-Platform DIGITS Web Application.

Purpose: We have previously developed DIGITS, a platform for remote evaluation of range of motion, dexterity, and swelling of fingers for reducing barriers to accessing clinical resources. The current study was aimed at evaluating DIGITS across different devices with varied operating systems and camera resolutions using a single person's hands.

Methods: Our team has now developed a web application version of the DIGITS platform, which makes it accessible on any device that is equipped with a camera, including computers, tablets, and smartphones.

Regional Wait Times for Patients With Nonmelanoma Skin Cancer in Southwestern Ontario.

Background: Nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) affects many Canadians. Although morbidity and mortality are rare, the burden to patients and the health-care system is significant. This study aims to evaluate current plastic surgery wait times and care pathways for patients with NMSC in Southwestern Ontario.

Variation of Grip Strength and Wrist Range of Motion with Forearm Rotation in Healthy Young Volunteers Aged 23 to 30.

Grip strength and wrist range of motion (ROM) are important metrics used to evaluate hand rehabilitation and outcomes of wrist interventions. Published normative data on these metrics do not recognize the contribution of forearm rotation. This study aims to identify and quantify variations in grip strength and wrist ROM with forearm rotation in healthy young individuals.

Implementation of an Acute Care Surgery Service Facilitates Modern Clinical Practice Guidelines for Gallstone Pancreatitis.

Background: Current practice guidelines for management of gallstone pancreatitis (GSP) recommend early cholecystectomy for patient stabilization and bile duct clearance, preferably at index admission. Historically, this has been difficult to achieve due to lack of emergency surgical resources. We investigated whether implementation of an acute care surgery (ACS) model would allow better adherence to current practice guidelines for GSP.

Hyaluronan-phosphatidylethanolamine polymers form pericellular coats on keratinocytes and promote basal keratinocyte proliferation.

Aged keratinocytes have diminished proliferative capacity and hyaluronan (HA) cell coats, which are losses that contribute to atrophic skin characterized by reduced barrier and repair functions. We formulated HA-phospholipid (phosphatidylethanolamine, HA-PE) polymers that form pericellular coats around cultured dermal fibroblasts independently of CD44 or RHAMM display. We investigated the ability of these HA-PE polymers to penetrate into aged mouse skin and restore epidermal function in vivo.

Complications associated with operative versus nonsurgical treatment of distal radius fractures in patients aged 65 years and older.

Purpose: To compare complication rates for distal radius fractures treated operatively versus nonsurgical in patients older than 65 years. We hypothesized that surgical intervention would improve fracture alignment, but it would be associated with more complications and equivalent functional outcomes when compared with the nonsurgical group.

Methods: Patients (operative, n = 129) and controls (nonsurgical, n = 129) were identified from a prospective clinical and operating room database.

Computed tomography-based preoperative vascular imaging in autologous breast reconstruction: A Canadian perspective.

There appears to be increased use of computed tomography angiography (CTA) in the preoperative planning of autologous perforator flap breast reconstruction. Despite the advantages of providing superior anatomical detail, concerns regarding cost and radiation exposure of this technique remain. In the current study, a paper-based survey was distributed to 44 plastic surgeons with a special interest in breast reconstruction at 19 different centres across Canada to collect their perspectives and practice characteristics with respect to the use of CTA as a preoperative imaging modality in breast reconstruction.

Social Support Contributes to Outcomes following Distal Radius Fractures.

Background. Distal radius fractures are the most common fracture of the upper extremity and cause variable disability. This study examined the role of social support in patient-reported pain and disability at one year following distal radius fracture.

Background: Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and Y-DNA analysis have been widely used to predict ancestral origin. Genetic anthropologists predict that human civilizations may have originated in central Africa one to two million years previously. Primary iron overload is not a common diagnosis among indigenous people of northern Africa, but hereditary hemochromatosis is present in approximately one in 200 people in northern Europe.

Muscle strength and fatigue in patients with generalized myasthenia gravis.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is characterized by fatigue and fluctuating muscle weakness resulting from impaired neuromuscular transmission (NMT). The objective of this study was to quantify, by direct measurement of muscle force, the strength and fatigue of patients with MG. A maximal voluntary isometric contraction protocol of shoulder abductors was used in conjunction with conventional fatigue and disease-severity instruments.
