A cubic, 12-connected, microporous metal-organometallic phosphate framework sustained by truncated tetrahedral nodes.

A rare example of a microporous metal-organic phosphate, [Co(12)(L)(6)(μ(3)-PO(4))(4)(μ(3)-F)(4)(μ-H(2)O)(6)][NO(3)](2) (1), is synthesized by the reaction of a [(η(5)-C(5)H(5))Fe(II)](+)-functionalized terephthalate ligand with Co(NO(3))(2)·6H(2)O and phosphate and fluoride ions generated from the in situ hydrolysis of hexafluorophosphate. 1 is a cubic, 12-connected, face-centered cubic framework sustained by the linear connection of unprecedented, dodecanuclear truncated tetrahedral coordination clusters.

Noise levels required to mask stimuli used in auditory brainstem response testing.

The levels of noise necessary to effectively mask the stimuli commonly used in auditory brainstem response (ABR) tests were determined. The relative masking level (RLM) of twenty normally-hearing volunteers was measured behaviourally using ipsilaterally presented unfiltered noise in the presence of ABR stimuli. The upper limit for RLM was found to be typically 30 dB above the stimulus level when the stimulus was calibrated in dBnHL to ISO 389-6 (2007) and the noise was measured in dBSPL.

Facing up to uncertain life expectancy: the longevity fan charts.

This article uses longevity fan charts to represent the uncertainty in projections of future life expectancy. These fan charts are based on a mortality model calibrated on mortality data for English and Welsh males. The fan charts indicate strong upward sloping trends in future life expectancy.

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy and ventriculoperitoneal shunts: a dangerous combination?

Background: We report the largest European series of patients in whom both ventriculoperitoneal shunts (VPS) and percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomies (PEG) have been inserted with the aim of determining if this combination is safe or if there is an increased risk of VPS infection.

Patients And Methods: The paper and electronic records of 302 patients who had a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt inserted in the regional Neurosciences unit at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust between 2002 and 2007 were reviewed.

Results: A total of 24 patients with VP shunts had 26 PEG inserted.

A systematic review of the effects of dynamic exercise in rheumatoid arthritis.

Exercise is commonly used in the management of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA); however, there is little consensus in the literature to support its use. This systemic review aimed to determine the effects of dynamic exercise on patients with RA. A systematic search of Medline (1949–2007), Cinahl (1982–2007), Embase (1974–2007) and Cochrane library was performed for randomised-controlled trials using the keywords “rheumatoid arthritis” and “exercise” or “training” or “sport”.

In the title compound, C(7)H(5)FO(2)·C(7)H(7)NO, a moderate-strength hydrogen bond is formed between the carboxyl group of one mol-ecule and the pyridine N atom of the other. The benzoic acid mol-ecule is observed to be disordered over two positions with the second orientation only 4% occupied. This disorder is also reflected in the presence of diffuse scattering in the diffraction pattern.

Background: High-quality rectal cancer surgery is known to improve patient outcome. We aimed to assess the quality of colon cancer surgery by studying the extent of variation in the plane of surgical resection, the amount of tissue removed, and its association with survival.

Methods: All resections for primary colon adenocarcinoma done at Leeds General Infirmary (Leeds, UK) between Jan 1, 1997, and June 30, 2002, were identified.

Topiramate-induced psychosis in two members of the one family: a case report.

Introduction: The use of topiramate has increased in recent years. It is now used by various specialties to treat a wide range of medical conditions. A small number of case reports describe psychosis as an adverse event of topiramate but most are in patients being treated for epilepsy and none describe a family history of this side effect.

Does fructan have a functional role in physiological traits? Investigation by quantitative trait locus mapping.

Cerebrovascular dysplasia in neurofibromatosis type 1.

Objective: To assess the frequency and clinical characteristics of the increasingly recognised complication of cerebrovascular dysplasia in children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1).

Methods: A series of seven patients with NF1 and cerebrovascular dysplasias that were not secondary to radiotherapy were identified and prospectively assessed. An extensive review of the literature was also performed to identify associated features and the natural history of this potentially severe complication of NF1.

The role of healthcare communications agencies in maintaining compliance when working with the pharmaceutical industry and healthcare professionals.

Background: Relationships between the pharmaceutical industry and healthcare professionals continue to drive discussion about the potential for conflicts of interest. Despite greater regulation and oversight, there are still calls for increased transparency and further restrictions on these relationships. Regulatory authorities, the pharmaceutical industry, professional societies, and other interested parties have responded by developing robust guidelines for interactions between the pharmaceutical industry and healthcare professionals.

The use of intranasal midazolam in the treatment of paediatric dental patients.

The aim of this study was to assess the use of intranasal midazolam in paediatric dental patients requiring extractions or simple surgical procedures who may otherwise have required a general anaesthetic. Twenty children aged between 2-9 years who required simple surgical procedures were given 0.25 mg.

Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy: diagnostic evaluation, frequency and clues to pathogenesis.

We characterized the frequency of limb-girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD) subtypes in a cohort of 76 Australian muscular dystrophy patients using protein and DNA sequence analysis. Calpainopathies (8%) and dysferlinopathies (5%) are the most common causes of LGMD in Australia. In contrast to European populations, cases of LGMD2I (due to mutations in FKRP) are rare in Australasia (3%).

A patient with a macrodont, transposition and supplemental tooth in the upper anterior segment: a case report.

Unlabelled: This case report describes the presence of multiple dental anomalies in the upper labial segment of a 7-year-old boy; a macrodont, transposition and supplemental tooth.

Clinical Relevance: This case highlights the need for careful treatment planning in patients with mutiple dental anomalies.

Exposure to nitrous oxide in a paediatric dental unit.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the 8-h time-weighted average (8-h TWA) exposure to nitrous oxide of dentists working in a paediatric dental unit, and to relate this to various operator, patient and environmental factors.

Methods: This prospective, open-label study monitored nitrous oxide levels using either a personal dosimeter or an electronic sensor worn by the operator. Information was recorded by three dental operators administering nitrous oxide/oxygen for inhalational sedation.

Bryophyte dispersal by flying foxes: a novel discovery.

This research provides the first evidence of dispersal of bryophytes and associated microorganisms through ingestion by a highly mobile vertebrate vector, the spectacled flying fox (Pteropus conspicillatus). Bryophyte fragments were found in faeces collected at four P. conspicillatus' camps in the Wet Tropics bioregion, northeastern Australia.
