To investigate the clown ideologies that circulate in a hospital scenario, in this paper, we describe the origins of hospital clowns, evaluate their professional training, and discuss their contemporary role. For this descriptive, historical documentary, and qualitative study, we carried out searches in academic databases such as PubMed and LILACS in April 2021. The insufficiency of these results motivated our consultation of book collections and a documentary analysis of other sources related to clowns.

Risk factors for syphilis in women: case-control study.

Objective: To determine the sociodemographic, behavioral, and health care factors related to the occurrence of syphilis in women treated at public maternity hospitals.

Methods: This is a case-control study (239 cases and 322 controls) with women admitted to seven maternity hospitals in the municipality of Recife, Brazil, from July 2013 to July 2014. Eligible women were recruited after the result of the VDRL (Venereal Disease Research Laboratory) under any titration.

Exploring the effect of non-impact and impact sports is particular relevant to understand the interaction between skeletal muscle and bone health during growth. The current study aimed to compare total and regional bone and soft-tissue composition, in parallel to measurements of blood lipid and inflammatory profiles between adolescent athletes and non-athletes. Anthropometry, biological maturity, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans, training load and lipid and inflammatory profiles were assessed in a cross-sectional sample of 53 male adolescents (20 non-athletes, 15 swimmers and 18 basketball players) aged 12-19 years.

A confirmatory analysis was performed to validate the Questionnaire on the Health Staff's Perceptions Regarding Doutores da Alegria's Intervention, a 40-item instrument designed to assess pediatric staff's perceptions regarding the effects of Doutores da Alegria, a Brazilian hospital clowning professional organization. Eight dimensions were evaluated: the permanence of Doutores da Alegria's interventions; Doutores da Alegria's intrapersonal and interpersonal effects on their relation to health staff; themselves; staff-children; and staff-family relationships; as well as their effect on staff's cultural development; children's relation to their own disease; and families' attitude regarding their child's condition. In all, 567 health professionals from 13 Brazilian hospitals participated.

Kampo herbal remedies are reported to have a wide range of indications and have attracted attention due to reports suggesting that these remedies are effective when used in disease treatment while maintaining a favourable quality of life. In a developmental center, blood lead level was determined by atomic absorption for individuals who were admitted, discharged, or had pica. In 1977, blood lead level was 0 to 29 ug/dL in 298 (92%), 30 to 49 ug/dL in 20 (6%), and 50 to 79 ug/dL in 5 (2%) of the 323 individuals screened. In contrast, in 1994, blood lead level was 0 to 4 ug/dL in 58 (88%) and 5 to 9 ug/dL in 8 (12%) of 66 individuals screened.

Occupational risk of hepatitis B from institutionalized mentally retarded HBsAg carriers: a prospective study.

Epidemiology of hepatitis B infection in institutionalized mentally retarded clients.

In 1,149 clients of an institution for the mentally retarded, the prevalences of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis B virus markers were 12 per cent and 66 per cent, respectively. HBsAg prevalence was higher in males, Down syndrome, ambulatory, and older clients, and those with longer institutionalization. Serum alanine aminotransferase levels were abnormal in 31 per cent of HBsAg positive and 10 per cent of HBsAg-negative clients.

This retrospective study was undertaken to determine the incidence of acute and chronic morbidity due to hepatitis B infection among employees of an institution for the mentally retarded. Based on a review of medical records, surveillance data, and serologic testing, we found no evidence of excess morbidity among 2,000 employees in a 10-year period. Hepatitis B vaccination is neither warranted nor presently cost-effective for most client-care personnel.
