Phthalates constitute a family of anthropogenic chemicals developed to be used in the manufacture of plastics, solvents, and personal care products. Their dispersion and accumulation in many environments can occur at all stages of their use (from synthesis to recycling). However, many phthalates together with other accumulated engineered chemicals have been shown to interfere with hormone activities.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) remains one of the leading causes of nosocomial acute pneumonia. The array of virulence factors expressed by PA and the intense immune response associated with PA pneumonia play a major role in the severity of these infections. New therapeutic approaches are needed to overcome the high resistance of PA to antibiotics and to reduce the direct damage to host tissues.

The structural addictive characteristics of gambling products are important targets for prevention, but can be unintuitive to laypeople. In the PictoGRRed (Pictograms for Gambling Risk Reduction) study, we aimed to develop pictograms that illustrate the main addictive characteristics of gambling products and to assess their impact on identifying the addictiveness of gambling products by laypeople. We conducted a three-step study: (1) use of a Delphi consensus method among 56 experts from 13 countries to reach a consensus on the 10 structural addictive characteristics of gambling products to be illustrated by pictograms and their associated definitions, (2) development of 10 pictograms and their definitions, and (3) study in the general population to assess the impact of exposure to the pictograms and their definitions (n = 900).

Phthalates are used in a variety of applications-for example, as plasticizers in polyvinylchloride products to improve their flexibility-and can be easily released into the environment. In addition to being major persistent organic environmental pollutants, some phthalates are responsible for the carcinogenicity, teratogenicity, and endocrine disruption that are notably affecting steroidogenesis in mammals. Numerous studies have thus focused on deciphering their effects on mammals and eukaryotic cells.

Background: Impairment or distress caused by gambling disorder can be subjectively assessed via quality of life. The aim of this study was to develop a new patient-reported outcome instrument to explore the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in gambling disorders, the Gambling quality-of-life scale (GQoLS), and to document its psychometric properties.

Methods: A previous qualitative study had been conducted using focus groups of problem gamblers to identify areas of HRQoL impacted by gambling.

Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has been widely recognized as a major public health issue, which can be addressed through effective AMR surveillance systems. In 2018, a national surveillance programme for AMR in the community and nursing homes called Mission PRIMO was established in France. It builds on an existing network called MedQual-Ville that had been monitoring AMR mainly in the west of France community since 2003.

Background/aims: Interleukin 33 (IL-33) plays a significant role in immunity but its role in bone physiology and periodontitis needs to be further investigated. The aim of this study was to decipher the contribution of IL-33 to bone homeostasis under physiological conditions, and to alveolar bone loss associated with experimental periodontitis (EP) in IL-33 knockout (KO) mice and their wildtype (WT) littermates.

Methods: The bone phenotype of IL-33 KO mice was studied in the maxilla, femur, and fifth lumbar vertebra by micro-computed tomography (micro-CT).

Staphylococcus aureus bone infections remain a therapeutic challenge, leading to long and expensive hospitalizations. Systemic antibiotic treatments are inconsistently effective, due to insufficient penetration into the infectious site. In an osteomyelitis model, the single local administration of nanoparticle-encapsulated daptomycin allows sterilization of the infectious sites after 4 and 14 days of treatment, while daily systemic daptomycin treatment for 4 days was not effective.

Background: Early detection in the prevention of addictive behaviors remains a complex question in practice for most first-line health care workers (HCWs). Several prevention measures have successfully included a screening stage followed by a brief intervention in case of risk-related use or referral to an addiction center for problematic use. Whereas early detection is highly recommended by the World Health Organization, it is not usually performed in practice.

Many features of Internet gambling may impact problem severity, particularly for vulnerable populations (availability, anonymity, a convenience and ease of play, digital forms of payment, and a higher level of immersion). To prevent the risks associated with excessive gambling and to inform gamblers, we need responsible gambling strategies. Gambling-related warning messages are one possible strategy that can help minimizing gambling-related harm.

Azithromycin (AZM) is a 15-membered-ring macrolide that presents a broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria and atypical microorganisms but suffers from a poor diffusion across the outer-membrane of Gram-negative bacilli, including (PA). However, AZM has demonstrated clinical benefits in patients suffering from chronic PA respiratory infections, especially cystic fibrosis patients. Since the rise of multidrug-resistant PA has led to a growing need for new therapeutic options, this macrolide has been proposed as an adjunctive therapy.

Wagering inducements are part of loyalty/reward programs implemented by online gambling operators to retain or attract consumers. They constitute incentives to bet that are offered to gamblers provided that they perform certain betting-related activities. They are often considered risk factors for gambling problems, but studies exploring the actual impacts of such incentives are scarce.
