Article Synopsis
  • A meta-analysis was conducted to examine the effectiveness of laser therapy (LT) in managing diabetic foot wound ulcers (DFWU), analyzing 1357 studies and selecting 26 with a total of 1067 patients.
  • Results showed that LT led to significantly greater reductions in ulcer size and higher complete healing rates compared to control groups, with a notable decrease in ulcer sizes (mean difference of 17.04) and nearly tripled healing rates (odds ratio of 2.88).
  • However, caution is advised in interpreting these results due to the low sample sizes of the studies included in the analysis.

Background: Spinal cord injury (SCI) favors a persistent pro-inflammatory macrophages/microglia-mediated response with only a transient appearance of anti-inflammatory phenotype of immune cells. However, the mechanisms controlling this special sterile inflammation after SCI are still not fully elucidated. It is known that damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) released from necrotic cells after injury can trigger severe inflammation.

Background: There are two types of esophageal varices (EVs): high-risk EVs (HEVs) and low-risk EVs, and HEVs pose a greater threat to patient life than low-risk EVs. The diagnosis of EVs is mainly conducted by gastroscopy, which can cause discomfort to patients, or by non-invasive prediction models. A number of non-invasive models for predicting EVs have been reported; however, those that are based on the formula for calculation of liver and spleen volume in HEVs have not been reported.

Background: To study the effect of microRNA-383 (miR-383) on cell proliferation, migration, and invasion of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells, and explore its mechanism.

Methods: The expressions of miR-383 and plant homology domain that refers to protein 8 (PHF8) were detected in tissues and cells by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) or western blot respectively. The miR-383 group (transfected miR-383 mimics), miR-con group (transfected miR-con), si-con group (transfected si-con), si-PHF8 group (transfected si-PHF8), miR-383 + ctrl group (cotransfected miR-383 mimics and pcDNA-3.

Article Synopsis
  • Isoquercitrin is a natural compound that has important biological activities and is produced from rutin using the enzyme hesperidinase, but the process is usually slow and inefficient.
  • A new biphase system was created using specific solvents that significantly improved the conversion of rutin to isoquercitrin, achieving 99.5% conversion and 93.9% yield within just 3 hours.
  • The biphase system not only accelerates the reaction and allows for higher substrate concentration but also maintains a mild, environmentally friendly process, making it reusable for future applications.

The potential effects of electro-chemical conditioning on sludge dewatering treatments and its mechanism were investigated in this study. Capillary suction time (CST) and specific resistance to filtration (SRF) were used to evaluate sludge dewaterability. Extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) content and sludge disintegration degree (DD(SCOD)) were also determined in an attempt to explain the observed changes in sludge dewaterability.
