In this paper, the distribution, degree of pollution and sources of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cr, As, Co, Ni and Hg in the surface sediment of Sanmen Bay were studied. The average concentrations of the identified potentially toxic elements (PTEs) were in the following order: Zn > Ni > Cr > Cu > Pb > Co > As>Cd > Hg. Almost all PTEs had a significant positive correlation with TOC, clay and Al; Cr had no significant correlations.

Background: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, two new temporary hospitals were constructed in record time in Wuhan, China, to help combat the fast-spreading virus in February 2020. Given the great importance of Yundang lagoon (China), a detailed evaluation and source identification of multiple potentially toxic elements (PTEs) is required. Irisin, a novel hormone like polypeptide, is cleaved and secreted by an unknown protease from a membrane-spanning protein, FNDC5 (fibronectin type III domain-containing protein 5). The current knowledge on the biological functions of irisin includes browning white adipose tissue, regulating insulin use, and anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties. Dysfunction of irisin has shown to be involved in cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, and myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Inspired by natural redwood and bone, a biomimetic strategy is presented to develop a highly bioactive redwood-like nanocomposite via radial freeze casting of biocompatible hydrogels followed by the in situ coprecipitation of a Si-containing CaP hybrid nanocoating (SCPN). The engineered material displays radially aligned macrochannels and a porous network structure similar to those of natural redwood. In addition to acting as a mechanical reinforcement, introducing SCPNs into the weak redwood-like scaffold yields not only a nanoroughened surface topography, a low swelling ratio, retarded enzymatic degradation, and enhanced protein absorption abilities but also the sustained sequential release of Si and Ca ions, thereby providing essential biophysical and biochemical cues for effective bone regeneration.
