Urban rail transit, as an efficient and eco-friendly mode of transportation, plays a pivotal role in mitigating traffic congestion and lowering urban carbon emissions. Despite the significant contributions by scholars in this area, debates surrounding the quantification of carbon emissions during the operational phase of urban rail transit persist, particularly in assessing its impact on reducing ground traffic congestion. This study examines the passenger flow during Beijing's morning and evening peak hours, assuming that all passengers initially using urban rail transit switch to buses and taxis during these periods.

The present study was to explore relationship between serum lipid profiles and the polymorphism of rs324420 at fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) gene ( rs324420) and its confounders in Chinese adolescents. Serum lipids, glucose, and insulin levels were assessed using routine methods in a cohort of 708 high school students. Dietary intake was investigated by 3-day diet records, and intakes of protein, fat, and carbohydrate were calculated.

A new blood-brain barrier (BBB) in vitro model of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) was successfully established by co-culture with brain microvascular endothelial cell line TVEC-01 and brain astrocyte cell line TA-02 of tilapia. Experiments with the expression levels of BBB-related genes, TEER value detection and 4-h water-leaking test have shown that the BBB in vitro model has an excellent barrier effect. In bacterial penetration experiments, the pathogenic strain of Streptococcus agalactiae was able to pass through the BBB in vitro model and initiate a series of immune responses, among which TA-02 contributed to the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and TVEC-01 contributed to the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines, providing an excellent research tool and theoretical basis for further study of meningitis.

Berberine hydrochloride (BH) extracted from Coptis chinensis (CC) and Matrine (MT) separated from Sophora flavescens (SF) are alkaloids with potent anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor effects. Motivated by the clinical practice of using CC and SF together, we aimed to demonstrate that the synergistic application of the natural compounds BH and MT could enhance therapeutic effects and minimize side effects. Two types of liposomes, liposomes containing only BH (BH-LP) and liposomes containing both BH and MT (BH-MT-LP), were successfully prepared via the reverse evaporation method.

Article Synopsis
  • This study analyzed the effectiveness and safety of three treatments for acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF): plasma exchange (PE), plasma perfusion combined with PE (PP+PE), and dual-plasma molecular adsorption system combined with PE (DPMAS+PE).
  • Results showed all three methods improved liver and kidney function, but DPMAS+PE had the highest efficacy, reducing 90-day mortality rates significantly compared to the others.
  • Adverse reactions were also lower in the DPMAS+PE group, making it the most favorable option for treating ACLF in clinical settings.

  • This study explored how the severity of depressive symptoms in college students influences the connections between anhedonia (loss of pleasure), smartphone addiction, and other factors.
  • A survey of 1,347 Chinese college students categorized them into two groups: those with depressive symptoms (DS) and those without (NDS).
  • Results showed that the DS group had tighter symptom connections, with social anhedonia being crucial for them, while smartphone addiction's withdrawal/escape factor was significant for the NDS group, indicating different intervention needs for managing depression and related behaviors.

  • - The study investigates the link between indoor air pollution from cooking with solid fuels and the risk of "possible sarcopenia" in middle-aged and older Chinese individuals, using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study.
  • - Out of 17,708 participants tracked over 4 years, 1,532 developed possible sarcopenia, with those using solid fuels at a significantly higher risk compared to those using clean fuels.
  • - The results highlight that solid fuel use is a modifiable risk factor for sarcopenia, particularly impacting middle-aged women, suggesting that improving cooking fuel types could serve as a prevention strategy.

  • Nile tilapia's tolerance to hypoxia and temperature extremes negatively affects their growth and survival rates, raising economic concerns.
  • A 42-day feeding trial tested the effects of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens AV5 on tilapia, revealing that it improved blood parameters and antioxidant levels compared to a control diet.
  • The results suggest that adding B. amyloliquefaciens AV5 helps mitigate stress-related responses in tilapia, making it a potential preventive measure against environmental challenges.

Cyclic AMP (cAMP) and cAMP receptor protein (CRP) system controls catabolic enzyme expression based on metabolite concentrations in bacteria. Hemolysin co-regulatory protein (Hcp) is well known as a molecular chaperone for virulence factor secretion of the type VI secretion system (T6SS). However, the intracellular role of Hcp involving in bacterial physiological processes remains unknown.

We conducted network meta-analysis to assess cardiovascular toxicity of anaplastic lymphoma kinase-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (-TKIs). Eleven articles involving 2855 patients and six interventions including crizotinib, alectinib, ceritinib, lorlatinib, brigatinib and chemotherapy were analyzed. No significant difference was observed in overall cardiovascular risk among -TKIs.

The aquaculture sector predicts protein-rich meals by 2040 and has experienced significant economic shifts since 2000. However, challenges emanating from disease control measures, brood stock improvement, feed advancements, hatchery technology, and water quality management due to environmental fluctuations have been taken as major causative agents for hindering the sector's growth. For the past years, aquatic disease prevention and control have principally depended on the use of various antibiotics, ecologically integrated control, other immunoprophylaxis mechanisms, and chemical drugs, but the long-term use of chemicals such as antibiotics not only escalates antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genes but also harms the fish and the environments, resulting in drug residues in aquatic products, severely obstructing the growth of the aquaculture sector.

  • Culters are important fish found in rivers and lakes in China, and researchers wanted to learn more about a type of tiny creature called Myxozoa that lives in them.
  • They found a new Myxozoan species only in the gills of one specific Culters fish and not in any other fish or body parts.
  • This new species looks different from other known types, and tests showed it’s unlike anything that has been identified before, leading scientists to name it as a new species.

  • A study looked at how the thalamus, a part of the brain, works with other parts in people with early-onset schizophrenia compared to healthy individuals.
  • They found that people with this type of schizophrenia had weak connections between the thalamus and several brain networks, while having stronger connections with other areas related to emotions.
  • The research suggested that these different connections in the brain could help doctors understand and treat early-onset schizophrenia better.

  • This study investigated how genetic variations in the ACE and AGTR1 genes affect lipid profiles in people with diabetes, particularly focusing on a group of 385 Chinese participants with an average age of 75.
  • The researchers used specific methods to identify genetic polymorphisms and measured various lipid levels, finding that ACE I/D variations were significant predictors of certain lipid ratios, especially in females.
  • The findings suggest that gender may play a crucial role in the relationship between these genetic markers and lipid profile changes in individuals with diabetes, which could explain the inconsistencies observed in lipid levels among diabetic patients.

As an alternative to the criticized antibiotics, probiotics have been adopted for their eco-friendly nature and ability to enhance host growth and immunity. Nevertheless, reports suggest ineffectiveness in commercially available probiotics since most are from non-fish sources; thus, this study was envisaged to isolate and characterize new Bacillus spp. from the gut of hybrid grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus♀ × Epinephelus lanceolatus♂) which could serve as potential probiotics.
