To report the cosmetic, clinical, and visual outcomes of a combined surgical approach for treating a corneal/limbal dermoid using excision and a three-layered amniotic membrane graft with fibrin glue. An 18-year-old female presented with impaired vision and ocular discomfort caused by a prominent dome-shaped limbal congenital dermoid on the inferotemporal cornea, resulting in a significant aesthetic concern. A full assessment, including refraction, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), corneal topography, aberrometry and anterior segment OCT (AS-OCT) was conducted to plan the surgical approach.

Purpose: To evaluate and compare the mycobacterial load using a mobile laminar airflow (LAF) device in an IVI-dedicated outpatient clean room (OCR) without ventilation systems and in a hospital-based operating theatre (HOT).

Methods: This case-control study was conducted in 2 different settings: OCR and HOT during a series of intravitreal injections (IVIs). The Air Microbial analysis was performed using a Surface Air System instrument at three different moments during the IVI sessions in both settings: at the operative site (OS), four meters from the OS (DOS) and in the disinfection room (DR).

Purpose: To describe two patients affected by optic disk pit-maculopathy ODP-M surgically treated with pars-plana vitrectomy (PPV) and the apposition of a human Amniotic Membrane (hAM) patch.

Methods: Patients underwent a PPV with the apposition of a hAM patch to cover the ODP. In case 1, a 2 surgery was necessary to push the hAM patch inside the pit, whereas in case 2 the patch was pulled inside the pit following the pressure gradient when infusion was turned on.

Objectives: We aimed to investigate choroidal involvement and the degree of anterior chamber inflammation in a cohort of patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) without clinical signs of active uveitis and to compare it with healthy controls (HC).

Methods: Enhanced-depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) scans of 21 patients diagnosed with JIA and 22 HC of equal age were acquired. Images were binarised to measure subfoveal choroidal thickness (SCT), nasal choroidal thickness (NCT), temporal choroidal thickness (TCT), total choroidal area (TCA), luminal area (LA), stromal area (SA) and choroidal vascular index (CVI).

Introduction: Despite an improved understanding of its pathogenesis, dry eye disease (DED) remains relatively underestimated and its treatment challenging. A better alignment between the clinical evaluation and the patient self-assessment also requires capturing the whole patient experience of DED. This project aimed to unveil this experience through narrative medicine (NM).

Background: Fluorescein angiography (FA) has been a pivotal tool for studying the pathophysiology of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in vivo. We examined the course of ROP using FA to assess the predictive value of angiographic features.

Methods: This is an observational retrospective cohort study of eyes screened for ROP with a binocular indirect ophthalmoscope and FA.

Purpose: The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety profile of PreserFlo MicroShunt implantation in the medium- to long-term follow-up of patients with open-angle glaucoma. The secondary objective is to analyze laser flare meter (LFM) values before and after PreserFlo MicroShunt implantation.

Methods: This prospective, observational, longitudinal single-center study included a total of 62 eyes from 54 patients.

Purpose: To describe the outcomes of five Salzmann's Nodular Degeneration (SND) cases treated with a combination of alcohol delamination, superficial keratectomy and amniotic membrane patch with fibrin glue.

Methods: Five patients affected by SND with significant discomfort and decreased visual acuity were evaluated with refraction, best corrected visual acuity, Break-up time test, corneal topography, Anterior Segment of Optical Coherence Tomography and images of anterior segment with a full slit lamp examination. All the patients underwent alcohol delamination of the corneal epithelium followed by superficial keratectomy to remove the subepithelial nodules.

Purpose: To report the emergence and progress of four late-stage characteristics: incomplete retinal pigment epithelium and outer retinal atrophy (iRORA) and complete RPE and outer retinal atrophy (cRORA), drusen ooze and drusen collapse in eyes with dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) using Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT).

Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of eyes with non-exudative AMD. Multimodal imaging was done at follow up visits ≤ 12 months.

Hydroquinone, a potent toxic agent of cigarette smoke, damages retinal pigmented epithelial cells by triggering oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction, two events causally related to the development and progression of retinal diseases. The inner mitochondrial membrane is enriched in cardiolipin, a phospholipid susceptible of oxidative modifications which determine cell-fate decision. Using ARPE-19 cell line as a model of retinal pigmented epithelium, we analyzed the potential involvement of cardiolipin in hydroquinone toxicity.

Circumscribed choroidal hemangioma is a rare vascular hamartoma of the choroid, presenting as a red-orange mass at the posterior pole on fundoscopic examination. Despite its benign origin, associated complications such as subretinal fluid, serous retinal detachment, retinoschisis and neovascular glaucoma may lead to serious visual impairment in more than half patients. Because of its similarity to amelanotic choroidal melanoma and choroidal metastasis, differential diagnosis is still challenging for specialists.

Purpose: The aim of our study is to confirm the utility of warm compresses (WC) and artificial tears (AT) in meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) management and to understand if its association with topical cyclosporine A (CsA) improves outcomes.

Methods: Patients with diagnosis of MGD-related dry eye were evaluated. In this prospective, randomized, double-masked study, patients were randomized in two treatments: AT plus WC (group A), and AT plus WC plus CsA 0.

Article Synopsis
  • Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most common rheumatic disease in children, with uveitis being the leading extra-articular issue that can cause vision problems.
  • JIA-associated uveitis (JIA-U) poses significant challenges for pediatricians and ophthalmologists due to its subtle onset and the risk of serious complications affecting vision.
  • Current treatments begin with topical glucocorticoids, followed by methotrexate and newer biological drugs that specifically target disease mechanisms, greatly improving outcomes for those who do not respond to traditional therapies.

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) affects premature newborns, and it can cause childhood blindness and visual impairment if untreated. The understanding of the pathogenetic role of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) has led to development of therapeutic strategies such as intravitreal anti-VEGF drugs. We reported drug efficacy and ROP recurrence rates, extrapolated from the reviewed studies.

Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is the second most common retinal vascular disorder, after diabetic retinopathy. Most patients suffering RVO develop some degree of visual loss consequent to retinal complications such as edema and microhemorrhages. Even if some risk factors for RVO have been identified, the clinical outcome of RVO remains highly unpredictable because studies investigating potential prognostic markers for visual improvement are lacking.

Purpose: To report the individual retinal layer thicknesses up to mid-equator in patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR) using Spectralis (Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany) wide-field optical coherence tomography (OCT).

Methods: Retinal layers were segmented using a custom designed semi-automated algorithm, where reference points were marked by the examiner to enable software to automatically compute the thickness values of each retinal sublayer at an interval of 1 mm from reference points. The values of individual retinal thicknesses in eyes with varying severity of DR were compared with the values of healthy subjects.
