Cognitive impairments appear at or before motor signs in about one third of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and have a cumulative prevalence of roughly 80% overall. These deficits exact an unrelenting toll on patients' quality and activities of daily life due in part to a lack of available treatments to ameliorate them. This study used three well-validated novel object recognition-based paradigms to explore the suitability of rats with knockout of the PTEN-induced putative kinase1 gene () for investigating factors that induce cognitive decline in PD and for testing new ways to mitigate them.

Introduction: Neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) have been recognized as surrogates of protection against SARS-CoV-2; however, the emergence of variants/subvariants escaping neutralization suggests that laboratory assessments of NAbs against the ancestral/wild type (WT) antigens likely overestimate the degree of protection.

Methods: A novel flow cytometry-based multiplex test system was developed for the simultaneous detection of NAbs of multiple SARS-CoV-2 variants. SARS-CoV-2 antibodies (Abs) including IgG, IgM, IgA isotypes were measured in the same system.

Compelling evidence continues to build to support the idea that SARS-CoV-2 Neutralizing Antibody (NAb) levels in an individual can serve as an important indicator of the strength of protective immunity against infection. It is not well understood why NAb levels in some individuals remain high over time, while in others levels decline rapidly. In this work, we present a two-state mathematical model of within-host NAb dynamics in response to vaccination.

The potential for preventive medicine to lead to more equitable health outcomes exists with the inclusion of genetic testing in medicine. Because of the medical implications of genetic testing for hereditary cancer syndromes and the financial cost attached to recommended management, ensuring equitable access to cancer screening and prevention must be made a priority. For patients with Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer (HBOC) syndrome, the benefits of early detection and prevention are clear, significant, and create the opportunity to provide more equitable, personalized, preventive healthcare.

Background & Aims: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the hepatic correlate of the metabolic syndrome, is a major risk factor for hepatobiliary cancer (HBC). Although chronic inflammation is thought to be the root cause of all these diseases, the mechanism whereby it promotes HBC in NAFLD remains poorly understood. Herein, we aim to evaluate the hypothesis that inflammation-related dysregulation of the ESRP2-NF2-YAP/TAZ axis promotes HB carcinogenesis.

Insulin resistance and hepatic lipid accumulation constitute the metabolic underpinning of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). We tested the hypothesis that saroglitazar, a PPAR α/γ agonist would improve NASH in the diet-induced animal model of NAFLD. Mice received chow diet and normal water (CDNW) or high fat western diet and ad lib sugar water (WDSW).

There is a need for continued drug development for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Bergamot is a plant whose fruit juice is enriched with flavonoids and phenolic compounds which improves dyslipidemia and markers of systemic inflammation in patients with Metabolic Syndrome. The aim of this study was to perform a preclinical "proof of concept" study of Bergamot polyphenolic formulation (BPF99) for the treatment of NASH.

Objective: Serum α-hydroxybutyrate (α-HB) is elevated in insulin resistance and diabetes. We tested the hypothesis that the α-HB level predicts abnormal 1 h glucose levels and β-cell dysfunction inferred from plasma insulin kinetics during a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).

Research Design And Methods: This cross-sectional study included 217 patients at increased risk for diabetes.

The occurrence of multiple primary sarcomas in one individual is very uncommon and the development of osteosarcoma as a second tumor following a soft tissue sarcoma is extremely rare. We report a case of a 62-year-old man who developed 2 histologically distinct sarcomas: a soft tissue myxofibrosarcoma and vertebral osteosarcoma. This unusual case highlights the critical role of careful histopathological evaluation in distinguishing synchronous or metachronous neoplasia from metastatic tumor.

Surface Enhanced Laser/Desorption Ionization-time of flight (SELDI-TOF) mass spectrometry is a technique uniquely suited to the study of the urine proteome due to its salt tolerance, high-throughput, and small sample requirements. However, due to the extreme sensitivity of the technique, sample collection and storage conditions, as well as instrument protocols and analysis conditions, must be rigorously controlled to ensure that data generated and collected is accurate and free from artifacts. Robust and reproducible data sets can be generated and compared between clinical sites when experimental protocols are carefully standardized.

The purposes of this study were to evaluate the effect of integrating cultural content (ICC) in an undergraduate nursing curriculum on students' self-perceived cultural competence, and to determine whether a 5-week clinical immersion in international nursing (ICC Plus) had any additional effect on students' self-perceived cultural competence. Cultural competence was measured using a 28-item scale regarding students' self-perceived knowledge, self-awareness, and comfort with skills of cultural competence. Pretest scores from admission into the program were matched with posttest scores obtained just prior to graduation for 32 students, 7 of whom also participated in a 5-week immersion experience in Guatemala.

Article Synopsis
  • CD8 T lymphocytes from some immunologically stable HIV-1-infected individuals produce a soluble factor called CAF that suppresses HIV-1 replication, but its identity was unknown until recently.
  • Using protein-chip technology, researchers identified alpha-defensin proteins (1, 2, and 3) as the key components of CAF in long-term nonprogressors with HIV-1.
  • The study found that alpha-defensins could neutralize CAF's activity against HIV-1, indicating their significant role in inhibiting HIV-1 replication beyond other factors like beta-chemokines.

Previously, we reported that Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells transfected with murine mouse major histocompatibility complex class II genes, exhibit a unique antigen (Ag) processing defect whereby these cells are impaired in processing only Ag with disulfide bonds. Here, we examined various aspects of the intracellular reducing environment in the CHO cells to understand the underlying mechanism causing the defect. A cell hybrid generated by the fusion of CHO cells and L cell fibroblasts was used for comparison due to their competency in processing Ag.
