Objective: This work aims to compare two mindset types (fixed and growth) and assess levels of quality of life in individuals with scoliosis.

Methods: Two questionnaires, Scoliosis Research Society-30 (SRS-30) and Early-Onset Scoliosis-24 Questionnaire (EOSQ-24), associated with the "Health Mindset Scale," were used.

Unexpectedly, various polymorphisms in KALRN gene were previously associated with resistance to bacterial infections in ruminants. In this study, we evaluated the effect of the rs384223075 (RS-075) deletion in KALRN intron 5 on the occurrence of Mycobacterium bovis and Brucella abortus infections in cattle.

Historical Biogeography of the Group (Anura, Leptodactylidae): Identification of Ancestral Areas and Events that Modeled their Distribution.

The objective of the present study was to reconstruct the biogeographic history of the monophyletic group . We carried out two complementary historical biogeographic approaches: one estimates the ancestral areas with the statistical dispersion and vicariance method (S-DIVA). The other detects disjoint distributions among sister groups, which provides information about barriers that separate populations through a spatial analysis of vicariance (VIP method).

Oral administration of TiO nanoparticles during early life impacts cardiac and neurobehavioral performance and metabolite profile in an age- and sex-related manner.

Background: Nanoparticles (NPs) are increasingly incorporated in everyday products. To investigate the effects of early life exposure to orally ingested TiO NP, male and female Sprague-Dawley rat pups received four consecutive daily doses of 10 mg/kg body weight TiO NP (diameter: 21 ± 5 nm) or vehicle control (water) by gavage at three different pre-weaning ages: postnatal day (PND) 2-5, PND 7-10, or PND 17-20. Cardiac assessment and basic neurobehavioral tests (locomotor activity, rotarod, and acoustic startle) were conducted on PND 20.

Diversity of the BoLA-DRB3 gene in cattle breeds from tropical and subtropical regions of Argentina.

Bovine leukocyte antigens (BoLA) have been widely studied because of their primary function in the recognition of pathogens by the immune system. To date, however, the characterization of the BoLA-DRB3 gene in Latin American Zebu and mixed zebuine breeds is scarce. By a sequence-based typing method, here we sequenced exon 2 of BoLA class II DRB3 gene in 264 animals from the five most commonly used breeds in northern Argentina (Creole, Brahman, Braford, Brangus, and Nellore).

[Surveillance of rare diseases in Spain: Spanish Registry of Rare Diseases (ReeR).].

Traditionally, epidemiological surveillance has focused on infectious diseases, but the concept of Public Health surveillance, introduced in Spain with the Law 33/2011, is broader and includes chronic diseases. Health strategies for these diseases need epidemiological information to improve understanding of socio-health needs and to facilitate the efficient management of resources. The European Union defines rare diseases (RD) as those that, being life-threatening or chronically debilitating, have a prevalence of less than 5 cases per 10,000 inhabitants.

Expression-based analysis of genes related to single nucleotide polymorphism hits associated with bovine leukemia virus proviral load in Argentinean dairy cattle.

In dairy cattle infected with bovine leukemia virus (BLV), the proviral load (PVL) level is directly related to the viral transmission from infected animals to their healthy herdmates. Two contrasting phenotypic groups can be identified when assessing PVL in peripheral blood of infected cows. A large number of reports point to bovine genetic variants (single nucleotide polymorphisms) as one of the key determinants underlying PVL level.

Association of TNF rs668920841 and INRA111 polymorphisms with caprine brucellosis: A case-control study of candidate genes involved in innate immunity.

Caprine brucellosis is an infectious, contagious zoonotic disease caused by Brucella melitensis. Multiple factors, including host genetics, can influence the outcome of the exposure to Brucella; and it is expected that genetic variants that affect the host innate immune response could have a key role in Brucella infection and pathogenesis. In this study, we evaluated if polymorphisms in innate immunity-related genes are associated with results of Brucella infection in goats.

Generalized glycogenosis in Brahman-derived breeds: diagnosis and prevalence in Argentina.

Generalized glycogenosis is a lethal autosomal recessive disease caused by a deficient activity of the acidic 1,4-α-glucosidase enzyme and characterized by an accumulation of glycogen within lysosomes. Three mutations in the GAA gene causing bovine generalized glycogenosis have been identified in two cattle breeds, Brahman and Shorthorn. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of carriers of the E7 mutation in the GAA gene in Argentinean Brahman-derived herds.

Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infections, causing persistent lymphocytosis and lethal lymphosarcoma in cattle, have reached high endemicity on dairy farms. We observed extensive inter-individual variation in the level of infection (LI) by assessing differences in proviral load in peripheral blood. This phenotypic variation appears to be determined by host genetics variants, especially those located in the BoLA-DRB3 MHCII molecule.

Polymorphisms at the 3' untranslated region of SLC11A1 gene are associated with protection to Brucella infection in goats.

Goats are susceptible to brucellosis and the detection of Brucella-infected animals is carried out by serological tests. In other ruminant species, polymorphisms in microsatellites (Ms) of 3' untranslated region (3'UTR) of the solute carrier family 11 member A1 (SLC11A1) gene were associated with resistance to Brucella abortus infection. Goats present two polymorphic Ms at the 3'UTR end of SLC11A1 gene, called regions A and B.

Learning curve in the application of a hydrogel spacer to protect the rectal wall during radiotherapy of localized prostate cancer.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of increasing experience on hydrogel dimensions, rectal dose, and acute toxicity, and to discuss important technical issues gained from this experience.

Methods: Sixty-four consecutive patients with prostate cancer were included in this analysis (G1/G2 corresponding to first/second 32 patients) after injection of 10 mL spacer gel. All patients were treated with a 5-field intensity-modulated radiotherapy technique to 76-78 Gy.

Spacer stability and prostate position variability during radiotherapy for prostate cancer applying a hydrogel to protect the rectal wall.

Background And Purpose: The aim was to evaluate the spacer dimensions and prostate position variability during the course of radiotherapy for prostate cancer.

Materials And Methods: CT scans were performed in a group of 15 patients (G1) after the 10 ml injection of a hydrogel spacer (SpaceOAR™) and 30 patients without a spacer (G2) before the beginning of treatment (CT1) and in the last treatment week, 10-12 weeks following spacer implantation (CT2). Spacer dimensions and displacements were determined and prostate displacements compared.

Genetic analysis of the 3' untranslated region of the bovine SLC11A1 gene reveals novel polymorphisms.

Polymorphisms in microsatellites at the 3' untranslated region (3'UTR) of the SLC11A1 (solute carrier family 11 member A1) gene have been associated with natural resistance to Brucella abortus and Mycobacterium bovis infection in livestock species. Here, we carried out an individual genetic analysis of the two microsatellites present at the 3'UTR SLC11A1 gene in 254 Bos taurus purebred, 125 B. indicus purebred and 54 B.

Quality of life after intensity-modulated radiotherapy for prostate cancer with a hydrogel spacer. Matched-pair analysis.

Background: Hydrogel spacer is an innovative method to protect the rectal wall during prostate cancer radiotherapy. Clinical effects are not well known.

Methods: Patients have been surveyed before, at the last day, and 2-3 months after radiotherapy using a validated questionnaire (Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite).

THORACOLUMBAR BURST FRACTURE: CORRELATION BETWEEN KYPHOSIS AND FUNCTION AFTER SURGICAL TREATMENT.

Objective: To assess the correlation between post-traumatic kyphosis in patients with thoracolumbar burst fractures undergoing surgical treatment and the functional result from treatment.

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 27 patients with thoracolumbar burst fractures according to Denis and A3 to Margerl's classification who met the inclusion criteria for this sample and underwent surgical treatment with a minimum follow-up of six months. The patients' mean age was 46.

Can the interpedicular distance reliably assess the severity of thoracolumbar burst fractures?

Study Design: Retrospective analysis of 260 patients with acute spine fractures treated at a tertiary trauma center from 1989 to 2009.
