In most natural groundwaters, sulfide concentrations are low, and little attention has been paid to potential occurrence of thioarsenates (AsS O with n = 1-4). Thioarsenate occurrence in groundwater could be critical with regard to the efficiency of iron (Fe)-based treatment technologies because previous studies reported less sorption of thioarsenates to preformed Fe-minerals compared to arsenite and arsenate. We analyzed 273 groundwater samples taken from different wells in Bangladesh over 1 year and detected monothioarsenate (MTA), likely formed via solid-phase zero-valent sulfur, in almost 50% of all samples.

Non-invasive loco-regional electro-hyperthermia (EHT) plus alkylating chemotherapy is occasionally used as salvage treatment in the relapse of patients with high-grade gliomas. Experimental data and retrospective studies suggest potential effects. However, no prospective clinical results are available.

Background: Approximately 5% of patients with malignant glioma achieve complete response (CR) after first-line combined modality treatment. Although these patients will invariably suffer from tumor recurrence, they usually do not receive any further treatment to maintain remission. According to in vitro and in vivo clinical studies, 13-cis retinoic acid (cRA) may be a promising agent for maintenance therapy in these patients.

Background: Doxorubicin exhibits high efficacy in malignant glioma cell cultures. Nonetheless, as a standard formulation, doxorubicin has not been used clinically, due to poor penetration of the blood-brain barrier. Furthermore, doxorubicin is known to induce tumor resistance genes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on glioblastoma patients and assessed the effectiveness of aggressive second-line treatments during disease recurrence, aiming to enhance survival rates and quality of life.
  • Results showed that patients receiving specific reintervention strategies had significantly better median overall survival and progression-free survival rates compared to both the overall patient cohort and standard treatment groups.
  • The findings suggest that reintervention approaches, such as additional surgeries and targeted therapies, can improve outcomes for recurrent glioblastoma patients and enhance their quality of life.

Background: Resistance to chemotherapeutic agents and poor blood-brain barrier penetration are major limitations in the treatment of malignant glioma. To improve drug delivery across the blood-brain barrier, the authors used doxorubicin as liposomal encapsulated formulation (Caelyx, Scheringh-Plough, Munich, Germany) in therapy of recurrent malignant glioma.

Methods: Fifteen patients with recurrent high-grade gliomas were included in the study.

Transforming growth factors-beta 1 and -beta 2 (TGF-beta 1 and -beta 2) are important growth-regulatory proteins for astroglial neoplasms. We analyzed their role in tumor-cell proliferation in 12 glioma cell lines, employing phosphorothioate antisense oligodeoxynucleotides (S-ODNs, 14 mer), specifically targeted against the coding sequences of TGF-beta 1-mRNA and TGF-beta 2-mRNA. TGF-beta 1-S-ODNs inhibited cell proliferation in 5 of 12 gliomas, whereas TGF-beta 2-S-ODNs reduced the cell proliferation in all glioma cell lines, compared to nonsense-S-ODN-treated and S-ODN-untreated cells as controls.
