Continental deformation is known to be controlled by the interplay between tectonic and gravitational forces modulated by thermal relaxation-controlled lithospheric strength leading to oscillations around an equilibrium state, or to runaway extension. Using data-driven thermomechanical modelling of the Alpine Himalayan Collision Zone, we demonstrate how deviations from an equilibrium between mantle dynamics, plate-boundary forces, and the thermochemical configuration of the lithosphere control continental deformation. We quantify such balance between the internal energy of the plate and tectonic forces in terms of a critical crustal thickness, that match the global average of present-day continental crust.

In this chapter, a new approach to the selective modification of native proteins is discussed, using electrophilic covalent aptamers. These biochemical tools are generated through the site-specific incorporation of a label-transferring or crosslinking electrophile into a DNA aptamer. Covalent aptamers provide the ability to transfer a variety of functional handles to a protein of interest or to irreversibly crosslink to the target.

The effect of normal stress variations on fault frictional strength has been extensively characterized in laboratory experiments and modelling studies based on a rate-and-state-dependent fault friction formalism. However, the role of pore pressure changes during injection-induced fault reactivation and associated frictional phenomena is still not well understood. We apply rate-and-state friction (RSF) theory in finite element models to investigate the effect of fluid pressurization rate on fault (re)activation and on the resulting frictional slip characteristics at the laboratory scale.

Quantitative predictions of the physical state of the Earth's subsurface are routinely based on numerical solutions of complex coupled partial differential equations together with estimates of the uncertainties in the material parameters. The resulting high-dimensional problems are computationally prohibitive even for state-of-the-art solver solutions. In this study, we introduce a hybrid physics-based machine learning technique, the non-intrusive reduced basis method, to construct reliable, scalable, and interpretable surrogate models.

In order to avoid SARS-CoV-2 transmission inside educational buildings and promote the safe reopening of schools, the Italian Government, in line with the other European countries and in accordance with the WHO recommendations, adopted a contingency plan including actions able to guarantee adequate air ventilation in classrooms. Therefore, in this pilot study, a surveillance activity based on the real-time monitoring of CO levels as a proxy of SARS-CoV-2 transmission risk, was conducted inside 9 schools (11 classrooms) located in Apulia Region (South of Italy) during the reopening of schools after the lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic. More specifically, monitoring activities and data treatment were conducted to evaluate the initial scenario inside the classrooms (first stage of evaluation) and the potential improvements obtained by applying a detailed operating protocol of air ventilation based on specific actions and the simultaneous real time visualization of CO levels by non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) sensors (second stage of evaluation).

Controlling unmodified serotonin levels in brain synapses is a primary objective when treating major depressive disorder-a disease that afflicts ∼20% of the world's population. Roughly 60% of patients respond poorly to first-line treatments and thus new therapeutic strategies are sought. To this end, we have constructed isoform-specific inhibitors of the human cytosolic sulfotransferase 1A3 (SULT1A3)-the isoform responsible for sulfonating ∼80% of the serotonin in the extracellular brain fluid.

Methods: We analysed data from 52 interviews and five focus groups involving 82 CM/ID specialists selected from university, research or community hospitals in five countries, one each in Northern, Western, Eastern, Southeastern and Southwestern Europe. The 80 hours of recordings were transcribed, and the anonymous database coding process was cross-checked iteratively by six researchers.

Venezuelan equine encephalitis viruses (VEEV) are responsible for human diseases in the Americas, producing severe or mild illness with symptoms indistinguishable from dengue and other arboviral diseases. For this reason, many cases remain without certain diagnosis. Brucellosis has been reported mainly among pregnant women, and it may lead to spontaneous abortion, intrauterine fetal death, or delivery of an infected neonate. Transmission through breast milk has also been described, but congenital cases are not commonly reported. Objective: In 2009, in a European survey, around a quarter of Europeans reported witnessing discrimination or harassment at their workplace. The parity committee from the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) designed a questionnaire survey to investigate forms of discrimination with respect to country, gender and ethnicity among medical professionals in hospitals and universities carrying out activities in the clinical microbiology (CM) and infectious diseases (ID) fields.

Design: The survey consisted of 61 questions divided into five areas (sociodemographic, professional census and environment, leadership and generic) and ran anonymously for nearly 3 months on the ESCMID website.

P-Glycoprotein (Pgp) inhibition by three sets of four isomers of N,N-bis(cyclohexanol)amine aryl esters was assessed on rhodamine 123 (R123) efflux in human MDR1-gene transfected mouse T-lymphoma L5178 cells and on Sf9 ATPase activity. The most active compounds inhibited Pgp with IC(50) values much lower than those of either cyclosporin A (CSA) or GF120918. As to R123 efflux inhibition, the role of the bond present in the second aryl moiety appeared important since the triple bond derivatives (3a-d) were the most powerful as compared to the double bond (2a-d) and the single bond (1a-d) counterparts.

This article provides details on a report that reviews and discusses information systems reporting on the quality or performance of providers of healthcare ("quality information systems") in seven countries: Denmark, England, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United States. Data collection involves a review of the published and grey literature and is complemented by information provided by key informants in the selected countries using a detailed questionnaire. Quality information systems typically address a number of audiences, including patients (or respectively the general public before receiving services and becoming patients), commissioners, purchasers and regulators.

We report a large case series of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) in Argentina that was confirmed by laboratory results from 1995 through 2008. The geographic and temporal distribution of cases by age, sex, fatality rate, and risk factors for HPS was analyzed. A total of 710 cases were unequally distributed among 4 of the 5 Argentine regions.
