In this communication is presented the finding of the tapeworm Diphyllobothrium pacificum, parasite of sea lions, in Canis familiaris (dog) in Chincha city, Peru. This is the first canine infection with D. pacificum in the South Peruvian coast.

The interaction between pollinator size and the bristle staminode of Penstemon digitalis (Scrophulariaceae).

Penstemon digitalis, a prairie species whose flowers possess a large bristle staminode, is visited by eight bee species of varying size. Two sets of field experiments involving staminode removal were performed to test pollination efficiency in relation to bee size. Our data indicate that bristle staminode presence and function are influenced by size-dependent selection on bee body size and associated pollen transporting attributes.

Anti-idiotypic vaccination in the treatment of low-grade B-cell lymphoma.

Background And Objectives: Patients with B-cell lymphoma can be induced to mount a specific immune response against the individual idiotypic determinants expressed in their tumor cells. This form of active immunotherapy is now under evaluation in the clinical setting. We evaluated the feasibility and effectiveness of this kind of immunotherapy in a group of patients with low-grade lymphoma, which included two cases of bi/triclonal lymphoma.

Introduction: Renal function is one of the most important prognostic factors in multiple myeloma (MM). Patients with renal failure are generally excluded from high dose therapy even though they display a poor prognosis with conventional chemotherapy schemes. The aim of this study was to analyze the outcome of MM patients with renal insufficiency undergoing autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT), including the evaluation of the quality of PB stem cell collections, kinetics of engraftment, transplant-related mortality, response to high dose chemotherapy and survival.

Myeloablative treatments for multiple myeloma: update of a comparative study of different regimens used in patients from the Spanish registry for transplantation in multiple myeloma.

After a previous analysis that did not detect clear differences in the results of three conditioning regimens used for autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) in patients from the Spanish Registry for Transplant in Multiple Myeloma (MM), we have updated the registry, including a larger number of cases and a fourth conditioning regimen with a longer follow-up. We evaluate 472 MM patients treated with 200 mg/m2 melphalan (MEL200), 135 patients treated with 140 mg/m2 melphalan plus total body irradiation [(MEL140 + TBI)], 186 patients treated with 12 mg/kg busulphan plus 140 mg/m2 melphalan (BUMEL) and 28 patients treated with 14 mg/kg busulphan followed by cyclophosphamide 120 mg/kg (BUCY). There were no significant differences in respect to either transplant related death or haematological recovery, regardless of growth factor use, between the four conditioning programs.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of dietary fiber consumption and lifestyle on serum lipids in adult men with non-restricted diet and physical activity.

Methods: Two groups of 19 men were classified as high (48 g/day) and low fiber groups (27 g/day). Anthropometry, food frequency, daily weighed intakes and physical activity were done for a seven-day period.

[Colonic aganglionosis with ileal involvement. Ileocolic plasty].

During 1994 through 1999, we have treated five patients (3 boys, 2 girls) with total colonic aganglionosis (TCA) and ileal involvement. In three of them we performed a diverting ileostomy in the neonatal period and at the age of four and five months respectively in the remaining two patients, due to intestinal obstruction. Purpose: To analyze clinical outcome and significant prognostic factors for overall (OS) and time to treatment failure (TTF) in a group of 494 patients with Hodgkin's disease (HD) undergoing autologous stem-cell transplantation (ASCT).

Patients And Methods: Detailed records from the Grupo Español de Linfomas/Transplante Autólogo de Médula Osea Spanish Cooperative Group Database on 494 HD patients who received an ASCT between January 1984 and May 1998 were reviewed. In patients with B-cell lymphoma, only in rare cases a secreted paraprotein is found, and in very few of them an associated autoantibody activity has been demonstrated. Here we report the case of a patient with a low-grade B-cell lymphoma with a serum biclonal paraprotein (G,M)lambda and severe erythroblastopenia. Indirect immunofluorescence studies of total serum revealed cytoplasmic (Hep-2 cells) and extracellular matrix (rat tissue sections) staining, suggestive of a new specificity.

[Toxigenic Vibrio cholerae non-01].

The antimicrobial susceptibility and the presence of a heat-stable toxin were researched into 100 non-01 Vibrio cholerae strains sent by 7 different health centers to the National Reference Laboratory of Acute Diarrheal Diseases in "Pedro Kourí" Tropical Medicine Institute. The presence of 20% toxigenic non-01 Vibrio cholerae was detected, a figure substantially higher than that reported in other geographic areas, except for endemic areas. This result will make it possible to set epidemiological alert in Cuba because these strains can be infected by CTX phages (element transporting genes that encode for choleric toxin) which will give such strains an epidemic potential similar to that of the etiologic agent of cholera.
