Attenuated measles virus as a vaccine vector.

Live attenuated measles virus (MV) vaccines have an impressive record of safety, efficacy and ability to induce life-long immunity against measles infection. Using reverse genetics technology, such negative-strand RNA viruses can now be rescued from cloned DNA. This technology allows the insertion of exogenous genes encoding foreign antigens into the MV genome in such a way that they can be expressed by the MV vaccine strain, without affecting virus structure, propagation and cell targeting.

The results of consolidation with autologous stem-cell transplantation in patients with peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) in first complete remission: the Spanish Lymphoma and Autologous Transplantation Group experience.

Background: Peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) is a heterogeneous group of aggressive lymphomas associated with poor prognosis with standard chemotherapy. Consolidation with autologous stem-cell transplantation (ASCT) may improve survival. We present 74 patients transplanted in first complete response (CR) from the Spanish Lymphoma and Autologous Transplantation Group cooperative group.

Online learning: An alternative for STD/HIV/AIDS knowledge update.

The experience of the e-learning diploma "Specialist in management for control and prevention of STD/HIV/AIDS" for Latin-American health professionals is presented. It was developed by eminent advisory Chilean experts using a web CT platform with the support of the, Global Development Learning Network (GDLN) of World Bank and certificated by the Austral University of Chile, Virtual University and REUNA. The design, development, results of learning, and the opinion of the quality of the course are described.

Vegetable oils affect the composition of lipoproteins in sea bream (Sparus aurata).

The aim of the present study was to determine the influence of the dietary fatty acid profile on the lipoprotein composition in sea bream fed different vegetable oils. Six experimental diets were formulated combining fish oil with three vegetable oils (soybean, rapeseed, linseed) in order to obtain 60-80 % (w/w) fish-oil replacement. VLDL, LDL and HDL in plasma samples were obtained by sequential centrifugal flotation.

Variations in urine excretion of steroid hormones after an acute session and after a 4-week programme of strength training.

Performing strength exercise, whether acutely or in a training programme, leads to alterations at the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axes. One way to evaluate these changes is by analysis of the excretion of steroid hormones in the urine. The present study determined the variations in the urine profile of glucuroconjugated steroids after a single session of strength exercise and after a 4-week programme of strength training.

Follow-up study of learning-disabled children treated with neurofeedback or placebo.

This report is a 2-year follow-up to a previous study describing positive behavioral changes and a spurt of EEG maturation with theta/alpha neurofeedback (NFB) training in a group of Learning Disabled (LD) children. In a control paired group, treated with placebo, behavioral changes were not observed and the smaller maturational EEG changes observed were easily explained by increased age. Two years later, the EEG maturational lag in Control Group children increased, reaching abnormally high theta Relative Power values; the absence of positive behavioral changes continued and the neurological diagnosis remained LD.

The effect of CYP2J2, CYP3A4, CYP3A5 and the MDR1 polymorphisms and gender on the urinary excretion of the metabolites of the H-receptor antihistamine ebastine: a pilot study.

Aims: To determine the effect of gender and the genetic polymorphisms of CYP2J2, CYP3A4, CYP3A5 and MDR1 on the urinary excretion of the H(1) antihistamine ebastine in healthy subjects.

Methods: Eighty-nine Caucasians were studied. The presence of polymorphisms in genes known to be involved in ebastine metabolism and transport (CYP2J2*2,*3,*4,*6,*7, CYP3A4*1B, CYP3A5*3, *6 and MDR1(ABCB1)(C3435T)) was assessed by means of PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism and sequencing methods.

Unsuspected lupin allergens hidden in food.

Background: Lupin is a herbaceous plant from the legume family whose seed allergens usually have cross-reaction with peanut. Lupin flour is used in human nutrition because of its high nutritional and functional qualities.

Aims: The aim of this work was to detect non-specified lupin proteins contained in several manufactured foods.

[Do neonates have the same pharmacotherapeutic opportunities as adults?].

Introduction: The use of drugs in pediatrics, specially in neonates, poses two main problems: the legal conditions for their use in this population and the lack of commercial formulations suitable for pediatric dosing.

Patients And Methods: We reviewed the drug prescriptions of all patients admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit over 46 days, chosen at random between September and November 2005.

Results: A total of 2,558 drug prescriptions were issued, corresponding to 62 different drugs.

Seropositivity to a major allergen of Anisakis simplex, Ani s 1, in dyspeptic patients with Helicobacter pylori infection: histological and laboratory findings and clinical significance.

Previous studies have demonstrated a high prevalence of seropositivity to the Ani s 1 protein in dyspeptic patients with Helicobacter pylori infection, but it is not known whether this represents episodes of anisakiasis misdiagnosis or previous exposure to the parasite without clinical relevance. To investigate the clinical significance of seropositivity to the Ani s 1 protein, a cohort study was performed with 87 consecutive dyspeptic patients who were treated for H. pylori infection.

[HIV/AIDS-related stigma and discrimination: the case of health care providers in México].

Objective: To analyze the social construction of stigma and discrimination processes associated with HIV/AIDS and people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA), based on the perceptions of health care providers in three states of the Mexican Republic.

Material And Methods: Qualitative and quantitative description. Observation at nine institutions; in-depth interviews (14) and surveys (373) directed to providers of health services.

Contrary to larval essential fatty acid (EFA) requirements, the effect of dietary neutral lipid supply has been little investigated in marine fish larvae. The present work investigates the effect of feeding Senegalese sole larvae on Artemia enriched with higher or lower doses of lipid emulsion. Two lipid sources - soybean oil and fish oil - were compared.

Vegetable lipid sources affect in vitro biosynthesis of triacylglycerols and phospholipids in the intestine of sea bream (Sparus aurata).

Despite the good growth performance of several fish species when dietary fish oil is partly replaced by vegetable oils, recent studies have reported several types of intestinal morphological alterations in cultured fish fed high contents of vegetable lipid sources. However, the physiological process implied in these morphological changes have not been clarified yet, since alterations in the physiological mechanisms involved in the different processes of lipid absorption could be responsible for such gut morphological features. The objective of the present study was to investigate the activities of reacylation pathways in fish, the glycerol-3-phosphate and the monoacylglycerol pathways, in order to clarify the intestinal triacylglycerol (TAG) and phospholipid biosynthesis to better understand the morphological alterations observed in the intestine of fish fed vegetable oils.

[Childhood eosinophilic pustulosis].

Childhood eosinophilic pustulosis is a rare disease that is characterized by recurrent outbreaks of pruritic pustules and follicular papules. The lesions are sterile and contain masses of eosinophils related to the scalp hair follicle. Because of the good prognosis for these symptoms, conservative treatment with topical corticosteroids is recommended.

Nonmyeloablative stem cell transplantation is an effective therapy for refractory or relapsed hodgkin lymphoma: results of a spanish prospective cooperative protocol.

We report the results of reduced-intensity conditioning allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-RIC) in patients with advanced Hodgkin lymphoma (HL). Forty patients with relapsed or refractory HL were homogeneously treated with an RIC protocol (fludarabine 150 mg/m(2) intravenously plus melphalan 140 mg/m(2) intravenously) and cyclosporin A and methotrexate as graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis. Twenty-one patients (53%) had received >2 lines of chemotherapy, 23 patients (58%) had received radiotherapy, and 29 patients (73%) had experienced treatment failure with a previous autologous stem cell transplantation.

Effect of caffeine on oxidative stress during maximum incremental exercise.

Caffeine (1,3,7-trimethylxanthine) is an habitual substance present in a wide variety of beverages and in chocolate-based foods and it is also used as adjuvant in some drugs. The antioxidant ability of caffeine has been reported in contrast with its pro- oxidant effects derived from its action mechanism such as the systemic release of catecholamines. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of caffeine on exercise oxidative stress, measuring plasma vitamins A, E, C and malonaldehyde (MDA) as markers of non enzymatic antioxidant status and lipid peroxidation respectively.

Hedgehog signaling maintains resident hepatic progenitors throughout life.

Hedgehog signaling through its receptor, Patched, activates transcription of genes, including Patched, that regulate the fate of various progenitors. Although Hedgehog signaling is required for endodermal commitment and hepatogenesis, the possibility that it regulates liver turnover in adults had not been considered because mature liver epithelial cells lack Hedgehog signaling. Herein, we show that this pathway is essential throughout life for maintaining hepatic progenitors.

Effect of dietary lipids on plasma fatty acid profiles and prostaglandin and leptin production in gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata).

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different levels of substitution of fish oil by vegetable oils rich in oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids on gilthead seabream plasma and leukocyte fatty acid compositions and prostaglandin (PG) and leptin production. Juvenile seabream of 24 g initial body mass were fed four iso-energetic and iso-proteic experimental diets for 281 days. Fatty acid composition of plasma lipids was markedly affected by the inclusion of vegetable oils (VO).

A novel, evolutionarily conserved protein phosphatase complex involved in cisplatin sensitivity.

Using a combination of tandem affinity purification tagging and mass spectrometry, we characterized a novel, evolutionarily conserved protein phosphatase 4 (PP4)-containing complex (PP4cs, protein phosphatase 4, cisplatin-sensitive complex) that plays a critical role in the eukaryotic DNA damage response. PP4cs is comprised of the catalytic subunit PP4C; a known regulatory subunit, PP4R2; and a novel protein that we termed PP4R3. The Saccharomyces cerevisiae PP4R3 ortholog Psy2 was identified previously in a screen for sensitivity to the DNA-damaging agent and anticancer drug cisplatin.

Influence of the intensity of the conditioning regimen on the characteristics of acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease after allogeneic transplantation.

The graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) characteristics of 150 consecutive patients undergoing reduced intensity conditioning allogeneic (allo-RIC) transplants and 88 patients undergoing myeloablative conditioning regimen were analysed. All patients received the same GVHD prophylaxis and peripheral blood stem cells from a human leucocyte antigen identical sibling. Posttransplant hematopoiesis in patients undergoing sibling allogeneic stem cell transplantation reflects that of their respective donors although with a lower functional capability.

We tested the principle of whether patient long-term hematopoiesis following allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) reflects the characteristics of the hematopoiesis of their respective donor. For this purpose, we analyzed bone marrow (BM) hematopoiesis using long-term cultures (LTC), delta assays, and clonogeneic assays as well as CD34+ cells and their subsets by flow cytometry in a series of 37 patients undergoing allo-SCT, and we compared it to that of their respective human leukocyte antigen-matched sibling donors in a paired study performed more than 1 year after the transplant procedure. Interestingly, the main factor that influenced post-allo-SCT BM hematopoiesis in the long term was donor hematopoiesis.
