BCR-mediated Ag processing and presentation is critical to the initiation and control of a humoral immune response. Trafficking of internalized Ag-BCR complexes to intracellular Ag processing compartments is driven by ubiquitination of the cytoplasmic domain of the BCR. Using a biochemical approach, it is here established that ubiquitinated Ag-BCR complexes are formed via a signaling-dependent mechanism and restricted to plasma membrane lipid rafts.

A dynamic method (DM) recently proposed for the management of captive subdivided populations was evaluated using the pilot species Drosophila melanogaster. By accounting for the particular genetic population structure, the DM determines the optimal mating pairs, their contributions to progeny and the migration pattern that minimize the overall co-ancestry in the population with a control of inbreeding levels. After a pre-management period such that one of the four subpopulations had higher inbreeding and differentiation than the others, three management methods were compared for 10 generations over three replicates: (1) isolated subpopulations (IS), (2) one-migrant-per-generation rule (OMPG), (3) DM aimed to produce the same or lower inbreeding coefficient than OMPG.

We carried out a simulation study to compare the efficiency of three alternative programs (DFDIST, DETSELD and BAYESCAN) to detect loci under directional selection from genome-wide scans using dominant markers. We also evaluated the efficiency of correcting for multiple testing those methods that use a classical probability approach. Under a wide range of scenarios, we conclude that BAYESCAN appears to be more efficient than the other methods, detecting a usually high percentage of true selective loci as well as less than 1% of outliers (false positives) under a fully neutral model.

It is well established that schizophrenia is associated with difficulties in recognizing facial emotional expressions, but few studies have reported the presence of this deficit among their unaffected relatives. This study attempts to add new evidence of familial association on an emotional expression processing test. The study evaluated the performance of 93 paranoid schizophrenia patients, 110 first-degree relatives of probands from multiplex schizophrenia families, and 109 nonpsychiatric controls on a facial emotional recognition test using a computer morphing technique to present the dynamic expressions.

The ferrocene-benzobisimidazole derivative shows high affinity for Pb(2+) and Zn(2+) metal cations over a range of other metal cations examined. In the presence of Pb(2+) the emission spectrum is red-shifted by 13 nm with an important chelation-enhanced fluorescence effect (CHEF) CHEF = 55. The presence of Zn(2+) cations also induced a perturbation of the emission spectrum although to a lesser extent than that found for Pb(2+) cations (CHEF = 37).

In a now classical paper, Denham Harman suggested that free radicals produced during mitochondrial respiration cause cumulative oxidative damage, resulting in aging and age-related disorders and pathologies. Proponents of this hypothesis have focused their attention, not surprisingly, on mitochondria arguing that these organelles may serve as the biological clock for aging. Indeed, work on many models, including filamentous fungi, nematodes, and mammals have revealed that age-dependent reorganizations of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) may play a central role in the aging of these organisms.

The interaction of O(2) with gold foil and gold nanoparticles grown by thermal deposition on TiO(2)(110) was studied by in situ ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy at room temperature. No spontaneous dissociation of O(2) was observed either on Au foil or on Au nanoparticles up to 1 Torr of O(2). X-ray irradiation, however, is very effective in promoting gold oxidation on both surfaces in the presence of O(2).

The paradigm sirtuin, Sir2p, of budding yeast is required for establishing cellular age asymmetry, which includes the retention of damaged and aggregated proteins in mother cells. By establishing the global genetic interaction network of SIR2 we identified the polarisome, the formin Bni1p, and myosin motor protein Myo2p as essential components of the machinery segregating protein aggregates during mitotic cytokinesis. Moreover, we found that daughter cells can clear themselves of damage by a polarisome- and tropomyosin-dependent polarized flow of aggregates into the mother cell compartment.

A new type of bioactive ceramic has been designed and obtained from high-temperature phase information from the wollastonite (CaSiO(3))-diopside (CaMg(SiO(3))(2)) phase equilibrium diagram. The selected composition was that corresponding to the eutectic point of the pseudobinary CaSiO(3)-CaMg(SiO(3))(2) system. The sintering behaviour, phase evolution, microstructural changes and in vitro bioactivity of CaSiO(3)-CaMg(SiO(3))(2) eutectic bioceramics were analysed by differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and image analysis.

We carried out an in silico analysis of the complete genome sequences of 14 species, including eukaryotes, prokaryotes, and archaea, to investigate the proportion of amplified fragment length polymorphism bands that are homoplasious for the different species, as well as the distribution of fragment lengths. We investigated several possible reasons for the disagreement, previously observed in Arabidopsis thaliana, between the observed fragment length distribution and the null random sequence distribution, which occurs in the direction of a deficit of fragments of small length and an excess of those of large length with respect to the null distribution. We made the following findings: 1) The positive relationship previously found between the percentage of homoplasy and genome size is a direct consequence of the number of observed bands and the GC content.

A new chemosensor molecule 3 based on a ferrocene-quinoxaline dyad recognizes mercury (II) cations in acetonitrile solution. Upon recognition, an anodic shift of the ferrocene/ferrocenium oxidation peaks and a progressive red-shift (Δλ=140 nm) of the low-energy band, are observed in its absorption spectrum. This change in the absorption spectrum is accompanied by a colour change from orange to deep green, which can be used for a "naked-eye" detection of this metal cation.

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(12)H(9)N(2) (+)·ClO(4) (-)·C(6)H(6)N(4)O·2H(2)O, contains a monoprotonated 4,7-phenanthrolinium (47phen) cation, a perchlorate anion balancing its charge, a neutral mol-ecule of 5-methyl-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidin-7(4H)-one (HmtpO) and two inter-stitial water mol-ecules. In the crystal structure, the acidic H atoms of 47phenH(+) and HmtpO form strong hydrogen bonds with the water mol-ecules, which in turn act as hydrogen-bond donors, forming links between them and towards the carbonyl O atom of HmtpO, the non-protonated N atom of 47phen(+) and one of the O atoms of the anion.

Using in silico amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) fingerprints, we explore the relationship between sequence similarity and phylogeny accuracy to test when, in terms of genetic divergence, the quality of AFLP data becomes too low to be informative for a reliable phylogenetic reconstruction. We generated DNA sequences with known phylogenies using balanced and unbalanced trees with recent, uniform and ancient radiations, and average branch lengths (from the most internal node to the tip) ranging from 0.02 to 0.

The synthesis, electrochemical, optical, and anion sensing properties of ferrocene-fused imidazole dyads are presented. Ferrocene-benzobisimidazole dyad 1 behaves as a highly selective redox, chromogenic and fluorescent chemosensor molecule for AcO(-) anion in DMSO/H(2)O: the oxidation redox peak is cathodically shifted (DeltaE(1/2) = -170 mV), perturbation of the UV-vis spectrum, and the emission band is both red-shifted (Delta lambda = 13 nm) and increased (Chelation Enhanced Fluorescence, CHEF = 133) upon complexation with this anion. The related ferrocene-bisbenzimidazole dyad 2 has shown the ability for sensing both H(2)PO(4)(-) and HP(2)O(7)(3-) anions in the same medium.
