The crime rates in urban centers are rising. The psychological impact of crime can range from distress to longstanding mental health impairment. Despite the rising crime rates and psychological impact on victims, little research has been conducted on older adult crime victims' mental health.

Augmented Reality Education Experience (AREduX): An Augmented Reality Experience and Experiential Education Medium to Teach Empathy to Healthcare Providers and Caregivers of Persons Living With Dementia.

Previous research indicates that greater empathy by healthcare providers (HCPs) and informal caregivers leads to better care and improved patient satisfaction and outcomes for persons living with dementia (PLWD). Since few programs exist to train HCPs to develop empathy, we created the augmented reality education experience (AREduX), a proof-of-concept prototype that employs augmented reality (AR) to simulate the physical and cognitive symptoms that PLWD experience. This unique experience simulates the effects of dementia for training purposes with the goal of promoting more empathetic responses from HCPs and informal caregivers when attending to a PLWD.

Three-Body Dynamics of the a_{1}(1260) Resonance from Lattice QCD.

Resonant hadronic systems often exhibit a complicated decay pattern in which three-body dynamics play a relevant or even dominant role. In this work we focus on the a_{1}(1260) resonance. For the first time, the pole position and branching ratios of a three-body resonance are calculated from lattice QCD using one-, two-, and three-meson interpolators and a three-body finite-volume formalism extended to spin and coupled channels.

Contextual Data in IPUMS DHS: Physical and Social Environment Variables linked to the Demographic and Health Surveys.

The Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) are the most important source of comparative information on the health of women and young children in low- and middle-income countries and are well-suited for studies of the relationship between environmental factors and health. However, barriers have limited the use of the DHS for these purposes. IPUMS DHS, an online data dissemination tool, overcomes these barriers, simplifying comparative analyses with DHS.

Culicoides species community composition and infection status with parasites in an urban environment of east central Texas, USA.

Background: Despite their importance as vectors of zoonotic parasites that can impact human and animal health, Culicoides species distribution across different habitat types is largely unknown. Here we document the community composition of Culicoides found in an urban environment including developed and natural sites in east central Texas, a region of high vector diversity due to subtropical climates, and report their infection status with haemoparasites.

Hypermobility syndrome usually causes pain in limbs from extension type injuries. The authors report on a 16-yr-old female adolescent with incapacitating chest pain secondary to extreme hypermobility of the chest. This pain led the patient to see multiple specialists without improvement or diagnosis.

Engagement with key stakeholders or partners who engage in collaborative community needs assessments has been linked to improved community health outcomes. The food and beverage industry is seeking to broaden the palette of naturally derived colorants. Although considerable effort has been devoted to the search for new blue colorants in fruits and vegetables, less attention has been directed toward blue compounds from other sources such as bacteria and fungi. Introduction: Some evidence suggests that a history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with an increased risk of dementia later in life. The clinical features of dementia associated with TBI have not been well investigated.

Three approaches to investigating functional compromise to the default mode network after traumatic axonal injury.

The default mode network (DMN) is a reliably elicited functional neural network with potential clinical implications. Its discriminant and prognostic utility following traumatic axonal injury (TAI) have not been previously investigated. The present study used three approaches to analyze DMN functional connectedness, including a whole-brain analysis [A1], network-specific analysis [A2], and between-node (edge) analysis [A3].

Alternatives to those artificial FD&C food colorants.

Replacement of artificial food dyes with natural colorants is a current marketing trend, notwithstanding the fact that neither the United States nor the European Union (EU) has defined natural with respect to food colors. Consumer groups have concerns over the safety of synthetic colorants, and in addition, many of the naturally derived colorants provide health benefits. Food scientists frequently have the assignment of replacing artificial colorants with natural alternatives.

Hypoxia inducible factor (HIF) is the major transcription factor involved in the regulation of the cellular response to hypoxia, or low oxygen tensions. Even though HIF-1 function is mostly studied following hypoxic stress, well oxygenated areas of several diseased tissues have detectable levels of this transcription factor. Therefore, it is surprising how little is known about the function of HIF in normoxia.

Here we report that under hypoxic conditions, IκB kinase (IKK) activity is induced through a calcium/calmodulin-dependent kinase 2 (CaMK2)-dependent pathway distinct from that for other common inducers of NF-κB.

Knowing the differences and potential benefits of hospice and palliative care can help healthcare professionals advocate for their patients and make proactive decisions about patient care. Providing admission into the appropriate program can facilitate symptom management and impart the best quality of life possible for this vulnerable population. Case studies will be used to differentiate hospice from palliative care, and the history, philosophy, availability, requirements, and barriers to receiving care will be discussed.

Although the definition in all the DSMs explicitly rules out deviant sexual behavior as sufficient for labeling someone as having a mental disorder, deviant sexual behavior counts as sufficient for all the paraphilias in DSM-III-R. In DSM-IV, the account of all the paraphilias is made consistent with the definition.

Background: Extracts of the creosote bush, Larrea tridentata, have been used for centuries by natives of western American and Mexican deserts to treat a variety of infectious diseases and inflammatory disorders. The beneficial activity of this plant has been linked to the compound nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA) and its various substituted derivatives. Recently, tetra-O-methyl NDGA or terameprocol (TMP) has been shown to inhibit the growth of certain tumor-derived cell lines and is now in clinical trials for the treatment of human cancer.

In this study, we examine how infection of murine and human fibroblasts by adenovirus (Ad) serotype 5 (Ad5) affects the expression and activity of cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and production of PGs. Our experiments showed that infection with Ad5 is accompanied by the rapid activation of cPLA2 and the cPLA2-dependent release of [3H]arachidonic acid ([3H]AA). Increased expression of COX-2 was also observed after Ad infection, as was production of PGE2 and PGI2.

Evidence against calcium as a mediator of mitochondrial dysfunction during apoptosis induced by arachidonic acid and other free fatty acids.

Apoptosis is often accompanied by activation of phospholipase A(2), causing release of free fatty acids (FFAs), which in turn are thought to contribute to the loss of mitochondrial transmembrane potential (Deltapsi(m)). In these experiments, we asked whether calcium plays a role as an intermediate in this process. A total of 14 FFAs were compared for their ability to cause loss of Deltapsi(m) and for their ability to affect levels of intracellular calcium.

Nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA) is a plant lignan produced by Larrea tridentata, the creosote bush of the American southwest. In this report we examine the mechanism underlying the ability of NDGA to inhibit TNF-induced apoptosis. Our results show that NDGA blocks many key indicators of apoptosis.
