In this study, the results from laboratory measurements of the devolatilization kinetics of switchgrass in a rapidly heated fixed bed reactor flushed with argon and operated at constant temperatures between 600 and 800°C was reported. Results indicate that switchgrass decomposes in two sequential stages during pyrolysis: stage I involves the evaporation and devolatilization of water and extractives and stage II involves that of hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin. The estimated global activation energy for stage II increased from 52.

Spark-ignited internal combustion engines have evolved considerably in recent years in response to increasingly stringent regulations for emissions and fuel economy. One new advanced engine strategy ustilizes high levels of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) to reduce combustion temperatures, thereby increasing thermodynamic efficiency and reducing nitrogen oxide emissions. While this strategy can be highly effective, it also poses major control and design challenges due to the large combustion oscillations that develop at sufficiently high EGR levels.

In this paper we explore the global dynamics of an agent-type model for bubbles in gas-fluidized beds and demonstrate that these features are consistent with experimentally observed behavior. The model accounts for the simultaneous interactions of thousands of individual bubbles and includes mass-transfer and first-order reactions between the gas and solids so that the impact of the dynamics is reflected in reactant conversion. We start with model parameters that have been demonstrated to produce time average behavior consistent with experimental reactor measurements.

The dynamics of a thermal pulse combustor model are examined. It is found that, as a parameter related to the fuel flow rate is varied, the combustor will undergo a transition from periodic pulsing to chaotic pulsing to a chaotic transient leading to flameout. Results from the numerical model are compared to those obtained from a laboratory-scale thermal pulse combustor.

Symbolic approach for measuring temporal "irreversibility".

We describe a symbolic approach for measuring temporal "irreversibility" in time-series measurements. Temporal irreversibility is important because it excludes Gaussian linear dynamics and static transformations of such dynamics from the set of possible generating processes. A symbolic method for measuring temporal irreversibility is attractive because it is computationally efficient, robust to noise, and simplifies statistical analysis of confidence limits.

An experimental thermal pulse combustor and a differential equation model of this device are shown to exhibit chaotic behavior under certain conditions. Chaos arises in the model by means of a progression of period-doubling bifurcations that occur when operating parameters such as combustor wall temperature or air/fuel flow are adjusted to push the system toward flameout. Bifurcation sequences have not yet been reproduced experimentally, but similarities are demonstrated between the dynamic features of pressure fluctuations in the model and experiment.

A simple and inexpensive slam freezing device has been constructed that allows consistently good rapid freezing of uncryoprotected tissue. The device employs a dry liquid-nitrogen-cooled cooper surface and a slamming plunger designed to provide rapid and uniform tissue to metal contact.
