Objective: A previous study reported on a 16-week placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial (RCT) of metformin for weight stabilization in 61 children and adolescents 6 to 17 years old with autism spectrum disorder who were prescribed atypical antipsychotics. The present study describes the results of a 16-week open-label extension.

Method: Fifty-two participants from the acute trial (85%) entered the extension; 22 had been on metformin during the initial RCT and 30 had been on placebo.

It has been proposed that early differences in sensory responsiveness arise from atypical neural function and produce cascading effects on development across domains. This longitudinal study prospectively followed infants at heightened risk for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) based on their status as younger siblings of children diagnosed with ASD (Sibs-ASD) and infants at relatively lower risk for ASD (siblings of typically developing children; Sibs-TD) to examine the developmental sequelae and possible neurophysiological substrates of a specific sensory response pattern: unusually intense interest in nonsocial sensory stimuli or "sensory seeking." At 18 months, sensory seeking and social orienting were measured with the Sensory Processing Assessment, and a potential neural signature for sensory seeking (i.

Importance: Atypical antipsychotic medications are indicated for the treatment of irritability and agitation symptoms in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Unfortunately, these medications are associated with weight gain and metabolic complications that are especially troubling in children and with long-term use.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of metformin for weight gain associated with atypical antipsychotic medications in children and adolescents with ASD (defined in the protocol as DSM-IV diagnosis of autistic disorder, Asperger disorder, or pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified), aged 6 to 17 years.

Diversity of key consonants used in communication (DKCC) is a value-added predictor of expressive language growth in initially preverbal children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Studying the predictors of DKCC growth in young children with ASD might inform treatment of this under-studied aspect of prelinguistic development. Eighty-seven initially preverbal preschoolers with ASD and their parents were observed at five measurement periods.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been characterized by atypical socio-communicative behavior, sensorimotor impairment and abnormal neurodevelopmental trajectories. DTI has been used to determine the presence and nature of abnormality in white matter integrity that may contribute to the behavioral phenomena that characterize ASD. Although atypical patterns of sensory responding in ASD are well documented in the behavioral literature, much less is known about the neural networks associated with aberrant sensory processing.

Results are presented from a search for the rare decays Bs(0)→μ+ μ- and B(0)→μ+ μ- in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=7 and 8 TeV, with data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of 5 and 20  fb(-1), respectively, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. An unbinned maximum-likelihood fit to the dimuon invariant mass distribution gives a branching fraction B(Bs(0)→μ+ μ-)=(3.0(-0.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted measuring the production rates of W and Z bosons in proton-proton collisions at a collision energy of 8 TeV, using data from the CMS detector.
  • The results indicated a total inclusive cross-section for W bosons of 12.21 nb and for Z bosons of 1.15 nb, with small associated uncertainties.
  • These findings are consistent with advanced theoretical predictions and represent the first measurement of these bosons at this energy level in such collisions.

A study of color coherence effects in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7[Formula: see text] is presented. The data used in the analysis were collected in 2010 with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb[Formula: see text]. Events are selected that contain at least three jets and where the two jets with the largest transverse momentum exhibit a back-to-back topology.

Spectra of identified charged hadrons are measured in pPb collisions with the CMS detector at the LHC at [Formula: see text]. Charged pions, kaons, and protons in the transverse-momentum range [Formula: see text]-1.7[Formula: see text] and laboratory rapidity [Formula: see text] are identified via their energy loss in the silicon tracker.

  • - The mass of the top quark is determined using data from candidate events featuring at least six jets, collected by the CMS detector during proton-proton collisions at [Formula: see text] TeV in 2011, totaling an integrated luminosity of 3.54 [Formula: see text].
  • - Each event undergoes a kinematic fit of the jets to a [Formula: see text] hypothesis to accurately reconstruct the mass.
  • - The final measurement for the top-quark mass is reported as [Formula: see text] GeV, which is further refined by combining it with earlier measurements from different decay modes by CMS, resulting in a combined mass of [Formula: see text] GeV.

A search for anomalous production of events with three or more isolated leptons and bottom-quark jets produced in pp collisions at √s=8 TeV is presented. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 fb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2012.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines unusual production of top quark-antiquark pairs from proton-proton collisions at a high energy level (√s=8 TeV), utilizing data from the CMS detector at the LHC.
  • - A total of 19.7 fb(-1) of data was analyzed, and the results show that the observed mass spectrum aligns with predictions made by the standard model of particle physics.
  • - For the first time, limitations on production cross sections and branching fractions are set, exploring specific new physics models that have not been addressed by previous precise measurements.

Background: Restricted interests are a class of repetitive behavior in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) whose intensity and narrow focus often contribute to significant interference with daily functioning. While numerous neuroimaging studies have investigated executive circuits as putative neural substrates of repetitive behavior, recent work implicates affective neural circuits in restricted interests. We sought to explore the role of affective neural circuits and determine how restricted interests are distinguished from hobbies or interests in typical development.

Article Synopsis
  • The study reports the first measurements of vector-boson production associated with a top quark-antiquark pair during proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, using data from the CMS detector at the LHC from 2011.
  • Two analysis channels were employed: a trilepton analysis for ttZ events and a same-sign dilepton analysis for ttV events (where V can be W or Z).
  • The measured cross sections are σ(ttZ) = 0.28 pb and σ(ttV) = 0.43 pb, both significant at over 3 standard deviations, and they align with theoretical predictions within the stated uncertainties.

Article Synopsis
  • A search for supersymmetric processes in proton-proton collisions at 8 TeV was conducted using 11.7 fb of data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC.
  • The study focused on distinguishing events with real versus mismeasured missing transverse energy by analyzing jet counts, their energy sum, and identifying bottom quark jets.
  • Results showed no significant excess of events compared to standard model predictions, leading to exclusion limits for gluino and squark masses, with gluino masses up to 1125 GeV and squark masses up to 600 GeV being ruled out, depending on the specific models considered.
