Introduction: Screening for islet-specific autoantibodies can identify individuals at risk for type 1 diabetes (T1D). Despite calls for increased nationwide autoantibody screening efforts, it is unclear how many individuals have participated in screening among people who may benefit from it. Moreover, knowledge and perceptions of autoantibody screening in real-world samples are not well understood.

Laboratory research in Ghana demonstrated the effectiveness of an isolate of Beauveria bassiana (IMI 389521) from the United Kingdom against the larger grain borer Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae), a major pest of stored maize. The minimum effective concentration, following artificial infestation trials on maize, was between 10 and 10 cfu/kg maize. Before moving out to village-level control, a major requirement was to determine if the product could effect control in artificially infested maize held under real environmental conditions in several locations in Ghana.

Identification of sources of resistance in cowpea lines to Macrophomina root rot disease in Northern Ghana.

Macrophomina root rot disease (MRRD) caused by is an emerging threat to the profitable cowpea production in northern Ghana. Recommended control methods including the use of fungicides are ineffective and expensive for resource poor farmers whilst biocontrol options are not commercially available. An integrated method based on host plant resistance is considered the cheapest and most effective method of managing the disease.

Tomato () production in Ghana is limited by the root-knot nematode (, and yield losses over 70% have been experienced in farmer fields. Major management strategies of the root-knot nematode (RKN), such as rotation and nematicide application, and crop rotation are either little efficient and harmful to environments, with high control cost, respectively. Therefore, this study aims to examine morphometric variations of RKN populations in Ghana, using principal component analysis (PCA), of which the information can be utilized for the development of tomato cultivars resistant to RKN.

History: Significant health and economic challenges persist in the community more than a decade later. Healthcare providers offered healthcare services to community members in the immediate aftermath of the disaster, and many still live in the community and continue to provide healthcare services.

Co-extinction in a host-parasite network: identifying key hosts for network stability.

Parasites comprise a substantial portion of total biodiversity. Ultimately, this means that host extinction could result in many secondary extinctions of obligate parasites and potentially alter host-parasite network structure. Here, we examined a highly resolved fish-parasite network to determine key hosts responsible for maintaining parasite diversity and network structure (quantified here as nestedness and modularity).

Photovoice: Assessing the Long-Term Impact of a Disaster on a Community's Quality of Life.

Photovoice is a qualitative method of inquiry whereby individuals can document their lived experiences, particularly individuals whose voices are not typically heard in regard to promoting social change and policy development. We used photovoice to elicit major themes regarding community members' perceptions of the long-term impact on their quality of life as a deadly technological disaster hit a small, rural town in South Carolina. Overall, participants photographed more negative images than positive.

How important are hemoparasites to migratory songbirds? Evaluating physiological measures and infection status in three neotropical migrants during stopover.

Long-distance migrations are energetically expensive for many animals, including migratory songbirds. During these demanding journeys, birds likely face limitations in allocating resources to different physiological functions, including lipid reserves needed to fuel the migration and costly immune defense against pathogens. We sampled three species of long-distance migratory songbirds during their fall migration through coastal Georgia and quantified their body condition, subcutaneous fat reserves, and infection status with blood parasites (Hemoproteus and Plasmodium).

First Report of Bacterial Wilt Caused by Ralstonia solanacearum in Ghana, West Africa.

Tomato and pepper plants exhibiting wilt symptoms were collected from fields in seven villages in Northern (Vea, Tono, Pwalugu), Ashanti (Agogo, Akumadan), and Brong Ahafo (Tanoso, Tuobodom) regions of western Ghana in November 2012. The plants were wilted without leaf yellowing or necrosis. Disease incidence was generally low, with less than 20% symptomatic plants observed.

Background: Non-exercise (N-EX) questionnaires have been developed to determine maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) in healthy populations. There are limited reliable and validated N-EX questionnaires for the HIV+ population that provide estimates of habitual physical activity and not VO2max.

Objectives: To determine how well regression equations developed previously on healthy populations, including N-EX prediction equations for VO2max and age-predicted maximal heart rates (APMHR), worked on an HIV+ population; and to develop a specific N-EX prediction equation for VO2max and APMHR for HIV+ individuals.

Leukocyte response to eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus in a wild passerine bird.

Leukocyte counts are frequently used to assess the immunologic status of animals; however, few studies have directly looked at the predictive value of leukocyte counts and an animal's ability to respond to an infection with a pathogen. Understanding how an animal's leukocyte profile is altered by an active infection can assist with interpretation of leukocyte profiles in animals for which infection status is not known. In this study we examine the leukocyte counts of gray catbirds (Dumetella carolinensis) infected with eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus (EEEV).

First Report of Pseudocercospora angolensis Causing Fruit and Leaf Spot of Citrus in Ghana.

Citrus is one of the most important crops in Ghana, representing a large proportion of the fresh fruit consumed in the country. In 2004, symptoms consisting of necrotic leaf spots of about 1 cm in diameter with light brown centers and dark brown margins surrounded by a yellow halo were first observed in sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) and mandarin (C. reticulata) orchards in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

Taro (Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott) is an important food crop cultivated for its edible tubers in Ghana. Quantitative surface plasmon resonance imaging: a simple approach to automated angle scanning.

Here we present an automated angle-scanning surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRi) instrument which provides multiplexed, quantitative reflectance data over a wide angular range. Angle-dependent artifacts, which arise from the simple optical setup, are corrected using software. This enables monitoring of significantly different surface coatings in many solvents, which would be outside the dynamic range of typical fixed-angle instruments.

In 2004, South Africa experienced its first recorded outbreak of a highly pathogenic notifiable avian influenza (HPNAI) viral strain of the H5N2 subtype in ostriches in the Eastern Cape province. The traditional ostrich-farming areas in the Western Cape province report almost yearly outbreaks of low pathogenicity avian influenza (LPAI) in ostriches, which is attributed to introduction by wild birds and certain climatic patterns. During the winter of 2004, LPAI H3N8, H4N8, H5N2 and H5N1 avian influenza viruses were isolated from wild aquatic birds.
