Background: Follicular fluid (FF) contains compounds that can modulate NADP(+)-dependent oxidation of cortisol by type 1 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11betaHSD). The objective of this study was to investigate the relationships between levels of the ovarian modulators of type 1 11betaHSD, intra-follicular cortisol:cortisone ratios and the clinical outcome of IVF cycles.

Pigs and poultry in the United Kingdom have undeniably been exposed to the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) agent. They consumed the same ruminant protein that gave rise to the BSE epidemic in cattle, but there has been no evidence of an epidemic in these species. Experimental investigations have shown pigs to be susceptible to infection by multiple parenteral challenge, but resistant to oral exposure with BSE-infected cattle brain.

In male rats, a steroid-sensitive circuit in the forebrain regulates mating behavior. The masculine phenotype in one component of the circuit, the posterodorsal nucleus of the medial amygdala (MePD), depends on the level of circulating androgens in the adult. In the ovary, cortisol-cortisone interconversion is catalysed by isoforms of 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11betaHSD). The objective of this study was to establish whether human follicular fluid (hFF), obtained after controlled ovarian hyperstimulation, contains paracrine modulators of 11betaHSD activity. Of 274 hFF samples tested for effects in rat kidney homogenates, 206 hFF samples significantly inhibited NADP(+)-dependent oxidation of cortisol within 1 h (by 11-67% of control 11betaHSD activity), whereas 42 hFF samples significantly stimulated 11betaHSD activity (16-210% increase relative to control).

The medial nucleus of the amygdala (MeA) is a steroid-sensitive region that has been implicated in the expression of behaviors such as mating and aggression. The male Siberian hamster (Phodopus sungorus) uses light cues to regulate its reproductive neuroendocrine system, reducing androgen synthesis in the autumn and increasing it in the spring. There is also evidence that short photoperiods reduce the sensitivity of the brain to the behavioral effects of androgen.

Rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD) has become established in wild rabbit populations throughout Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand. The abundance of wild rabbits has been significantly reduced, particularly in drier areas of southern Spain, inland Australia and South Island New Zealand. Adhesion of parasitized red blood cells (PRBCs) to endothelial cells and subsequent accumulation in the microvasculature are pivotal events in the pathogenesis of falciparum malaria. During intraerythrocytic development, numerous proteins exported from the parasite associate with the RBC membrane skeleton but the precise function of many of these proteins remain unknown. Their cellular location, however, suggests that some may play a role in adhesion.

There is indirect evidence that heightened exposure to early androgen may increase the probability that a girl will develop a homosexual orientation in adulthood. One such putative marker of early androgen exposure is the ratio of the length of the index finger (2D) to the ring finger (4D), which is smaller in male humans than in females, and is smaller in lesbians than in heterosexual women. Yet there is also evidence that women may have different sexual orientations at different times in their lives, which suggests that other influences on female sexual orientation, presumably social, are at work as well.

Red blood cells (RBCs) parasitized by Plasmodium falciparum are rigid and poorly deformable and show abnormal circulatory behavior. During parasite development, knob-associated histidine-rich protein (KAHRP) and P falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein 3 (PfEMP3) are exported from the parasite and interact with the RBC membrane skeleton. Using micropipette aspiration, the membrane shear elastic modulus of RBCs infected with transgenic parasites (with kahrp or pfemp3 genes deleted) was measured to determine the contribution of these proteins to the increased rigidity of parasitized RBCs (PRBCs).

The asexual stage of malaria parasites of the genus Plasmodium invade red blood cells of various species including humans. After parasite invasion, red blood cells progressively acquire a new set of properties and are converted into more typical, although still simpler, eukaryotic cells by the appearance of new structures in the red blood cell cytoplasm, and new proteins at the red blood cell membrane skeleton. The red blood cell undergoes striking morphological alterations and its rheological properties are considerably altered, manifesting as red blood cells with increased membrane rigidity, reduced deformability and increased adhesiveness for a number of other cells including the vascular endothelium.

We investigated whether the posterodorsal nucleus of the medial amygdala (MePD) and the posteromedial nucleus of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BSTpm) undergo structural changes in response to photoperiod or social environment in the Siberian hamster, a seasonally breeding rodent. Adult male hamsters were either kept in long days (LD; 15:9 h light:dark) from birth or were transferred at 12-16 weeks of age to short days (SD; 8:16) and housed with a male conspecific for 11 weeks. Other males were transferred to SD but were housed with an unrelated female conspecific from LD.
