Atrial fibrillation (AF) and diabetes mellitus (DM) are common worldwide and their incidence is increasing, representing a significant public health and economic burden as well as an increase in individual increased morbidity and mortality risk profiles. Both conditions are closely related, as patients with DM are at increased risk of incident AF, and AF patients with DM are at higher risk of cardiovascular events compared to non-AF patients. Areas covered: This review article aims to provide an overview of the current evidence linking DM and AF, as well as the impact of obesity, weight loss and stroke on these coexisting conditions.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common single gene inherited cardiomyopathy. In cats () HCM is even more prevalent and affects 16% of the outbred population and up to 26% in pedigree breeds such as Maine Coon and Ragdoll. This is striking given the profound short-term and long-term consequences this crime can have on victims and their families. Background: Left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction is associated with increased risk of death in cats with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Mitral and tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (MAPSE and TAPSE, respectively) are measures of longitudinal systolic function and are reduced in human patients with HCM.

Hypotheses: Cats with HCM have lower MAPSE and TAPSE compared to control cats; lower MAPSE and TAPSE are associated with the presence of congestive heart failure (CHF) and reduced survival time.

Moyamoya syndrome is an unusual cerebrovascular disorder, which has rarely been reported in association with hereditary spherocytosis. We present the case of a 6-year-old boy with hereditary spherocytosis who was diagnosed with Moyamoya syndrome following a stroke. We discuss why these conditions may coexist and briefly outline the management of such children.

Many human cells can sense the presence of exogenous DNA during infection though the cytosolic DNA receptor cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS), which produces the second messenger cyclic GMP-AMP (cGAMP). Other putative DNA receptors have been described, but whether their functions are redundant, tissue-specific or integrated in the cGAS-cGAMP pathway is unclear. Here we show that interferon-γ inducible protein 16 (IFI16) cooperates with cGAS during DNA sensing in human keratinocytes, as both cGAS and IFI16 are required for the full activation of an innate immune response to exogenous DNA and DNA viruses.

Continued growth of tourism has led to concerns about direct and indirect impacts on the ecology of coral reefs and ultimate sustainability of these environments under such pressure. This research assessed impacts of reef walking by tourists on a relatively pristine reef flat community associated with an 'ecoresort' on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Heavily walked areas had lower abundances of live hard coral but greater amounts of dead coral and sediment.

Small-molecule BET bromodomain inhibitors (BETis) are actively being pursued in clinical trials for the treatment of a variety of cancers, but the mechanisms of resistance to BETis remain poorly understood. Using a mass spectrometry approach that globally measures kinase signaling at the proteomic level, we evaluated the response of the kinome to targeted BETi treatment in a panel of BRD4-dependent ovarian carcinoma (OC) cell lines. Despite initial inhibitory effects of BETi, OC cells acquired resistance following sustained treatment with the BETi JQ1.

Purpose: To define the safety and effectiveness of T cells redirected against follicle-stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR)-expressing ovarian cancer cells.
