White rot fungi can degrade lignin and improve the nutritional value of highly lignified biomass for ruminants. We screened for excellent fungi-biomass combinations by investigating the improvement of digestibility of wheat straw, barley straw, oat straw, rapeseed straw, miscanthus, new reed, spent reed from thatched roofs, and cocoa shells after colonisation by Ceriporiopsis subvermispora (CS), Lentinula edodes (LE), and Pleurotus eryngii (PE) (indicated by increased in vitro gas production [IVGP]). First, growth was evaluated for three fungi on all types of biomass, over a period of 17 days in race tubes.

So far, such treatment appears to be time-consuming and improvement has been modest. In previous work, we observed within three white rot species that there is modest () or low ( and ) variation in fiber degradation in wheat straw during seven weeks of incubation.

Introduction: There are well-documented racial and ethnic disparities in mortality after cancer in the general population, but less is known about whether disparities also exist in disaster-exposed populations.
Methods: We conducted a longitudinal cohort study of 4341 enrollees in the World Trade Center Health Registry (WTCHR) with a first-ever primary invasive cancer diagnosis after 9/11/2001 and followed through 2020. We examined associations of race and ethnicity with all-cause mortality risk and cause-specific mortality risk using multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression models and Fine and Gray's proportional sub-distribution hazards models, respectively.
Fermentation of dietary and endogenous protein in the hindgut is generally considered detrimental to the health of pigs. We investigated the in vitro fermentation potential of porcine endogenous protein in ileal digesta and colonic mucus, using a N-free buffer with an excess of fermentable carbohydrates. Urea, whey protein isolate (WPI, positive control), WPI hydrolysate (WPIH), and combinations of the latter two were used to validate the assay.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani ordered the emergency evacuation of Lower Manhattan below Canal Street, but not all residents evacuated. Previous studies showed that those who did not evacuate had a higher incidence of newly diagnosed asthma.

Purpose: Little is known about colorectal cancer screening in 9/11 World Trade Center (WTC)-exposed populations. We utilized survey data from the WTC Health Registry (WTCHR) to examine associations between enrollees' characteristics and colorectal cancer (CRC) screening.
Methods: We studied 22,061 enrollees aged 50-75 who completed the WTCHR follow-up survey in 2015-2016.
Low rates of blood lead level screening among young children persist as a public health issue in the United States, including in Texas where levels remain below the national average. This article describes a multiyear, multipartner initiative aimed at increasing screening rates through a creative, community-informed social media campaign. Interviews with parents, providers, and state health department staff revealed a common perception that lead poisoning was a relic of the past.

They have long been thought to perform distinct functions, with the V1 supporting the perception of visual features and the SC regulating orienting to visual inputs. However, growing evidence suggests that the SC supports the perception of many of the same visual features traditionally associated with the V1.

Peripartum people represent a unique and vulnerable subset of homicide victims. This study aimed to understand the risk factors for peripartum homicide.

Few reports have been published on the outcomes of this program since its implementation.
Methods: The medical and billing records for the two AMCT3 embedded trauma surgeons at the single medical center were retrospectively reviewed for care provided during August 2021 through July 2022.
Introduction: One of the significant complications of operative liver trauma is intra-abdominal abscesses (IAA). The objective of this study was to determine risk factors associated with postoperative IAA in surgical patients with major operative liver trauma.
Methods: A retrospective multi-institutional study was performed at 13 Level 1 and Level 2 trauma centers from 2012 to 2021.
Studies of the health impacts of the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks on New York City's (NYC's) World Trade Center (WTC) towers have been hindered by imprecise estimates of exposure. We sought to identify potential biomarkers of WTC exposure by measuring trace and major metal concentrations in lung tissues from WTC-exposed individuals and less exposed community controls. We also investigated associations of lung tissue metal concentrations with self-reported exposure and respiratory symptoms.

We assessed cancer incidence in WTC workers by self-reported race and ethnicity, and compared it to population figures for NYS.
Methods: A total of 61,031 WTC workers enrolled between September 11, 2001 and January 10, 2012 were followed to December 31, 2015.

Using spirometric case definitions, we examined that association in the largest WTC occupational surveillance cohort.
Methods: We examined the relation between early arrival at the 2001 WTC disaster site (when dust and fumes exposures were most intense) and COPD and ACO in workers with at least one good quality spirometry with bronchodilator response testing between 2002 and 2019, and no physician-diagnosed COPD before 9/11/2001.
Background: The management of major liver trauma continues to evolve in trauma centers across the US with increasing use of minimally invasive techniques. Data on the outcomes of these procedures remain minimal. The objective of this study was to evaluate patient complications after perioperative hepatic angioembolization as an adjunct to management of major operative liver trauma.

Objectives: Prior publications on pediatric firearm-related injuries have emphasized significant social disparities. The pandemic has heightened a variety of these societal stresses. We sought to evaluate how we must now adapt our injury prevention strategies.

Vulnerability indices have been used in other fields to better characterize and identify at-risk populations during crises, but no tool currently exists to predict where rates of firearm violence are highest. We sought to develop and validate a novel machine-learning algorithm, the Firearm Violence Vulnerability Index (FVVI), to forecast community risk for shooting incidents, fill data gaps, and enhance prevention efforts.

A poor precaecal digestion is expected to increase protein fermentation (PF), as more proteins are likely to enter the caeca. It is unknown if the undigested protein that enters the caeca differs in fermentability depending on their ingredient source.

We examined the association of post-9/11 rheumatoid arthritis (RA) diagnosis with opioid pain medication overuse among enrollees in the World Trade Center Health Registry (WTCHR). Opioid overuse was defined as the self-reported intake of prescribed opioids at a higher dosage or more often than directed in the last 12 months on one of the two most recent WTCHR surveys (2015-2016, 2020-2021). Post-9/11 RA was ascertained through self-reports and subsequently validated following medical record release by the enrollees' physicians or medical records review.

Dynamic and volatile environments require that animals learn complex behavioral strategies to obtain the necessary nutritive substances. While this has been classically viewed in terms of homeostatic regulation, recent theoretical work proposed that such strategies result from reinforcement learning processes.
