Management of serious complications in intra-abdominal desmoid-type fibromatosis.

Background: Desmoid fibromatosis (DF) is a rare and locally infiltrative monoclonal fibroblastic proliferation arising from connective tissues, with lack of metastatic potential. About 10% of all DF cases are intra-abdominally sited. Complications in this site, due to the locally infiltrative nature of the disease, may be severe and potentially life threatening.

Restoration and Enhancement of Historical Stereo Photos.

Restoration of digital visual media acquired from repositories of historical photographic and cinematographic material is of key importance for the preservation, study and transmission of the legacy of past cultures to the coming generations. In this paper, a fully automatic approach to the digital restoration of historical stereo photographs is proposed, referred to as Stacked Median Restoration plus (SMR+). The approach exploits the content redundancy in stereo pairs for detecting and fixing scratches, dust, dirt spots and many other defects in the original images, as well as improving contrast and illumination.

MRIs at baseline, 6 and 12 months of chemotherapy and at treatment withdrawal were retrospectively reviewed, contouring the tumor lesion and measuring diameters, volume, and mean T2-signal intensity (normalized to muscle) changes.

Vaccines in Children with Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Brief Review.

Incidence of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), including Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), is increasing worldwide. Children with IBDs have a dysfunctional immune system and they are frequently treated with immunomodulating drugs and biological therapy, which significantly impair immune system functions and lead to an increased risk of infections. Vaccines are essential to prevent at least part of these infections and this explains why strict compliance to the immunization guidelines specifically prepared for IBD patients is strongly recommended.

Pharmacogenetic-Guided Treatment of Depression: Real-World Clinical Applications, Challenges, and Perspectives.

Depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide and, despite the availability of numerous antidepressants, the lack of standardized criteria to apply personalized prescription is still a major issue. Pharmacogenetic (PGx) markers in cytochrome P450 (CYP450) genes are already usable to guide antidepressant choice/titration according to clinical guidelines; they are an important step toward personalized psychiatry as they can reduce the time to identify an effective and tolerated treatment. Clinical application is still limited due to the financial and organizational challenges, but the number of services providing genotyping of pharmacogenes is increasing, with encouraging projections of cost-effectiveness.

Incidence of SARS-CoV-2 in people with cystic fibrosis in Europe between February and June 2020.

Background: Viral infections can cause significant morbidity in cystic fibrosis (CF). The current Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic could therefore have a serious impact on the health of people with CF (pwCF).

Methods: We used the 38-country European Cystic Fibrosis Society Patient Registry (ECFSPR) to collect case data about pwCF and SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Objective: To describe the symptoms and clinical course of SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF).

Methods: We carried out a prospective multicentre cohort study based on 32 CF centres and 6597 patients. Centres were contacted to collect baseline and follow-up data of patients who reported symptoms suggestive of COVID-19 or who had contact with a positive/suspected case between the end of February and July 2020.

Adiponectin predicts poor response to antidepressant drugs in major depressive disorder.

Objective: Produced by adipocytes, adiponectin crosses the blood-brain barrier to bind with specific receptors in the hypothalamus, brainstem, hippocampus, and cortex. In patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), circulating levels of adiponectin inversely related with antidepressant response to ketamine, and predicted a better response to multi-target drug combinations than to escitalopram. We investigated the effect of adiponectin on response to antidepressants in a naturalistic setting.

Vaccination is one of the greatest achievements in biomedical research preventing death and morbidity in many infectious diseases through the induction of pathogen-specific humoral and cellular immune responses. Microplastics have been a global concern due to their potential and widespread risks to organisms and environments. In this study, we investigated the abundance, distribution, and characteristics of microplastics (MPs) in the surface waters of the Bahía Blanca Estuary (BBE), specifically in its inner and middle zone. The results showed the dominant shape of MPs were fibers, being black, transparent, and blue the main colors.

Background: The efficacy and safety of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) for the treatment of liver disease associated with cystic fibrosis (CF) are under discussion, and clinical practice varies among centers. The study aimed at evaluating if the incidence of severe liver disease differs between CF centers routinely prescribing or not prescribing UDCA.

Methods: We carried out a retrospective multicenter cohort study including 1591 CF patients (1192 patients from UDCA-prescribing centers and 399 from non-prescribing centers) born between 1990 and 2007 and followed from birth up to 31 December 2016.
