Cranial vault reconstructions are a common craniofacial procedure utilized to treat chronically elevated intracranial pressure and its sequelae for children with craniosynostosis. These surgeries often involve split-thickness autologous grafts to facilitate intracranial volume expansion. The hinge craniotomy was developed by neurosurgeons in the early 2000s as an alternative to the hemicraniectomy to allow for greater space and simplified re-securing of the bone flap.

However, the present lack of effective treatment options for TBI, despite decades of research, shows the critical need for alternative methods for screening new drug candidates with neuroprotective properties. Because natural products have been a leading source of new therapeutic agents for human diseases, we used an in vitro model of stretch injury to rapidly assess pro-survival effects of three bioactive compounds, two isolated from natural products (clovanemagnolol [CM], vinaxanthone [VX]) and the third, a dietary compound (pterostilbene [PT]) found in blueberries.

Beginning several years ago as a device that produced an image with only a few pixels, virtual reality is now able to generate detailed, three-dimensional, and interactive images. Furthermore, these images can be used to provide quantitative data when acting as a simulator or a rehabilitation device.

Imaging demonstrated a minor amount of subarachnoid blood, and a follow-up computed tomography angiogram revealed a spinal dural arteriovenous fistula (SDAVF) located at C2-3. The C2-3 radicular artery proximal to the fistula feeder anastomosed with the anterior spinal artery, challenging the safety of embolization.

These diseases are difficult to definitively treat with traditional radiotherapy without injuring adjacent brain parenchyma. The physical properties of ion radiotherapy allows for treatment plans that avoid damaging critical neural structures.

One expense is increased operative duration, which leads to poorer patient outcomes. Although other studies have assessed the effect of one resident assisting, none have investigated two residents; thus, we sought to investigate if two residents versus one scrubbed-in impacted operative time, estimated blood loss (EBL), and length-of-stay (LOS).

Cefazolin is typically first-line due to its lower toxicity profile and specificity for gram-positives such as skin commensals, while vancomycin is often reserved for patients with cephalosporin or penicillin allergies. However, one randomized clinical trial demonstrated superiority of vancomycin for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunt insertions at a hospital with a high prevalence of methicillin-resistance Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

The viruses (n = 174) were characterized as to major antigenic group (group A or B) by a PCR-based assay. Group A RS viruses were dominant the first 2 years, followed by a year with group B dominance (ratios of group A to group B viruses for epidemic periods, 56/4 for 1993-1994, 42/3 for 1994-1995, and 19/50 for 1995-1996).

This finding prompted the authors to conduct a randomized prospective trial of a referral form and return mailer in three rural primary care clinics associated with a university medical center. The use of a return mailer increased the percentage of consultant feedback from 39 percent to 60 percent, a highly significant increase.
