Purpose: Severely myopic eyes have been associated with high posterior capsule opacification (PCO) incidence. Although it has been reported that myopic eyes have weaker or more delayed capsule adhesion than emmetropic eyes, it is unclear whether/how dioptric power and posterior curvature of IOLs affect IOLs' affinity for the posterior lens capsule (PLC) and their PCO potential.
Methods: To investigate this, acrylic foldable IOLs with increasing dioptric power of 6.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Injuries to the glenoid labrum have been recognized as a source of joint pain and discomfort, which may be associated with the inflammatory responses that lead to the deterioration of labral tissue. However, it is unclear whether the torn labrum prompts mast cell (MC) activation, resulting in synovial inflammatory responses that lead to labral tissue degeneration.
Purpose: To determine the potential influence of activated MC on synovial inflammatory responses and subsequent labral tissue degeneration and shoulder function deterioration in a rat model by monitoring MC behavior and sequential inflammatory responses within the synovial tissue and labral tissue after injury, suture repair, and MC stabilizer administration.
We previously developed a computer-assisted image analysis algorithm to detect and quantify the microscopic features of rodent progressive cardiomyopathy (PCM) in rat heart histologic sections and validated the results with a panel of five veterinary toxicologic pathologists using a multinomial logistic model. In this study, we assessed both the inter-rater and intra-rater agreement of the pathologists and compared pathologists' ratings to the artificial intelligence (AI)-predicted scores. This may contribute to differential health outcomes in Black women such as increased risk of breast cancer, cardiometabolic outcomes, adverse birth outcomes, and uterine fibroids.
Objective: Classify distinct PCP use patterns across multiple types of products and examine how patterns vary by socio-demographic characteristics.
Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO), the most frequent complication of cataract surgery, is caused by the infiltration and proliferation of lens epithelial cells (LECs) at the interface between the intraocular lens (IOL) and posterior lens capsule (PLC). According to the "no space, no cells, no PCO" theory, high affinity (or adhesion force) between the IOL and PLC would decrease the IOL: PLC interface space, hinder LEC migration, and thus reduce PCO formation. To test this hypothesis, an in vitro hemisphere-shaped simulated PLC (sPLC) was made to mimic the human IOL: PLC physical interactions and to assess their influence on LEC responses.

We describe two cases of intraocular neuroectodermal embryonal tumors, formerly primitive neuroectodermal tumors, in young rabbits. Histologically, both tumors exhibited prominent rosette or pseudorosettes, consistent with the histomorphology seen in human tumors.

Materials And Methods: We studied the spread of Ebola virus and obtained a system of equations comprising of eighteen equations which completely described the transmission of Ebola Virus in a population where control measures were incorporated and a major source of contacting the disease which is the traditional washing of dead bodies was also incorporated.
Glenoid labral tears occur with repetitive dislocation events and are common injuries observed in shoulder arthroscopic procedures. Although surgery can restore shoulder anatomy, repair is associated with poor clinical outcomes, which may be attributed to the poor regenerative capability of glenoid labral fibrocartilage. Thus, this study was designed to assess whether in situ tissue regeneration via biomolecule-stimulated recruitment of progenitor cells is a viable approach for the regeneration of labral tears.

We sought to measure the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the volumes of stroke admissions, intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), IVT, and mechanical thrombectomy over a 1-year period at the onset of the pandemic (March 1, 2020, to February 28, 2021) compared with the immediately preceding year (March 1, 2019, to February 29, 2020).

Objective: Growing evidence suggests increasing frequencies of autoimmunity and autoimmune diseases, but findings are limited by the lack of systematic data and evolving approaches and definitions. This study was undertaken to investigate whether the prevalence of antinuclear antibodies (ANA), the most common biomarker of autoimmunity, changed over a recent 25-year span in the US.
Methods: Serum ANA were measured by standard indirect immunofluorescence assays on HEp-2 cells in 13,519 participants age ≥12 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, with approximately one-third from each of 3 time periods: 1988-1991, 1999-2004, and 2011-2012.
The increasing prevalence and severity of invasive fungal infections (IFIs), especially in immunocompromised populations, has amplified the need for rapid diagnosis of fungal pathogens. Radiotracers derived from d-amino acids (DAAs) show promise as bacterial-specific positron emission tomography (PET) imaging agents due to their preferential consumption by bacteria and largely nonutilization by hosts. Unlike mammals, fungi can utilize external DAAs including d-glutamine for their growth by rapidly upregulating DAA oxidases.

Chemotherapy plays an essential role in OS treatment, potentially doubling 5-year event-free survival if tumour necrosis can be stimulated. The canonical Wnt inhibitor Dickkopf-1 (Dkk-1) enhances OS survival in part through upregulation of aldehyde-dehydrogenase-1A1 which neutralises reactive oxygen species originating from nutritional stress and chemotherapeutic challenge.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjective: To measure the global impact of COVID-19 pandemic on volumes of IV thrombolysis (IVT), IVT transfers, and stroke hospitalizations over 4 months at the height of the pandemic (March 1 to June 30, 2020) compared with 2 control 4-month periods.
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, observational, retrospective study across 6 continents, 70 countries, and 457 stroke centers. Diagnoses were identified by their ICD-10 codes or classifications in stroke databases.
Since most d-amino acids (DAAs) are utilized by bacterial cells but not by mammalian eukaryotic hosts, recently DAA-based molecular imaging strategies have been extensively explored for noninvasively differentiating bacterial infections from the host's inflammatory responses. Given glutamine's pivotal role in bacterial survival, cell growth, biofilm formation, and even virulence, here we report a new positron emission tomography (PET) imaging approach using d-5-[C]glutamine (d-[5-C]-Gln) for potential clinical assessment of bacterial infection through a comparative study with its l-isomer counterpart, l-[5-C]-Gln. In both control and infected mice, l-[5-C]-Gln had substantially higher uptake levels than d-[5-C]-Gln in most organs except the kidneys, showing the expected higher use of l-[5-C]-Gln by mammalian tissues and more efficient renal excretion of d-[5-C]-Gln.
