Background/objectives: Arboviruses, transmitted by mosquitoes like , pose significant public health challenges globally, particularly in tropical regions. The rapid spread and adaptation of viruses such as Dengue, Zika, and Chikungunya have emphasized the need for innovative control methods. Essential oils from plants, such as (Gardner) Sch.

Purpose: In patients with Primary Hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) vitamin D deficiency has been associated with more severe presentations. Our aim was to investigate the effects of Vitamin D supplementation on mineral homeostasis and related hormones in individuals with and without PHPT.

Methods: Individuals with and without PHPT (CTRL) received 14,000 IU/week of oral vitamin D for 12 weeks.

Objective: To estimate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and severe deficiency in children and adolescents, in a large Brazilian sample.

Methodology: Results of 413,988 25(OH)D measurements in children and adolescents aged 0 to 18 years collected between 01/2014 and 10/2018 were obtained from the database of a Clinical Laboratory. In this population, 25 hydroxyvitamin D concentrations below 20 ng/mL are considered deficient, and below 12 ng/mL as severe deficiency.

Infectious and Parasitic Diseases (IPD) remain a challenge for medicine due to several interconnected reasons, such as antimicrobial resistance (AMR). American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL) is an overlooked IPD causing persistent skin ulcers that are challenging to heal, resulting in disfiguring scars. Moreover, it has the potential to extend from the skin to the mucous membranes of the nose, mouth, and throat in both humans and various animals.

Purpose: We aimed to study the relationship between aging and increased parathyroid hormone (PTH) values.

Methods: We performed a retrospective cross-sectional study with data from patients who underwent outpatient PTH measurements performed by a second-generation electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. We included patients over 18 years of age with simultaneous PTH, calcium, and creatinine measurements and 25-OHD measured within 30 days.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the association between 25OHD (total, bioavailable and free) with bone mass and microarchitecture among primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) patients and controls.

Subjects And Methods: Sixty-four patients in the preoperative period of PHPT and 63 matched controls, who had not taken vitamin D in the last three months. To calculate the bioavailable and free 25OHD, the genetic variants of the vitamin D-binding protein (DBP) were determined.

Trabecular bone score (TBS) is an indirect and noninvasive measure of bone quality. A low TBS indicates degraded bone microarchitecture, predicts osteoporotic fracture, and is partially independent of clinical risk factors and bone mineral density (BMD). There is substantial evidence supporting the use of TBS to assess vertebral, hip, and major osteoporotic fracture risk in postmenopausal women, as well as to assess hip and major osteoporotic fracture risk in men aged > 50 years.

Dengue fever is a reemerging disease of global concern among health authorities due to its high rate of proliferation. In 2019, Brazil registered its second-highest dengue mortality rate since 1998, with approximately 754 deaths and 1.5 million probable cases.

Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics are areas in pharmacology related to different themes in the pharmaceutical sciences, including therapeutic drug monitoring and different stages of drug development. Although the knowledge of these disciplines is essential, they have historically been treated separately. While pharmacokinetics was limited to describing the time course of plasma concentrations after administering a drug-dose, pharmacodynamics describes the intensity of the response to these concentrations.

Background: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is associated with increased fracture risk, despite similar or greater BMD compared to nondiabetics. TBS predicts fracture risk in T2D and nondiabetics. However, increased abdominal thickness, a common feature in T2D, may reduce TBS values.

Introduction: To support the development of practices and guidelines that might help to reduce adverse events related to human factors, we aimed to study the response and perception by members of a cardiovascular surgery team of various error-driven or adverse features that might arise in the operating room (OR).

Methods: A previously validated Disruptions in Surgery Index (DiSI) questionnaire was completed by individuals working together in a cardiovascular surgical unit. Results were submitted to reliability analysis by calculating the Cronbach's alpha coefficient.

Objectives: The goal of this study was to describe and evaluate our simulation training program on biological models for the cardiovascular surgery residency program at our institution.

Material And Methods: Since 2016, with the purpose to develop better practical performance and evaluate the improvement of resident's surgical skills, a simulation training program was implemented, composed of some elemental procedures in cardiovascular surgery. It was established with one wet lab session weekly lasting 2 h, coached by two expert cardiovascular surgeons.

In recent years the immunomodulatory actions of vitamin D, a steroid hormone, have been extensively studied. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the question arose as to 25(OH)D status would be related to susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection, since several studies pointed out a higher prevalence and severity of the disease in populations with low levels of 25(OH)D. Thus, we investigated the 25(OH)D levels in adults "Detected" positive for SARS CoV-2 by RT-PCR (reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction) test, and in negative controls, "not Detected", using the Fleury Group's examination database, in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • * Methods: Twenty-nine patients were monitored preoperatively and for two years post-MVR, focusing on mitral valve imaging and the impact of surgical intervention without ring annuloplasty.
  • * Results: Significant decreases in the MA's circumferences and areas were observed immediately after surgery, with these changes remaining stable at the two-year mark, while the mobility of the MA was preserved.

Background: Mohs micrographic surgery is worldwide used for treating skin cancers. After obtaining tumor-free margins, choosing the most appropriate type of closure can be challenging.

Objectives: Our aim was to associate type of surgical reconstructions after Mohs micrographic surgery with the characteristics of the tumors as histological subtype, anatomical localization and especially number of surgical stages to achieve complete excision of the tumour.

Dizygostemon riparius (Plantaginaceae) is a new aromatic herbaceous species occurring in Maranhão State, Brazil. It is used as flavorings to remove domestic animal parasites and preventing mosquitoes. GC and GC/MS were used to analyze its essential oil, and a larvicidal bioassay was performed against Aedes albopictus larvae, a vector of arboviruses in Brazil.

Background/aim: Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is the most prevalent type of cancer in adults. Surgery remains the golden-standard treatment for this disease. Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS), a surgical technique, is based on the three-dimensional histopathological examination of the margin and surgical bed, layer by layer, in the excised tissue allowing for the determination of the location of the residual tumor, for its complete excision, with high cure rates and preservation of the unaffected tissue.
