Polypyrrole-coated needle as an electrospray emitter for ambient mass spectrometry.

Polypyrrole (PPy) is a polymer widely used as an extraction phase due to its ability to perform intermolecular interactions with the analyte, such as acid-base, π-π, dipole-dipole, hydrophobic, and hydrogen bonding. In this manuscript, we report the coating of a stainless steel needle with a PPy film for analyte extraction and subsequent analysis by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) under ambient and open-air conditions. The method, named PPy-ESI-MS, was optimized for analysis of 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA) and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) in synthetic urine.

Influence of probiotics on biofilm formation and diversity of bacteria colonising crop sorghum ensiled with unsalable vegetables.

The objective of this study was to characterise in situ digestion kinetics and bacterial colonisation of crop sorghum ensiled with unsalable carrot or pumpkin at 0, 20 or 40% dry matter (DM). Silages with or without the application of a commercial probiotic were incubated in situ for 0, 3, 6, 9, 24 and 48 h. Calculation of in situ digestion kinetics was conducted for DM, organic matter and neutral detergent fibre (aNDF).

Endophthalmitis following combined cataract extraction and placement of an iStent trabecular bypass device.

Purpose: To report a case of post-operative endophthalmitis following combined cataract extraction and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery with placement of the iStent drainage device.

Observation: An 87-year-old woman with a nuclear sclerotic cataract and primary open angle glaucoma underwent elective phacoemulsification cataract extraction with iStent placement. Surgery was complicated only by the inability to properly place the second iStent despite several attempts.

Background: In view of the potential immunosuppressive and regenerative properties of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), we investigated whether transplantation of adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ASC) could be used to control the granulomatous reaction in the liver of mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni after Praziquantel (PZQ) treatment.

Methodology/prinicpal Findings: C57BL/6 mice infected with S. mansoni were treated with PZQ and transplanted intravenously with ASC from uninfected mice.

Costus stripe mosaic virus, a tentative new member of the genus Potyvirus.

Morphological, biological, serological, and molecular tests underpin the description of costus stripe mosaic virus (CoSMV) as a new member of the genus Potyvirus, family Potyviridae. Found affecting the native ornamental Costus spiralis in Brazil, the pathogen showed a severely restricted natural and experimental host range. Excluding the poly(A) tail, the CoSMV genome contains a large open reading frame (ORF) of 9,446 nucleotides that encodes a polyprotein with 3,046 amino acids, which is potentially cleaved into ten products, and a small ORF (77 amino acids) knows as PIPO.

This paper studies a new variation of this problem, called the Coverage Location Problem with Overlap Control (CLPOC). This problem models real contexts related to overloaded attendance systems, which require coverage zones with overlaps.

Background: Optimal maternal metabolism during pregnancy is essential for healthy fetal growth and development. Chronic exercise is shown to positively affect metabolism, predominantly demonstrated in nonpregnant populations.

Objective: To determine the effects of aerobic exercise on maternal metabolic biomarkers during pregnancy, with expected lower levels of glucose, insulin, and lipids among exercise-trained pregnant women.

 Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an acute infection caused by the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) and it is highly transmissible, especially through respiratory droplets. To prepare the health system for the care of these patients also led to a restriction in the activity of several medical specialties. The Artisan Minas Cheese (AMC) is the oldest and most traditional Brazilian cheese, it is produced in several regions of the state of Minas Gerais, such as the Serro region. The most striking features of the AMC-Serro are the use of raw milk and natural bacteria from the whey, popularly known as , as well as the use of the rind washing process. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the proteolysis of the AMC-Serro from three different producers, during 60 days of maturation, and to relate the proteolysis to the producing farms, the production season and the rind washing during ripening.

Kikuchi-Fujimoto Syndrome: A Rare Entity to Consider.

Introduction: Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) is a rare, benign, necrotizing lymphadenitis of unknown aetiology with good prognosis. It is characterized by cervical lymphadenopathy, nocturnal diaphoresis and fever. Surgical excision of the adenopathy, histopathological study and immunophenotyping are crucial for diagnosis.

Background: Metaldehyde is a toxic pesticide used mainly as a molluscicide, responsible for intoxication and deaths in both humans and animals. Accidental exposure to metaldehyde in dogs is considered rare, but severe. Data concerning clinical and veterinary forensic toxicology are largely incomplete, especially regarding case reports in dogs.

Eco-Epidemiological Evidence of the Transmission of Avian and Human Influenza A Viruses in Wild Pigs in Campeche, Mexico.

Influenza, a zoonosis caused by various influenza A virus subtypes, affects a wide range of species, including humans. Pig cells express both sialyl-α-2,3-Gal and sialyl-α-2,6-Gal receptors, which make them susceptible to infection by avian and human viruses, respectively. To date, it is not known whether wild pigs in Mexico are affected by influenza virus subtypes, nor whether this would make them a potential risk of influenza transmission to humans.
