Multimodal nanoparticle analysis enabled by a polymer electrolyte nanopore combined with nanoimpact electrochemistry.

Nanopores are emerging as a powerful tool for the analysis and characterization of nanoparticles at the single entity level. Here, we report that a PEG-based polymer electrolyte present inside the nanopore enables the enhanced detection of nanoparticles at low ionic strength. We develop a numerical model that recapitulates the electrical response of the glass nanopore system, revealing the response to be sensitive to the position of the polymer electrolyte interface.

Applications of Grounded Theory Methodology to Investigate Hearing Loss: A Methodological Qualitative Systematic Review With Developed Guidelines.

Objectives: Qualitative methodologies are commonly adopted in hearing loss research. Grounded theory methodology is increasingly used to establish novel theories explaining experiences related to hearing loss. Establishing and improving the quality of grounded theory studies has been emphasized as critical to ensuring theoretical trustworthiness.

Applications of qualitative grounded theory methodology to investigate hearing loss: protocol for a qualitative systematic review.

Introduction: Hearing loss is a chronic condition affecting 12 million individuals in the UK. People with hearing loss regularly experience difficulties interacting in everyday conversations. These difficulties in communication can result in a person with hearing loss withdrawing from social situations and becoming isolated.

Challenging oppressive practice in mental health: The development and evaluation of a video based resource for student nurses.

Some aspects of mental health nursing practice are inherently oppressive; for example detention in hospital or forced medication under restraint. What is more challenging is thinking about oppression in the context of everyday mental health nursing work, such as nursing handovers, and the impact this has on the quality and safety of service user care. An online resource was co-developed for use (via a workshop) with student mental health nurses to assist them with questioning their own and others practice in relation to oppression as exhibited in the nursing handover.

An exploration of the practice, policy and legislative issues of the specialist area of nursing people with intellectual disability: A scoping review.

The specialist field of intellectual disability nursing has been subjected to a number of changes since the move towards deinstitutionalisation from the 1970s. Government policies sought to change the nature of the disability workforce from what was labelled as a medicalised approach, towards a more socially oriented model of support. Decades on however, many nurses who specialise in the care of people with intellectual disability are still employed.

Physical activity and learning disability.

The inclusion of people with learning disabilities in sporting activities promotes a number of positive outcomes. These may include opportunities for social inclusion, the creation of positive role models for other people with learning disabilities, the opportunity to present people with learning disabilities in valued social roles to a global community, sharing of common interests and experiences, and social and competitive rewards. There is also the potential for positive physical and mental health outcomes.

Epidemiology of rhinitis: allergic and nonallergic.

In summary, the epidemiological data and characterization of allergic and nonallergic rhinitis has been reviewed. Chronic rhinitis symptoms are among the most common problems presenting to physicians. When approaching this problem the diagnostic challenge is to determine the etiology, specifically whether it is allergic, nonallergic, or perhaps an overlap of both conditions.

Learning to DISCERN online: applying an appraisal tool to health websites in a workshop setting.

This study examined the application of DISCERN-validated criteria for judging the quality of printed information on treatment-to online health information in a workshop setting. A survey was conducted amongst 57 participants attending DISCERN Online workshops. Participants were health information users-health care and information providers, consumers (patients/carers), and consumer representatives.

A 5-star system for rating the quality of information based on DISCERN.

Objective: To develop an explicit scheme for calculating a 5-star quality rating for consumer health information, and to test if there is good agreement be tween this and the final DISCERN quality question.

Design: A sample of 15 consumers and health professionals rated 26 health information leaflets covering a broad range of conditions and treatments using two new 5-star-rating schemes and the existing DISCERN final quality rating. Each scheme is based on the 15 DISCERN criteria, but the 5-star schemes provide more explicit methods for summarizing overall quality.

DISCERN: an instrument for judging the quality of written consumer health information on treatment choices.

Objective: To develop a short instrument, called DISCERN, which will enable patients and information providers to judge the quality of written information about treatment choices. DISCERN will also facilitate the production of new, high quality, evidence-based consumer health information.

Design: An expert panel, representing a range of expertise in consumer health information, generated criteria from a random sample of information for three medical conditions with varying degrees of evidence: myocardial infarction, endometriosis, and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Early postoperative otorrhea after tympanostomy tube placement: a comparison of topical ophthalmic and otic drops.

In a retrospective review of the incidence of early postoperative otorrhea, we compared cortisporin otic suspension with sulfacetamide/prednisolone ophthalmic drops and found them to be approximately equally effective. The beneficial effect of topical otic and ophthalmic antibiotic drops after tympanoplasty tube placement has already been well documented. It is therefore suggested that the potentially more comfortable and theoretically less ototoxic ophthalmic drop be used to decrease the incidence of early postoperative otorrhea.

A problematic counter-regulation experiment: implications for the link between dietary restraint and overeating.

The current study failed to find any evidence of laboratory counter-regulation amongst restrained eaters given a preload, regardless of the measures of dietary restraint used to classify subjects, including dieting status on the day of the study. Furthermore, there was no evidence to suggest that high restrainers characteristically overeat or experience a sense of loss of control over eating in naturalistic settings. These findings indicate that the link between dietary restraint and overeating or bulimic episodes is, at most, a weak one.

Recurrent tonsillitis. The role of Chlamydia and Mycoplasma.

The core tissue microflora of 40 patients who underwent tonsillectomies were examined with cultures, DNA probe tests, enzyme immunoassays, and direct immunofluorescence antibody tests for Chlamydia and Mycoplasma. We believe this is the largest and most accurate prospective study that has examined the role of Chlamydia and Mycoplasma in the core tonsil tissue of patients with recurrent or chronic tonsillitis. The data strongly indicate that, unlike acute tonsillopharyngitis, Chlamydia and Mycoplasma are not involved in recurrent or chronic tonsillitis.

Liposarcoma arising in the cheek: report of a case and review of the literature.

The following points can be made about liposarcoma of the oral cavity: 1) it is rare and slow growing; 2) it is often mistaken for a benign lesion; 3) there is a direct correlation of microscopic appearance with biological behavior and prognosis; 4) treatment is primarily surgical, with radiation used for selected cases; and 5) the better-differentiated tumors seem to respond more favorably to radiation.
