Objective: Epidemiological studies suggest that the incidence of anorexia nervosa (AN) is increasing in younger populations, with some evidence that clinical differences occur according to age of onset (AOO), which may impact prognostic outcomes. The current study sought to compare eating disorder (ED) symptomatology, psychological distress and psychosocial function between early onset (EO), typical onset (TO) and later onset (LO) AN in a large sample of treatment-seeking patients with a diagnosis of AN.

Methods: Participants included 249 individuals with a diagnosis of AN who were assessed at an outpatient ED service.

Unlabelled: The objective of this study was to evaluate the utility of (18)F-FDG PET in restaging and response assessment of patients who underwent definitive treatment for Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC).

Methods: A retrospective review of patients undergoing (18)F-FDG PET imaging for MCC between January 1997 and October 2010 at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre with follow-up until February 2015 was performed. Data analysis was performed on patients who were treated definitively and underwent post-treatment PET imaging performed either as a restaging scan for ongoing monitoring, suspicion of recurrence, or assessment for suitability of salvage treatment or as response assessment within 1-6 mo of treatment.

Congenital intraoral tumors derived from embryological germ layers are very rare. These lesions include teratomas, dermoids, epignathi, and teratoid tumors. These embryological neoplasms may interfere with normal development and elevation of the palatal shelves, resulting in a cleft palate.

The straight line repair for unilateral cleft lips developed following the negative long term objective and subjective findings in a group of patients whose defects were repaired using the Millard technique. No revisional surgery had been undertaken. The straight line procedure achieves the aims of a cleft lip repair.

The aim of unilateral cleft lip repair is to achieve a functional and aesthetically acceptable upper lip scar. Many techniques have been described but do not fulfil the basic aesthetic criteria. This series assessed the long term results from a subjective and objective point of view in a group of 20 patients who only had the initial repair, as described by Millard, without further revisional surgery.

Moving a misplaced nipple-areola complex (NAC) without causing additional scarring has proved to be difficult, especially if it is to be moved medially, laterally or inferiorly. This study investigated the possibility of migrating the NAC without leaving additional scarring by using the technique of serial excision. Two adult female pigs were used.

Objective: This paper reports the experience with a two-stage approach to surgical correction of the complete cleft palate, wherein timing of the second stage is dependent on the judgment of the speech pathologist and the orthodontist together with the surgeon.

Patients: Of a total of 35 patients having complete unilateral clefts a sample of 22 were available for postsurgical assessment. The first-stage repair of the palate was carried out at an average age of 10.

As current aesthetic surgical techniques become more standardized and results more predictable, a fine scar may be the demarcating line between acceptable and unacceptable aesthetic results. With this in mind, a scar management program has been adopted based on the modalities of wound support, hydration, and hastened maturity, all factors gleaned from scientific evidence published over the past 25 years. Tension on a scar in one axis will result in a stretched scar, probably initiated by neutrophils and their neutral proteases [18,26].

The proportions of the so-called ideal nasal shape and the operations designed to achieve this have been the subject of innumerable papers. The vast majority of patients in the authors' practices desire a more refined version of the nose and do not want the so-called nosejob look with ideal proportions. A total of 2930 cosmetic rhinoplasties performed over the past 20 years, based on the philosophy of refining the more unrefined features of the nose according to the patients' wishes, have been reviewed, and almost all of these patients were satisfied with the long-term shape of their nose, even though in many cases these noses would be considered less than ideal by some of the newer criteria.

Cosmetic surgery was undertaken on a limited number of physically or mentally challenged patients. Motivation for surgery seemed to mimic those of average cosmetic surgery patients, although the request for surgery was more difficult for some patients in view of their physical or mental challenges. Patient and surgeon satisfaction was extremely high.

Patient satisfaction after surgery to correct the prominent ear relates to the degree of retroposition of the ear. Angular breaks in the cartilage seen with other cartilage-transecting procedures (and even after conchal resections), which are noticed by patients, led to the development of this technique. It is an easy operative technique that may be modified to suit all prominent ears, including the constricted cup ear, and it does not leave any sharp, visible ridges in the region of the anti-helix or concha.

With many drugs of abuse, humans and other species display a preference for higher doses (or more potent dosage forms) over lower doses (or less potent dosage forms). The present study was designed to determine whether this generalization would hold for marijuana smoking by humans. Twelve regular marijuana smokers participated in two independent and identical choice trials in which, on separate sessions, they first sampled marijuana of two different potencies (0.

The duration of behavioral impairment after marijuana smoking remains a matter of some debate. Alcohol and marijuana are frequently used together, but there has been little study of the effects of this drug combination on mood and behavior the day after use. The present study was designed to address these issues.

This study assessed the reinforcing and subjective effects of methylphenidate in a group of 35 adults (15 females and 20 males) with no history of drug dependence. A discrete-trial choice procedure was used to assess the reinforcing effects of a single oral dose of methylphenidate selected to produce a moderate subjective response in each subject (range 20-40mg). A number of variables (gender, current and past drug use, personality, and baseline mood and arousal) were examined in an attempt to identify sources of variability in drug response.

There has been little study of the abuse liability of ephedrine, a naturally occurring drug used in medicine for thousands of years and currently sold as a "legal" stimulant. The present study measured the reinforcing and subjective effects of ephedrine in a group of 27 adults (18 females and 9 males) with no history of drug dependence. A discrete-trial choice procedure was used to assess the reinforcing effects of a single oral dose of ephedrine selected to produce a moderate subjective response in each subject (range: 37.
