Psoriasis is an immune-mediated skin disease known to be associated with a higher risk of cardiometabolic comorbidities such as hypertension, myocardial infarction, and stroke. GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are medications approved to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity and have been reported to improve psoriasis. As more psoriasis patients start GLP-1RAs for approved indications, it is of interest to understand the impact of GLP-1RAs on both psoriasis and associated cardiovascular risk.

Chronic pruritis, characterized by persistent itchiness lasting more than six weeks, affects up to 15% of the population, significantly impairing quality of life. Despite its prevalence and impact, there is an absence of FDA-approved medications specifically for the treatment of chronic pruritus, highlighting a significant unmet need in dermatology. Advancements in dermatologic medications, however, including the development of biologics and Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors, signal potential breakthroughs in pruritus management through a radically different mechanism of action that focuses on their effect on the nervous system.

Article Synopsis
  • Shock wave overpressure can cause traumatic brain injury in soldiers, and traditional helmets offer limited protection against these blasts due to high pressures underneath them.
  • This study explores the use of viscoelastic liners in combat helmets to reduce pressures on the head by testing them against explosive blasts.
  • Results indicate that helmets with viscoelastic liners significantly lower peak overpressures experienced by the wearer and can extend the duration of shock waves, suggesting potential for improved helmet designs to protect against blast-induced brain injuries.

The α-functionalisation of -containing compounds is an area of broad interest in synthetic chemistry due to their presence in biologically active substances among others. Visible light-induced generation of nucleophilic α-aminoalkyl radicals as reactive intermediates that can be trapped by electron-deficient alkenes presents an attractive and mild approach to achieve said functionalisation. In this work, [Fe(iii)(phtmeimb)]PF (phtmeimb = phenyl(tris(3-methylimidazol-2-ylidene))borate), an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complex based on Earth-abundant iron, was used as photoredox catalyst to efficiently drive the formation of α-aminoalkyl radicals from a range of different α-trimethylsilylamines and their subsequent addition to a number of electron-deficient alkenes under green light irradiation.
