Procurement of a high number of progenitor cells is of primary interest in allogeneic PBSC transplantation. We have retrospectively compared toxicity, mobilization effect and progenitor cell yields of two different rhG-CSF schedules in 11 consecutive healthy individuals donating their PBSC. Five of them received rhG-CSF 16 micrograms/kg/d for 4 subsequent d in 2 divided subcutaneous injections (group A); similarly, 6 donors received rhG-CSF 10 micrograms/kg/d for 5 d (group B).

On the other hand, internal mammary artery grafts are usually spared from atherosclerosis. Evidence exists that platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) are involved in the genesis of myointimal hyperplasia and atherosclerosis.

After a synthetic review of the literature, the authors conclude that this operation should no more be considered an experimental procedure, even if a definite statement of its long-term usefulness (and therefore of the indication) is still lacking.

Purpose of the present study was to evaluate the long-term results of vein decompression in the popliteal vein entrapment syndrome. Between August 1986 and June 1994, 35 patients (49 limbs) were operated on for popliteal vein entrapment syndrome at our Institution.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTreatment options for acute leukemia relapsing after allogeneic BMT include conventional chemotherapy or a second transplant; however, results are rather discouraging, the first option being associated with poor survival and the second with a high mortality rate. More recently, donor leukocyte infusion (DLI) from the original donor has been used for relapsed patients in an attempt to induce a graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) effect. This procedure is partially devoid of the toxicity inherent to a second BMT.

Material And Methods: We undertook a prospective population-based study in the province of Belluno, an area located in the North-East of Italy where 211,389 people live, utilizing all the possible case-collection sources available in the territory.
Results: In the first year of the study (June 1, 1992 to May 31, 1993) 271 patients with a diagnosis of transient ischemic attack were recruited.
To assess feasibility and potential advantages of PBSC allograft, we transplanted nine patients (age 20-47 years) with advanced or poor-risk hematologic malignancies. These included eight HLA-identical sibling transplants and one partially matched. Cells were collected from donors by apheresis after rh-G-CSF 10-16 micrograms/kg/day for 4-5 days, and stored at 4 degrees C until infusion.

Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and basic fibroblastic growth factor (bFGF) are two powerful mitogens for smooth muscle cells that have been implicated in the genesis of MH. The aim of this study was to analyze the correlation between progression and regression of MH and production of PDGF and bFGF in experimental vein grafts.

Venous allograft may be used as an alternative to synthetic prostheses. The aim of the study was to explore the immunosuppressive efficacy of Cyclosporine A (CyA) as a means of preventing venous allograft failures and rejection.

Evidence exists that growth factors are involved in the genesis of myointimal hyperplasia. The aim of this study was to assess the release of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and basic fibroblastic growth factor (bFGF) by PTFE arterial grafts.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the influence of the degree of porosity on the release of growth factors (PDGF AA, PDGF BB, bFGF) by healing PTFE grafts.
Design And Setting: Laboratory animal study.
Materials: 1 cm long segments of non-reinforced PTFE grafts (30 microns fibril length, 2 mm internal diameter, 0.
Background: The effects of cyclosporin A on accelerated atherosclerosis were studied in an experimental model of aortic isotransplantation.
Methods: Seventy-six Lewis rats were studied. Forty-one abdominal aortic isografts were performed and divided into five groups: 2-day isografts and 15- and 100-day isografts with and without cyclosporin treatment.
A case of fibrous benign mesothelioma is reported, together with some considerations on the diagnosis and the treatment of this rare tumour. Preoperative diagnosis is often impossible and so surgery is of great value both for treatment and diagnosis.

Objectives: Basic Fibroblastic Growth Factor (bFGF) is a powerful mitogen for smooth muscle cells and has been implicated in the genesis of Myointimal hyperplasia. The aim of this study was to determine the release of bFGF by veins in different haemodynamic conditions.
Design And Setting: Laboratory animal study.
Background: Recurrence or persistence of neurologic symptoms after surgical treatment of patients with thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) are reported to be as high as 25%. To identify factors affecting the long-term outcome of surgical treatment of patients with TOS, we reviewed our 20-year experience.
Methods: One hundred thirty-four transaxillary first rib resections were performed on 118 patients (43 men, 75 women, mean age 38 +/- 13 years).
Atherosclerotic aneurysms involving only infrapopliteal arteries are extremely rare. The present report describes a patient with two completely separate aneurysmal dilatations involving the tibioperoneal trunk and the anterior tibial artery. To our knowledge, this condition has not been previously described.

This study aimed to provide an epidemiological survey of cerebrovascular disease that could supply investigative objectives and support information for regional healthcare facilities planning.
Methods: We undertook a prospective population-based study in the territory of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th local health units in the province of Belluno, an area located in northeast Italy (population, 211 389).
This study was carried out to investigate if the University of Wisconsin solution (UWs) is suitable for long-term preservation of autogenous vein grafts (AVG) prior to transplantation, compared to autologous whole blood (AWB) and normal saline (NS). Autogenous jugular and femoral veins were harvested from adult mongrel dogs, using a "no-touch" technique. One segment of vein was immediately implanted to serve as a control, while other segments were stored for 24 hr at 4 degrees C in AWB, NS, or UWs.

The point is whether to treat or not the associated tubular hypoplasia performing an extended Resection and "End to End" Anastomosis (ERETE) or a subclavian flap angioplasty (Waldhausen). According to some report in the literature we called an arch hypoplastic if its diameter in the first or second portion was less than the patient body weight plus 1.
