Background: Tublosis (TB) and the approaches to successful management are commonly misunderstood health topics among patients and family members within resource-limited settings. Such public misconceptions often result in delayed diagnoses of afflicted patients, suboptimal compliance with prescribed therapies and a negative community social stigma that hinders effective contact investigations.

Objective: To determine through an observational field pilot study if videography-based TB education program can be implemented in busy resource-limited outpatient TB clinic settings and improve both patient and family understanding of TB and its treatment, as well as, improve the efficiency of TB medical evaluations and corresponding contact investigations.

Genotypic and phenotypic characterization of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) clones with high-level mupirocin resistance.

A high proportion of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolates recovered in one year period showed high-level mupirocin-resistance (HLMUPR-MRSA) in our environment (27.2%). HLMUPR-MRSA isolates were mainly collected from skin and soft tissue samples, and diabetes was the main related comorbidity condition.

Introduction: In order to study the evolution of the outbreak that occurred between 2009 and 2010 in 3 hospitals in Zaragoza, all vancomycin-resistant clinical Enterococcus faecalis isolates identified between 2011 and 2013 at these hospitals were characterised.

Background: To evaluate the immunological situation against hepatitis B virus (HBV) of a cohort of dentistry students, to analyze the behavior of the levels of hepatitis B surface antigen (anti-HBs) after the administration of one or three vaccine doses, and to determine the influence of age and sex on the immune response.

Material And Methods: This retrospective cohort study included students attending the School of Dentistry of the institution where the study was performed from 2005 to 2012 who had completed the public health vaccination calendar for HBV at the age of 12-13. Data on age, sex, basal anti-HBs levels, post-vaccination anti-HBs results and final anti-HBs levels were collected.

Background: PRPS1 encodes isoform I of phosphoribosylpyrophosphate synthetase (PRS-I), a key enzyme in nucleotide biosynthesis. Different missense mutations in PRPS1 cause a variety of disorders that include PRS-I superactivity, nonsyndromic sensorineural hearing impairment, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, and Arts syndrome. It has been proposed that each mutation would result in a specific phenotype, depending on its effects on the structure and function of the enzyme.

Structure of p15(PAF)-PCNA complex and implications for clamp sliding during DNA replication and repair.

The intrinsically disordered protein p15(PAF) regulates DNA replication and repair by binding to the proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) sliding clamp. We present the structure of the human p15(PAF)-PCNA complex. Crystallography and NMR show the central PCNA-interacting protein motif (PIP-box) of p15(PAF) tightly bound to the front-face of PCNA.

Antimicrobial resistance, virulence factors and genetic lineages of hospital-onset methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolates detected in a hospital in Zaragoza.

Introduction: MRSA population dynamics is undergoing significant changes, and for this reason it is important to know which clones are circulating in our nosocomial environment.

Impact of the implementation of an interdisciplinary infection control program to prevent surgical wound infection in pediatric heart surgery.

Unlabelled: Surgical site infection (SSI) remains a major source of morbidity, mortality, and increased health care costs in children undergoing heart surgery. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of an intervention program designed to reduce the high incidence of SSI observed at our center in pediatric patients. An interdisciplinary infection control program including pre-, intra-, and postoperative measures was introduced for children undergoing heart surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass.

WW domains of the yes-kinase-associated-protein (YAP) transcriptional regulator behave as independent units with different binding preferences for PPxY motif-containing ligands.

YAP is a WW domain-containing effector of the Hippo tumor suppressor pathway, and the object of heightened interest as a potent oncogene and stemness factor. YAP has two major isoforms that differ in the number of WW domains they harbor. Elucidating the degree of co-operation between these WW domains is important for a full understanding of the molecular function of YAP.

Detection of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae in various scenarios and health settings.

Detection of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) is an important task at microbiology laboratories in hospitals. As the prevalence of CPE is increasing worldwide, the implementation of phenotypically based screening as well as confirmatory procedures to detect CPE are important for microbiologists. In addition to detection of carbapenem hydrolysis, the inhibition of activity against a carbapenem in the presence of several inhibitor compounds specific to class A, B, or class C beta-lactamases is a useful method to confirm the presence of carbapenemases in bacterial isolates.

Contribution of mutation load to the intrafamilial genetic heterogeneity in a large cohort of Spanish retinal dystrophies families.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to deepen our knowledge on the basis of intrafamilial genetic heterogeneity of inherited retinal dystrophies (RD) to further discern the contribution of individual alleles to the pathology.

Methods: Families with intrafamilial locus and/or allelic heterogeneity were selected from a cohort of 873 characterized of 2468 unrelated RD families. Clinical examination included visual field assessments, electrophysiology, fundus examination, and audiogram.

Background: Adolescence is a critical period for the development of depressive symptoms and obesity. This study examined the association of depressive symptoms with standardized BMI (BMI z-score), lifestyle behaviors, and self-efficacy measures in a sample of urban adolescents.

Methods: A school-based study was conducted among adolescents (N=1508) enrolled from 11 public schools.

Usefulness of PCR-RFLP coa gene for clonal classification of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolates in tertiary hospitals.

One hundred and one methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) clinical isolates were classified into 10 genotypes based on their polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) coa pattern. PCR-RFLP coa patterns correlated with the clonal complex (CC) with the exception of CC5, which was related to 2 patterns (B and E). The PCR-RFLP coa gene technique provides a useful preliminary method to monitor variations in MRSA populations.

Cochlear implantation outcomes in advanced otosclerosis.

Introduction: Several studies support the use of cochlear implants (CI) in far-advanced otosclerosis (FAO).

Material And Methods: We compared our results of CI in patients with FAO and unknown origin hearing loss (UOHL) and our incidence of facial electrical stimulation and difficult insertion of the electrode bundle up to 3 to 5 years from surgery.

Results: We found 17 patients with CI in FAO and UOHL.

A Model Analysis for the Design and Deployment of an Eulerian Sediment Trap Mooring Array in a Western Boundary Upwelling System from Southeast Brazil.

This work addresses the design and configuration of a Eulerian sediment trap mooring array, which was deployed at the shelf edge (zm ≈ 140 m) 80 km off Cabo Frio, SE- Brazil (23° S). The site was subject to interplay between the Tropical Waters (TW) of the Brazil Current (BC), intrusions from the South Atlantic Central Waters (SACW), which are the source of upwelling in the region, and other oceanographic processes. Detailed computations were used to optimize the total weight, buoyancy balance, and maximum acceptable tilt to avoid hydrodynamic bias in the trapping efficiency and array adaptation to the local oceanographic conditions with the assistance of Matlab and Muringa programs and Modular Ocean Model 4.
