Government and community strategies in Pernambuco, Brazil, to face COVID-19.

This case study analyzed arrangements and strategies of the network actors in the Special Indigenous Sanitary District (DSEI) Pernambuco's territory to guarantee the right to health of Indigenous populations during the COVID-19 pandemic. This work was carried out through document analysis, workshops, and field research. The Contingency Plan for COVID-19 in Indigenous Peoples of DSEI Pernambuco included surveillance actions, laboratory and pharmaceutical assistance, communication, and management.

Health surveillance among indigenous populations in the context of COVID-19: a scoping review.

The study aimed to identify protection strategies used by Indigenous peoples during the COVID-19 pandemic. Analyzing 56 articles from 2020 to May 2021 across four areas -community organization, governance, communication, and territorial approaches - it found that structural vulnerabilities shaped their responses. The spread of the virus was influenced by environmental, social, and cultural factors.

Short-term intraocular pressure changes after intravitreal aflibercept 2 mg, aflibercept 8 mg and faricimab: a prospective, comparative study.

Background/aims: Intravitreal injection (IVT) of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents is the standard of care for several retinal diseases but can cause intraocular pressure (IOP) elevations. This study investigates short-term postinjection IOP changes following aflibercept 8 mg and faricimab, compared with aflibercept 2 mg.

Methods: This observational, prospective study included 90 patients with age-related macular degeneration or diabetic macular oedema, divided into three groups, receiving aflibercept 2 mg, aflibercept 8 mg or faricimab.

Prognostic impact of circulating tumor DNA detection in portal and peripheral blood in resected pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma patients.

In PDAC patients, ctDNA detection's prognostic significance needs validation especially in resected patients. This study investigated ctDNA kinetics in portal and peripheral blood before and after resection, and whether tissue mobilization during surgery influences ctDNA detection. In this single-center prospective cohort, portal and peripheral blood were drawn during pancreaticoduodenectomy before and after tissue mobilization, during 12 postoperative months and were associated with overall survival (OS), recurrence-free survival (RFS) and CA19-9 (secondary endpoints).

The profound influence of climate change on the hydrological cycle raises concerns about its potential impacts on water quality, particularly in agricultural catchments. Here, we analysed 200 storm events monitored for nitrate and total phosphorus (TP) at sub-hourly intervals from 2016 to 2023 in the Kervidy-Naizin catchment (north-western France). Using Extreme Value theory, we identified storm events with extreme concentrations and compared their hydroclimatic characteristics to those of non-extreme events.

Oxidative stress and renal status of farmers exposed to pesticides in Seville (Spain).

The aim was to determine whether indirect exposure to pesticides, specifically a copper-based fungicide, induces alterations in oxidative stress and subclinical and early kidney biomarkers in male farmers tasked with olives harvesting. Furthermore, we tested whether sex influences the susceptibility to pesticide-induced renal damage by comparing the results of this study with those obtained previously. The study focused on olive farmers (n = 41) indirectly exposed to copper-based fungicides in Estepa (Sevilla, Spain), comparing them with a control group (n = 32).

A wide scope, pan-comparative, systematic meta-analysis of the efficacy of prophylactic strategies for cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is the most common complication of cardiac surgery. Cardiac surgery-associated AKI (CSA-AKI) is caused by systemic and renal hemodynamic impairment and parenchymal injury. Prophylaxis of CSA-AKI remains an unmet priority, for which preventive strategies based on drug therapies, hydration procedures, and remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) have been tested in pre-clinical and clinical studies, with variable success.

Cultural competence of undergraduate student nurses: a multicenter study.

Method: a total of 168 nursing students from four different countries were included in our study. The study methodology involved a cross-sectional assessment of cultural competence among undergraduate nursing students from four European universities.

Drug-tolerance has emerged as one of the major non-genetic adaptive processes driving resistance to targeted therapy (TT) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the kinetics and sequence of molecular events governing this adaptive response remain poorly understood. Here, we combine real-time monitoring of the cell-cycle dynamics and single-cell RNA sequencing in a broad panel of oncogenic addiction such as EGFR-, ALK-, BRAF- and KRAS-mutant NSCLC, treated with their corresponding TT.

Objective: To describe the association between day-to-day peak pain severity and clinical factors in individuals with chronic migraine (CM).

Background: Little is known about how clinical factors relate to day-to-day pain severity in individuals with CM.

Methods: Adults with CM were enrolled into this observational prospective cohort study that collected daily data about headache, associated symptoms, and lifestyle factors using a digital health platform (N1-Headache™) for 90 days.

The influence of psilocybin on subconscious and conscious emotional learning.

Serotonergic psychedelics hold promise as a treatment modality for various psychiatric disorders and are currently applied in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. We investigated the learning effects of the serotonin receptor agonist psilocybin in a probabilistic cue-reward task with emotional cues in the form of neutral or fearful faces, presented either consciously or subconsciously. This study represents the first investigation into reinforcement learning with psilocybin.

To understand microbial metabolism in horticultural soils exposed to pesticides, genome sequencing of sp. strain UAMC was performed. A total of 7,892 genes distributed across 40 contigs were identified.

Introduction: Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare disease that affects women almost exclusively. We aimed to determine the psychological profile in patients with LAM, and their potential association with sociodemographic and clinical features, and to know their role in coping with the disease.

The biggest allure of heterogeneous electro-Fenton (HEF) processes largely fails on its high efficiency for the degradation of a plethora of hazardous compounds present in water, but still challenging to search for good and cost-effective electrocatalyst. In this work, carbon black (CB) and oxidised carbon black (CBox) materials were investigated as cathodes in the electrochemical production of hydrogen peroxide involved in HEF reaction for the degradation of 2-phenylphenol (2PP) as a target pollutant. The electrodes were fabricated by employing carbon cloth as support, and the highest HO production yields were obtained for the CBox, pointing out the beneficial effect of the hydrophilic character of the electrode and oxygen-type functionalization of the carbonaceous surface.

Continuous Ketone Monitoring via Wearable Microneedle Patch Platform.

Ketone bodies (KBs), especially β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), have gained tremendous attention as potential biomarkers as their presence in bodily fluids is closely associated with health and wellness. While a variety of blood fingerstick test strips are available for self-testing of BHB, there are major needs for wearable devices capable of continuously tracking changing BHB concentrations. To address these needs, we present here the first demonstration of a wearable microneedle-based continuous ketone monitoring (CKM) in human interstitial fluid (ISF) and illustrate its ability to closely follow the intake of ketone drinks.

Cytoskeleton remodeling induced by SMYD2 methyltransferase drives breast cancer metastasis.

Malignant forms of breast cancer refractory to existing therapies remain a major unmet health issue, primarily due to metastatic spread.
