The dissemination of antimicrobial resistance genes and the bacterium that harbor them have increasingly become a public concern, especially in low- and middle-income countries. The present study used whole-genome sequencing to analyze 10 KPC-2-producing isolates obtained from clinical specimens originated from Brazilian hospitals. The study documents a relevant "snapshot" of the presence of class 1 integrons in 90% of the strains presenting different gene cassettes ( and ), associated or not with transposons.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of sequential feeding technique in two genetic lines (GL; Line A [cross having a greater proportion of Pietrain] and Line B [cross having a lower proportion of Pietrain]) of growing-finishing pigs reared under daily cyclic high ambient temperature conditions. Seventy-eight castrated male pigs (22 ± 2.5 kg BW) were housed in a single group and were allocated to one of the three feeding programs: control (CON, 24 h control diet), high-fat/low-crude protein (HF/LP, 24 h high-fat/low-crude protein diet), and sequential feeding (SEQ, control diet from 1800 to 1000 h and HF/LP diet from 1001 to 1759 h).

The article analyzes the process of reconstructing the nursing profession in Brazil post-1930. We examine teaching practices in higher education and the reinsertion of black women in professional nursing through the biography of Lydia das Dôres Matta, a nurse trained in the second class graduated from the São Paulo School of Nursing as a scholarship student in the Special Public Health Service Nursing Program. The results allow reflections on the professional identity of Brazilian nursing from the trajectory of a black woman, as well as on the historiography of nursing in Brazil.

NLRP3 inflammasome is a protein complex crucial to caspase-1 activation and IL-1β and IL-18 maturation. This receptor participates in innate immune responses to different pathogens, including the bacteria of genus Brucella. Our group recently demonstrated that Brucella abortus-induced IL-1β secretion involves NLRP3 inflammasome and it is partially dependent on mitochondrial ROS production.

Case Report: A 10-year-old female presented dermostosis on the face, affecting cheeks and nose, characterized by erythema, papules, pustules, scars of two years of evolution, as well as bilateral conjunctivitis, blepharitis and corneal opacity. She referred recurrent exacerbations and partial remission of cutaneous lesions and ocular symptoms related to sun exposure.

Effect of pyrolysis conditions on the total contents of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in biochars produced from organic residues: Assessment of their hazard potential.

The interest of using biochar, the solid byproduct from organic waste pyrolysis, as soil conditioner is significantly increasing. Nevertheless, persistent organic pollutants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), are formed during pyrolysis due to the incomplete combustion of organic matter. Consequently, these pollutants may enter the environment when biochar is incorporated into soil and cause adverse ecological effects.

Several snake species possess, in their circulating blood, endogenous PLA inhibitors (sbPLIs) with the primary function of natural protection against toxic enzymes from homologous and heterologous venoms. Among the three structural classes of sbPLIs - named α, β, and γ - the β class (sbβPLIs) is the least known with only four identified sequences, so far. The last class of inhibitors encompass molecules with leucine rich repeats (LRRs) motifs containing repeating amino acid segments.

[Use of antidepressants during breastfeeding: evaluating drug package inserts conformity with science-based bibliographical sources].

This article sought to evaluate the conformity between recommendations regarding antidepressant use during breastfeeding found in drug package inserts with recommendations from science-based bibliographic sources. We evaluated the standard drug package inserts of 23 antidepressants with active registration in Brazil. The presence of contraindications of antidepressant use during breastfeeding was compared with information present in the Brazilian Ministry of Health technical manual, the book Medications and Mothers' Milk and on the databases LactMed, Micromedex and UpToDate.

Parallel adaptation of rabbit populations to myxoma virus.

In the 1950s the myxoma virus was released into European rabbit populations in Australia and Europe, decimating populations and resulting in the rapid evolution of resistance. We investigated the genetic basis of resistance by comparing the exomes of rabbits collected before and after the pandemic. We found a strong pattern of parallel evolution, with selection on standing genetic variation favoring the same alleles in Australia, France, and the United Kingdom.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC) that is widely used in the manufacturing of plastics and inner linings of food cans. Previously, it was reported that BPA disturbed the sexual dimorphic nucleus of the hypothalamus and delaying the onset of puberty attributed to an estrogenic action. In addition, BPA during the perinatal period increased LH serum concentrations in male offspring of dams at doses below the reproductive NOAEL (No Observable Adverse Effect Level) based upon World Health Organization guidelines.

This in vitro study aimed to compare the performance of a light-emitting diode (LED) device (Midwest Caries I.D.: MID), International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) visual criteria, and fluorescence-based devices (DIAGNOdent: LF; DIAGNOdent pen: LFpen; and Quantitative Light-induced Fluorescence: QLF) in detecting occlusal caries in the primary molars.

Introduction: The cochlear implant is an effective device for children with severe and/or profound prelingual hearing loss, since it provides considerable improvement in oral language acquisition through the auditory pathway. The use of a cochlear implant contributes to the development of auditory perception, favoring the acquisition of the linguistic processes related to communication skills, which might have a positive effect on other areas of development.
