The electromagnet provides a favorable environment for certain applications of NMR microscopy. These include plant imaging experiments and measurements of slow molecular diffusion, where high magnetic field gradients for the pulsed gradient spin echo (PGSE) technique are required. In this paper, two probes designed specifically for these two applications are described.

Images of rabbit tracheal cross sections were obtained at a series of transmural pressures ranging from 22 to -95 cmH2O by use of a nuclear magnetic resonance imaging microscope. The excised, washed tracheas were immersed in a solution of phosphate-buffered saline made up in deuterium oxide (D2O, pH 7.3).

A pulsed field gradient spin echo sequence has been incorporated in a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging experiment to provide an image contrast dependent on local molecular self-diffusion. The consequent image attenuation is shown to exhibit a dependence on applied magnetic field gradient consistent with the Stejskal-Tanner relationship. The method used represents a novel extension of microscopic imaging and demonstrates the possibility of measuring localized motion.

Pulsed field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance has been used to measure water self-diffusion coefficients in the endosperm tissue of wheat grains as a function of the tissue water content. A model that confines the water molecules to a randomly oriented array of capillaries with both transverse dimension less than 100 nm has been used to fit the data and give a unique diffusion coefficient at each water content. The diffusion rates vary from 1.

A young woman presented with a 2 year history of a severe bleeding disorder and marked deficiencies in all four vitamin-K-dependent factors. Metabolic studies with tracer doses of tritium-labelled vitamin K1 suggested that the patient might be taking an oral anticoagulant; and subsequently her plasma was found to contain a substance identical to phenindione in its spectrophotometric and chromatographic properties. The half-disappearance times of factors II, IX, X were measured after the administration of a concentrate of these factors and were found to conform with published figures.

In a series of 35 cases, I used a relatively uncommon but simple operation to correct urinary stress incontinence by the abdominal route. The operation is known as vesicourethrolysis and consists of dissection of the tissues in the space of Retzius. This establishes an anatomical urethrovesical angle without suturing and relieves urinary stress incontinence.

Surveys were carried out on random samples of the farming population in Devon and Wales in order to estimate the prevalence of respiratory symptoms and of positive precipitin reactions to thermophilic fungi. Bronchitis, as defined, was common among the Welsh hill farmers, and the proportion of positive serological tests was higher in both the areas surveyed in Wales as compared with Devon. All three surveys confirmed a previous finding that the proportion of positive precipitin tests was higher among non-smokers than smokers.
